Customs break for Harley-Davidson - EU postpones decision by 14 days
Good news for Harley-Davidson and anyone who fancies a US motorcycle. The planned EU retaliatory tariffs on US goods will not come into force at the beginning of April as originally announced. Instead, the EU has postponed the decision by two weeks. For Harley, this means a brief respite – but whether it is more than just a delay remains to be seen.
What are tariffs all about?
The trade conflict between the EU and the US has been dragging on for years now. During his term in office, Donald Trump imposed punitive tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The EU responded with counter-tariffs on US products such as whiskey, jeans, and motorcycles—including Harley-Davidson.
The problem: the tariffs made US bikes in Europe massively more expensive. Harley-Davidson was faced with the choice of passing on the higher costs to customers or looking for alternatives. One solution was to relocate part of its production abroad in order to circumvent EU tariffs.
With Joe Biden as US president, the measures were temporarily suspended, but now the tariffs are threatening to return. The EU had originally planned to reintroduce them at the beginning of April. Now the deadline has been postponed by two weeks at short notice.
No official confirmation yet, but initial reports
Unfortunately, there has been no official announcement from the EU Commission regarding the postponement of tariffs. Neither the press office nor official communications have confirmed the decision so far. Nevertheless, reputable news agencies such as dpa and Reuters, that the EU has postponed the introduction of the measures.
According to these reports, the decision is primarily intended to allow room for further negotiations with the US. It remains to be seen whether the EU Commission will issue an official statement in the coming days or whether the postponement will take place without any major communication.
Why the delay?
Intense negotiations are taking place behind the scenes. One important reason for the postponement is new threats from the US. Donald Trump has announced that he will impose 200 percent punitive tariffs on European products such as champagne. This increases the pressure on the EU to avoid an escalation of the trade dispute.
The postponement could mean two things:
1. The EU wants to buy time, to find a diplomatic solution with the US and prevent a new trade conflict.
2. Further internal discussions will take place., whether the tariffs should really be enforced in this form—after all, they would also harm European traders and consumers.
What does this mean for Harley-Davidson?
For Harley-Davidson, the delay is positive for now. The brand will be spared from new EU tariffs for the time being, which means that US models will not immediately become more expensive. This affects both dealers and buyers who have a new Harley on their wish list.
If the tariffs do come into effect in mid-April, the situation could change quickly. Retailers would then either have to adjust their prices or find other ways to offset the additional costs.
What happens next?
The situation remains unclear until mid-April. Will the EU maintain its tariffs, or will there be a new agreement with the US? The question of how the US government will position itself also plays a role, and the whole situation could escalate further.
For bikers, this means waiting and watching. There have been no price increases yet, but depending on the outcome of the negotiations, that could change. Anyone looking to buy a Harley should keep a close eye on developments.
