Revolution Max 1250T

The new Sportster S is powered by the Revolution Max 1250T engine, a liquid-cooled V2 that is completely tuned for power from the basement. The torque curve remains flat across the entire speed range - a beefy power delivery for dynamic acceleration from a standstill and powerful pulling power in the middle speed range.

  • Displacement: 1,252 cm³
  • Bore x Stroke: 105.0mm x 72.3mm
  • Power: 90 kW (122 HP)/7,500 rpm
  • Maximum torque: 125 Nm/6,000 rpm
  • Rotation speed: 9,500 rpm
  • Compression ratio: 12.0:1

The Revolution Max 1250T is derived from the Revolution Max 1250 engine of the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 models, from which it differs primarily in the following features:

Harley-Davidson Sportster S Revolution Max Engine 16
Harley-Davidson Sportster S Revolution Max engine
  • Cylinder heads with smaller valves, narrower channels and a modified combustion chamber ensure increased flow speed and thus rapid gas exchange and optimal filling of the cylinder, which increases torque in the low and medium speed range between 3,000 and 6,000 rpm.
  • The new combustion chamber geometry also requires an adapted shape of the pistons.
  • Intake funnels that have been redesigned in terms of length and shape as well as the optimized volume of the airbox ensure the best possible performance across the entire usable speed range.
  • Optimized cam profiles and timing of the variable valve control also make a decisive contribution to the desired performance characteristics.

Revolution Max 1250T – Highlights

  • V2 architecture: A longitudinally installed V2 engine with a 60-degree cylinder angle is characterized by a narrow design that allows the masses to be grouped close to the center of gravity for active handling without affecting the space available for legs and feet. Two throttle bodies in a flow-efficient downdraft arrangement between the cylinders minimize turbulence and flow resistance in the intake tract.
  • Weight-optimized design: With its low weight, the engine also helps to keep the overall vehicle weight low. This benefits acceleration, agility and braking behavior as well as consumption.
  • The finite element method and modern optimization processes in engine development help to reduce the mass of cast and molded components.
  • The weight-saving design features also include one-piece light metal cylinders with galvanic nickel-silicon carbide coating.
  • The valve and primary drive covers are made of lightweight magnesium alloy.

  • Drive as a supporting chassis component: The Revolution Max 1250T is also integrated as a supporting part in the chassis of the new Sportster S.
  • The engine fulfills two functions: It serves as a drive and is also a structural element of the chassis.
  • By dispensing with a classic main frame, the chassis has a particularly low weight and extremely high torsional rigidity.
  • A front frame element, a middle segment and the rear frame are bolted directly to the engine.
  • The engine is designed to be particularly robust and rigid so that it can effectively fulfill its function as a chassis component.
  • The advantage for the driver is optimized driving characteristics thanks to significant weight savings, high torsional rigidity and masses centralized directly at the center of gravity.
  • Liquid cooling: Liquid cooling ensures a stable, controllable engine temperature for consistent performance under a wide range of environmental conditions and in all driving situations - whether in cold or warm weather, at high speed or in traffic jams, in relaxed or sporty driving. The engine oil temperature is also regulated via a cooling system, which ensures optimal lubrication and long oil change intervals even under the toughest operating conditions.

