ADAC Camping Guide Germany and Northern Europe 2022

Camping is becoming increasingly luxurious: ADAC Camping awards 158 campsites in Europe with 5 stars

  • 28 new ADAC Super Places in Europe, 211% growth in the top group
  • Italy remains number 1 in the top group, Croatia records strongest growth
  • The island of Fehmarn puts Schleswig-Holstein at the top in Germany

The ADAC has published a new camping guide for 2022 and kindly sent us this information. I found the information quite useful, as I often stay at campsites myself on my Harley-Davidson tours. It's definitely a good guide for planning tours.

The advantages of a campsite are obvious: you'll find sanitary facilities, a kiosk, and, with a bit of luck, often a great location. You're simply closer to nature, and this way of traveling is much cheaper than staying in hotels the whole time.

In Scandinavia, there are also cabins available, which are particularly recommended in bad weather. Unfortunately, wild camping is prohibited in most European countries, which makes the camping guide interesting again for tour planning. It's no secret that some people travel the world with their kids and all their belongings. They drive to beautiful places with their camper and Harley on a trailer and, once there, explore the area at a leisurely pace on their Harley.

To each his own, that's the freedom we all talk about!

Berlin, December 7, 2021 – This year, the ADAC once again sent its inspectors to campsites across Europe to check their quality. The most important finding: with 28 new ADAC Super Places (+21%), the top tier of European luxury camping has grown significantly.

This brings the total number of 5-star campsites in Europe to 158. Uwe Frers, Managing Director of ADAC Camping: “28 new ADAC Superplaces show where camping is heading: higher quality for increasingly discerning campers.” There has also been strong growth in the 4 and 4.5-star categories. 103 campsites have made the leap into this segment (1373 campsites) and are delighted to have been awarded ADAC Tipp status.

Germany: Fehmarn puts Schleswig-Holstein at the top in Germany

The northernmost state is in the lead: Schleswig-Holstein takes the top spot with six ADAC Super Places. It is followed by Baden-Württemberg (4), Bavaria (3), and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lower Saxony (2 each).

The federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Brandenburg, and Saxony each have one ADAC Superplatz. The island of Fehmarn in Schleswig-Holstein is proving to be a qualitative highlight for camping fans with four ADAC Superplätze: Camping- und Ferienpark Wulfener Hals, Camping Strukkamphuk, Inselcamp Fehmarn, and Camping Miramar.

ADAC classification: How it is assessed

The ADAC classification shows the standard of a campsite. The highest classification level is 5 stars. The classification is calculated from the individual results of an inspection in the areas of sanitary facilities, site grounds, utilities, leisure facilities, and swimming facilities.

To this end, ADAC inspectors travel throughout Europe to gain an impression of each campsite on site. To ensure that the evaluation is fair and transparent, it follows fixed criteria that are applied uniformly throughout Europe.

Around 250 data points are collected during an inspection. If a campsite manages to achieve an above-average rating and is classified with 5 stars, it receives the ADAC Superplatz rating.
