Tire blowout on the highway
A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Switzerland and his 53-year-old wife, who was riding pillion, were injured in a traffic accident on the Hansalinie A1 between the Stuckenborstel and Bockel junctions on Thursday afternoon.
The man was traveling toward Bremen at a speed of approximately 120 kilometers per hour at around 1:15 p.m. when the rear tire of his Harley-Davidson burst. He managed to slow down slightly, but the heavy motorcycle began to swerve.
The passenger lost her grip behind her husband and fell off the motorcycle onto the road. Drivers who had noticed the accident slowed down and, thinking quickly, positioned their semi-trucks diagonally in front of the woman to protect her from the traffic behind.
The 53-year-old woman was flown by rescue helicopter to the Diakonieklinikum hospital in Rotenburg with serious injuries. Her husband suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. The motorway had to be closed for about an hour while the rescue operation was underway. The police estimate the damage to property at around €2,500.