  • Four-valve cylinder heads: Cylinder heads with four valves each allow particularly large valve cross-sections. Harley-Davidson has optimized the gas flow through the combustion chamber to achieve the desired power delivery.
  • Dual Overhead Cams Per Cylinder (DOHC) and Variable Valve Timing (VVT): The Revolution Max 1250T features a separate intake and exhaust camshaft on each cylinder. This DOHC design allows independent, variable intake and exhaust valve timing (VVT), each optimized for the front and rear cylinders. VVT contributes to a wider usable speed range and, in addition to torque development, also improves fuel consumption. This enables powerful acceleration from low revs as well as exciting revving and high peak performance. The hydraulic valve clearance compensation contributes to the engine's low mechanical noise. At the same time, this eliminates the need for complex regular maintenance procedures, which in turn saves inspection costs.
  • Light metal forged pistons:
  • The piston crowns are milled to achieve a precise compression ratio of 12.0:1. The engine achieves its rated performance with fuel of at least 91 octane, but can also handle gasoline with a lower octane number if necessary, with the engine management using a knock sensor automatically preventing damage caused by knocking or ringing.
  • A coating on the piston skirt helps reduce frictional resistance.
  • For high performance, piston rings with low preload reduce friction.
  • The piston rings are coated for increased service life.
  • Two spray oil nozzles directed from below onto the piston crowns help dissipate the combustion heat.
  • Balancer shafts: Integrated balancer shafts help reduce engine vibrations for increased driving comfort and longevity. The balance shafts are tuned to allow just enough vibration so that the motorcycle feels alive.
  • Clutch and transmission: The engine and the six-speed transmission share a common housing in the new Revolution Max. The clutch is operated via a large cross-section Bowden cable for smooth operation with consistent separation and low friction. Their anti-hopping function prevents the engine from over-revving when downshifting and suppresses rear wheel stalling.

Sportster S: Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements

The new Sportster S is equipped with the Harley-Davidson Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements, a package of electronic assistance systems that prove helpful in difficult road conditions and dangerous situations. They are controlled electronically and are based on the latest chassis, braking and drive control technology.

The Sportster S has a sensor system (Inertial Measurement Unit, IMU), which is made up of several inertial sensors on six spatial axes and continuously measures the lean angle while driving. The curve-optimized electronic assistance systems take into account that there is less tire grip available for braking or accelerating in curves than when driving straight ahead, and adapt their control interventions accordingly.

  • Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS)

ABS prevents the wheels from locking when braking and helps the driver to maintain control during emergency braking while driving straight ahead. It controls the front and rear brakes independently of each other. The cornering anti-lock braking system (C-ABS) also includes the lean angle in this control. When cornering, not all of the traction is available to transmit the braking force. C-ABS automatically takes this into account. The integrated stoppie control (Rear-Wheel Lift Mitigation, RLM) counteracts the lifting of the rear wheel during heavy braking in order to optimally align the deceleration forces with the driver's braking commands.

Custombike Show 2025 - Bad Salzuflen motorcycle fair

  • Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS)

The TCS traction control prevents excessive slip on the rear wheel when accelerating and thus supports the driver, especially when tire grip is limited, such as in precipitation, suddenly changing road surfaces or on unpaved roads. The C-TCS cornering traction control also takes the current lean angle into account. In the pre-programmed driving modes, the cornering traction control interventions vary in intensity. In the freely programmable driving modes, the driver can preselect the strength of the C-TCS interventions in three levels.

In addition, C-TCS can be deactivated in any driving mode when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running. When switching to Rain mode, C-TCS is automatically reactivated, but can then be deactivated again. C-TCS can be switched off by pressing a button on the right side of the handlebar.

TCS also includes wheelie control (Front-Wheel Lift Mitigation, FLM), which limits the height and duration of a front wheel lifting when accelerating. The strength of this intervention also differs in the different driving modes, with Rain being the most restrictive mode and Sport/Off-Road having the weakest interventions. When traction control is deactivated, the FLM function is also deactivated.

  • Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System (C-DSCS)

The C-DSCS cornering traction control system is used to reduce excessive slip on the rear wheel and to prevent the rear wheel from locking due to drive influences. This can otherwise occur when abruptly downshifting or closing the throttle grip on slippery roads.

If C-DSCS detects such a driving situation, it automatically adjusts the peripheral speed of the wheel to the driving speed by regulating the motor torque. The system also takes the lean angle into account.

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Correct tire pressure is just as important for the handling of the motorcycle as it is for the life of the tires. The tire air pressure monitoring system TPMS shows the tire pressures on the color display and warns the driver if the tire pressure is too low.

