113 decibels: Police stop excessively loud Harley rider – Mettmann

On Sunday (August 30, 2020), the Mettmann district police authority checked motorcyclists during targeted traffic checks in Mettmann and Velbert.

During traffic checks between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., the traffic service was once again in action with the Mettmann district police department's „ProVida“ motorcycle. The ProVida motorcycle, which has been in use for many years, is a civilian motorcycle from the Mettmann district police authority that has been specially converted for traffic monitoring. It is capable of detecting speeding violations while in motion and recording them on video as evidence.

The ProVida motorcyclist recorded a total of 15 violations, some of them serious, on video, particularly at the well-known motorcycle hotspots on the Mettmann Südring and in the Neandertal valley in Velbert.

These included six speeding offenses—three of which were so severe that the drivers will all face a one-month driving ban.

In addition, the police had to issue three citations for illegal passing—including one against the driver of a Harley Davidson. The 58-year-old man from Düsseldorf had illegally passed several vehicles on the Südring in the direction of Ratingen, thereby posing a concrete danger to oncoming traffic. The consequences for the Harley rider: he had to pay a fine of 120 euros and will also receive a point in Flensburg.

A 58-year-old Harley Davidson rider was also stopped by the motorcycle officer on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße in Velbert—not because he was speeding, but because his motorcycle was significantly too loud: The man had modified the silencer on his bike to such an extent that the noise measurement carried out on site showed a value of 113 decibels – the permitted noise limit is 77 decibels.

The consequence: the Harley's operating license has expired, and the man is not allowed to ride his motorcycle again until he has had it inspected by an expert after repairs have been made. In addition, a corresponding report has been filed.
