The clutch assist for your Harley - clutch facilitators made by Müller - a success story for almost 20 years

The original idea for the Power Clutch dates back to the 1990s. And the discovery of the groundbreaking technology happened rather by chance, but let's tell the story from the beginning. 

Even in the 90s, there were already Clutch facilitations on the market, but these often resulted in an enormous loss of travel, which meant that the neutral gear could no longer be engaged or the clutch no longer disengaged cleanly. The trend was also towards steel-covered Bowden cables and high Ape-Hanger handlebars, which led to further stroke loss ... all things that Werner Müller and thought that something should be done about it. 

During this time, he developed his 5-speed kicker, which also made Müller very well-known in the customizing scene (and is still available from W&W today under its own brand „Eightball“). The kicker is particularly small, which meant that it was no longer possible to use the original clutch segment.

Werner had to use a smaller clutch segment, which he developed himself. In this segment, he was forced to place the balls closer to the center, which had the surprising side effect of making the clutch approximately 20% easier to pull. Based on these findings and the existing market for lighter clutches, the idea of developing one grew. But it was to take a few more years before it was ready. 

In 2002, Werner took up the idea again, designing and drawing, tinkering and testing. Today, he no longer knows exactly how many different prototypes they „carved out“ on the milling machine, but there were very, very many. In addition to moving the balls further into the center, the angle of inclination of the ramps was also adjusted. The idea was to get the maximum out of this part. And so, in the end, he managed to achieve a relief of over 40%. 

A patent application was filed in the USA and utility model protection was registered in Germany. However, unlike the previous parts, production was not to be carried out in the company's own production facility with milling machines, but as an investment casting. A suitable company was soon found in Germany to manufacture the parts.

But to our amazement, the investment casting only reached 30% relief just when we thought we had finally reached our destination. Werner Müller could have simply marketed the part directly, but that would not have done justice to his ambition and so he continued to optimize and haggle until, in the end, the investment casting part also brought the desired relief to the 40%. 

Werner Müller took a full risk, put all his eggs in one basket and ordered 5,000 sets in the first delivery. This meant that he was able to „Miracle particle“ - as the Dream Machines later described in an article - could also be marketed to wholesalers. Chance also played into the hands of the small, Bavarian family business.

When the owner of DRAG Specialties - Fred Fox - was visiting Konz, he was so enthusiastic about this part that Werner quickly went to a meeting with him and then sold the first 1,000 units to America. All other wholesalers quickly recognized the potential of this small part and included it in their catalog. 

Since 2003 the Power Clutch officially on the market. It was awarded the „Custom Part of the Year 2003“ and has now sold over 100,000 units. The small parts forge in rural Bavaria, which is now run by the son Fabian Müller is rightly proud to have landed such a coup. 

Anyone who has ever worked with the Power Clutch I don't think I would want to be without it, as can be seen from many forum reports and customer testimonials. Many women are also happy about the relief or people with disabilities, who have only been able to drive with this part. Harley riding is made possible again in the first place. Or to put it in the words of Müller himself:

„Why make it difficult when it can be so easy?“