Sportster S: driving modes

The Sportster S offers five selectable driving modes that electronically regulate the driving dynamics of the machine and specify the intensity of the electronic interventions. Three of them are pre-programmed and two more can be individually adjusted. Each mode affects power delivery, engine braking, cornering ABS (C-ABS) and cornering traction control (C-TCS).

The driver can select the driving mode using the mode button on the right of the handlebar, with some exceptions both when stationary and while driving. The selected mode is indicated by a symbol on the color display.

With the exception of Road mode, the driver can deactivate the driving modes in the settings menu of the display. The freely configurable modes can only be selected during operation using the mode button once they have been activated in the Settings menu.

Harley-Davidson Sportster S Revolution Max
Harley-Davidson Sportster S Revolution Max
  • Road mode: The balanced Road mode is intended for everyday use and commuting. The engine offers a less sharp power delivery than in Sport mode, C-ABS and C-TCS intervene earlier. If a malfunction occurs, the driving mode system automatically switches to Road mode.
  • Sport mode: Sport mode offers the most unfiltered interaction between driver and machine. The rider experiences the full performance potential of the motorcycle directly and with the highest precision, with unlimited peak performance and all the revving pleasure. C-TCS works at the lowest level that is still sensible for road use and with increased engine braking effect when coasting.
  • Rain Mode: This mode is designed for rain or otherwise reduced traction. This makes it ideal for riders who are still getting familiar with the motorcycle. Revving speed and power are significantly reduced in favor of manageable acceleration, as is the engine braking effect, while C-ABS and C-TCS work at the highest level.
  • Custom mode: The Sportster S offers two freely programmable driving modes that allow the driver to configure characteristics specifically tailored to their personal preferences or situations. Within certain limits, the driver can set the engine characteristics, engine braking effect and revving as desired, as well as the intensity of the C-TCS and C-ABS interventions. For example, it is possible to combine the powerful power delivery of Sport mode with a reduced engine braking effect.

design

In profile, the new Sportster S appears flat and powerful. The tank and rear form a visual frame for the engine as the heart of the machine. The massive front tire evokes associations with the no-frills front ends of classic bobbers, while the rear, with a raised exhaust and a slim solo seat, is reminiscent of the legendary Harley-Davidson flat track racer XR750. A powerful upside-down fork at the front and the wide tires at the rear provide references to high-performance sports bikes.

“Every visual design element of the Sportster S is an expression of power,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of styling and design. “This motorcycle is a wolf in wolf’s clothing.”

The drivetrain is trimmed with lightweight magnesium engine covers with a Chocolate Satin finish. Textures, colors, surfaces and details give the Sportster S the look of an individually built show bike.

engine

The heart of the new Sportster S is the Revolution Max 1250T engine with a displacement of 1,252 cubic centimeters. The latest version of the latest liquid-cooled Harley-Davidson V2 is tuned for high torque in the lower speed range and a flat torque curve across the entire usable speed range. The power development allows powerful acceleration and powerful pulling power. At the same time, Harley is once again relying on the engine as a load-bearing chassis component to save weight. In addition, lightweight materials contribute to the good power-to-weight ratio. When ready to drive, the Sportster S only weighs 228 kilograms. The raised 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust system ensures a pleasantly sonorous sound.

State-of-the-art technology for safety and driving pleasure

The new Sportster S brings the entire spectrum of modern technology to the table for a safe and intense driving experience that is state-of-the-art. Three pre-programmed driving modes (Sport, Road and Rain) electronically determine both the performance characteristics of the engine and the intensity of the driver assistance systems. With two freely programmable modes, the driver can tailor the driving experience even more specifically to his or her personal preferences or specific situations. The “Harley-Davidson Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements”, a package of electronic assistance systems to provide support in difficult road conditions and dangerous situations, adapts the power output and driving dynamics to the available grip when accelerating, coasting and braking - both when driving straight ahead in curves.

