Over the mountain range from Los Angeles to Barstow
The next morning in Barstow on Route 66, the sun is shining and it's really nice and warm. We're staying in a classic American hotel.
The Quality Inn It is a 2-star hotel, but we would give it an extra star. Everything is clean, the beds are very comfortable, and there is a flat-screen TV, refrigerator, and air conditioning. There is even a simple but well-maintained pool in the courtyard of the complex. The hotel is not your typical vacation hotel; it tends to attract Americans passing through.
The staff are very nice. We arrived late in the evening and were given a very friendly welcome at the reception, which is staffed around the clock.
Cool staff and a great breakfast!
Breakfast was served by a very friendly waitress in RockaBilly style, which is surely her personal style too, but it suited the hotel perfectly.
The breakfast was really great, with yogurt and fresh fruit, even strawberries and melon, a delicious omelet, and unlimited coffee—all included in the price at this hotel.

Well fortified, we were ready to start the new day. After checking out, we first drove to the gas station opposite the hotel to fill up. It's always a good idea to have enough to drink with you—you never know!
Today's itinerary included the Mother Road Museum and the Santa Fe The train station and museum are both located on the outskirts of Barstow. Unfortunately, the museum is only open on weekends, but the area where the museum is located is still worth a visit. There is a really beautiful, nostalgic bridge that you drive over, which has something special about it.

More InformationThe old train station with its old stories, where old locomotives and carriages from the Santa Fe Railway company, a large track system shows that this must have been a really important transshipment point; it's definitely worth a visit to take a photo.
We drove a little further into the desert past the old train station, but unfortunately one of our bikes didn't like it very much. Hermann's bike was getting hotter and hotter. The problem couldn't be solved easily, so we quickly called the service department at EagleRider called.
We agreed to meet at Denny's Burger, where we want to exchange the bikes, but that will take a few hours. The EagleRider service left immediately, but the distances are long and it's really difficult to get around by car, especially in the cities.
After we had thoroughly tested Denny's Burger, the service replaced the machine, and everything went really smoothly. Denny's Burger is open 24 hours a day. If you want to eat a good steak, you'll find very good food here at reasonable prices. We really liked it, and the staff were also very friendly. They even brought us some things we had left behind.
However, it gets dark at 7 p.m. in March, which meant we had to make our way to Death Valley in the dark. The LED headlights on the Harley-Davidson E-Glide had to work hard, but they lit up the roads really well.
We noticed how important the two additional headlights are, especially when cornering, as they illuminate the area close to the side of the vehicle when turning.
Coyotes cross the highway in front of us at night.
In the evenings, temperatures can drop quickly, with 15 degrees not uncommon in some cases, which is explained by the differences in altitude. At night, we even saw coyotes running along the desert route; otherwise, you don't see many animals on the tour.
We arrived at Stovepipe Wells late in the evening, right in the middle of Death Valley! However, it is pitch dark, so we will only see what it looks like here tomorrow morning. For now, it's GOOD NIGHT.

Hello,
Well-written report. In 2018, we traveled from Flagstaff to Barstow on the old Route 66 and stayed there overnight. In the early evening, we walked about a kilometer from our Motel 6 to a restaurant. On the way, a local resident approached us and warned us that it was very dangerous to walk here (on the main road) because muggings often occur...
Perhaps quite useful to know ;-))
See you later.
Wally
Hi Wally, yes, tips like that are always good, especially on this route, which is usually very busy under normal circumstances. Thanks, best regards, Volker
