Bucket List - Discover the Lofoten Islands on the Road Glide ST
Part 4
The daily schedule in part four!
- New hotel in the north of Lofoten
- Discover a great coastal road
- Are reindeer furred game?
Today I spent the second night on the Lofoten Islands, yesterday's day with the trip to Haukland Beach and the Viking Museum was a great start. I am now drawn about 220 kilometers further into the northern part of the Lofoten Islands. Yesterday evening I found a small hotel in Sandtorg. At first I couldn't make heads or tails of the hotel offer, but the most important things were right. They were: A good breakfast, private bathroom with toilet and preferably close to the sea. In terms of price, I would prefer to stay in a nicer place, after all I am in the Lofoten Islands and not just passing through.
I have found a hotel from the Best Western Signature Collection
The hotel didn't look particularly modern in the pictures, but it belongs to the Best Western Signature Collection, which means that this hotel is not subject to brand restrictions and is usually privately run. Anyway, I've booked there and am now looking for a really nice route, as I'm not on the island for the hotels. I've got very nice weather again and the plan is to find a route where I can ride my Harley along the sea in a relaxed manner.
I went on this tour very spontaneously because the time window had just opened up, so there was no preparation, which is not particularly bad for me. However, I do know Harley bikers who plan their tours down to the last detail, which can be really fun and is sometimes part of the experience. For me, it's more of an adventure in the spontaneous way, but I'm traveling alone, so it's usually no problem to find somewhere to stay or ride until you find something.
I have probably discovered one of the most beautiful routes by the sea
The Road Glide has the BoomBox GTS navigation, basically it is easy to find a nice route, you just have to enter the destination and Most promising, fastest, Shortest or most winding route Depending on which BoomBox you have, you should find these terms in the route options area.
As already mentioned, it's about 220 kilometers, which according to the navigation should take me three and a half hours. That's fine, so I can spend the day comfortably driving to the north of the Lofoten Islands.
Checking out of my accommodation at the harbor of Ballstad This time it's the totally lovely wife. Her husband is a fisherman, he takes the fishing boat out to sea early in the morning to fish. Not like before, more as a hobby or to take visitors on a fishing trip. If I had known this beforehand, I might have just gone along for the ride. There are many sea eagles to be seen on the Lofoten Islands, they hunt fish spectacularly and if you're really lucky, you might even see whales.
At the lower tip of Lofoten is the bird island of Røst, where puffins make their home in the rocks. You can only get to the island by boat, so if you enjoy taking photos and have a good telephoto lens, this tip could be worthwhile. The Lofoten Islands have a lot to offer, you should bring a little more time with you than I did.
Off we go, turning right in Leknes towards the sea. I'm now on the 815. You should stay on this road, otherwise you can take the lower half on the 817. I take the 815 and after a few bends, the wide open countryside opens up before me and I can see the open sea.
I pause to take in the breathtaking view. The sky is a brilliant blue, while the sun's rays are reflected on the calm sea. The salty sea breeze blows gently around my nose and makes my heart beat faster with excitement.
The road meanders further along the coast as I feel the sense of freedom and adventure rising up inside me. The roar of the waves is accompanied by the sound of the Road Glide ST, especially the snorkeling from the Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather air filter.
As I drive slowly, I can literally feel the endless expanse of the ocean stretching out in front of me. I made a short film of it, I think you can understand my emotions.
Directly along the sea, on the 815

More informationI stop again and again to enjoy the view and take photos of these unforgettable moments. I feel alive and free as I explore the coast of Norway on my Harley, so I have reached the destination of my journey in my mind.
After about 40 kilometers I see the Sundklakkbrua bridge in front of me, now I am back on the main road E10, which starts in the south of Lofoten in Å i Lofoten, at the ferry port and ends in the town of Bjerkvik north of Lofoten and merges into the E6. The E6 has its highest point just before the North Cape in Olderfjord, so you could drive straight through.
But I really don't intend to do that, I was already there in 2017 and now a great hotel in Sandtorg is waiting for me.
Now that I'm back on the road in the interior of the island, the traffic suddenly builds up in front of me. Traffic jams are very unusual in Norway; you only really get them when there's an accident or roadworks ahead.
In my case, however, an agitated reindeer came running towards me on the road, its tongue was already hanging out, the animal was visibly agitated, but will certainly leave the road again on its own at some point, the Norwegians are very relaxed in this case and simply stop so as not to endanger the animal.
In Norway, the police must be called on 112 or 113 in the event of accidents involving wild animals or personal injury. However, there is generally the European emergency number 112, which should always work in an emergency.
"Furred game clause" insurance - Do reindeer and elk fall under furred game?
As is so often the case, insurance is once again an issue when driving abroad, just as there is an Eastern European clause that we had to deal with when we went to Budapest for the 120th anniversary. There is a „wild boar clause“ in the partial casco insurance that regulates exactly what is paid for and what is not. It depends on your policy and insurer, but while deer, stags, hares, wild boar, marmots, foxes, badgers, lynxes, chamois and otters are usually covered, hedgehogs and reptiles are not.
And neither do pets or farm animals such as dogs, cats, cows or horses belong to the furred game. Reindeer, which are also called „reindeer“ in the crossword puzzles, are the farm animals of the Lapps.
In the next part, I travel across the Arctic Circle to Sweden
In the end, I found another great spot on the Lofoten Islands in Sandtorg, where I could really relax right by the sea. That's a special thing about Norway, this extraordinary silence, the higher you get in Norway, the quieter it gets around you.
In the next part, I'm heading home again, driving across the Arctic Circle in Sweden and it's completely over with the nice weather. But you know that about the far north beforehand, it can get really wet sometimes. Instead, I had mega sunny days on the Lofoten Islands, which was much more important for now.