A round, four-inch TFT display as the main instrument is used to display all driving information as well as - in conjunction with a helmet headset - the infotainment from the driver's Bluetooth-compatible mobile device. With the free Harley-Davidson app, the driver always has music, navigation and hands-free functions under control. The vehicle lighting, which uses LED technology entirely, includes a Daymaker signature LED headlight for bright, homogeneous illumination of the road without annoying hotspots. In its striking oval capsule, the headlight also forms an unmistakable design element on the front of the vehicle, which allows other motorcyclists and road users to recognize the Sportster S at first glance.

landing gear

Since the drivetrain of the new Sportster S is designed as a load-bearing element, it eliminates the need for a classic frame. This saves weight and at the same time results in a very torsion-resistant chassis - crucial for precise handling. The welded tubular steel swing arm with an upper and a lower pulley additionally stiffens the chassis and, with its unique look, forms another unmistakable design feature.

The front and rear wheels of the new Sportster S are guided by fully adjustable spring elements: at the front there is a Showa upside-down fork with a dip tube diameter of 43 millimeters, at the rear there is a Showa central spring strut with an integrated compensation reservoir. The spring preload can be conveniently adjusted hydraulically at the rear using a rotary control on the left side of the vehicle.

WITH THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON ICONS COLLECTION, THE US MANUFACTURER CELEBRATES AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE DESIGN

The first model in the Icons Collection is the new Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Revival

NEW ISENBURG (04/26/2021) - With the Electra Glide Revival, Harley-Davidson today presents the new Icons Collection, an edition that will be expanded year after year in the future. It includes motorcycles that are produced in strictly limited quantities and that draw on traditional shapes and American style by taking up classic Harley-Davidson designs or ideas about the future of motorcycle design.

As part of the Icons Collection, Harley-Davidson will in future introduce one or two models every year that will be produced exclusively in that year. Production of such a model will neither be continued nor resumed at a later date.

Each motorcycle in the Icons Collection is provided with a serial number and the buyer receives a certificate of authenticity.

Harley-Davidson Kohl - Aachen Winter Sale

'The Hardwire' strategic plan , we are committed to bringing motorcycles to market that both increase desirability and continue our long tradition,” explains Jochen Zeitz , Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson . “That’s why I’m proud to present our new, strictly limited Icons Collection today, extraordinary adaptations of production bikes that form a successful synthesis of our great past and our promising future.”

The first model in a new collection

The Harley-Davidson Icons Collection makes its debut with the introduction of the Electra Glide Revival , a retro classic for old-school fans looking for a motorcycle with a style that is as distinctive as it is timeless. Global production of the Electra Glide Revival is limited to 1,500 units, which are expected to be available at authorized Harley-Davidson dealers in late April. The recommended retail price in Germany is 29,995 euros.

The look of the Electra Glide Revival is inspired by the Electra Glide of 1969, the first Harley-Davidson that could be optionally equipped with a batwing fairing. With its distinctive shape, this fairing became an iconic and often copied styling feature that helped to instantly identify a Harley-Davidson among a variety of motorcycles.

Even on current Harley-Davidson models, the basic shape of the original design is immediately recognizable. In 1969, the fairing and panniers were only offered as white fiberglass parts, so the Electra Glide Revival replicates this look by painting the corresponding components in Birch White.

ROKKERTECH STRAIGHT AAA

The tank medallion inspired by the late sixties and the Electra Glide lettering on the front fender contribute to the classic style. The Electra Glide Revival is offered in a single livery, also inspired by the original 1969 color scheme: the tank is a two-tone Hi-Fi Blue and Black Denim, separated by a Birch White stripe. The fenders and side covers also have Hi-Fi Blue.

“In our fast-paced world, we are all constantly changing,” says Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of styling and design.

“The Electra Glide Revival is like a calm oasis in this hectic era. It brings to life the original Harley-Davidson DNA that laid the foundation for Grand American Touring.”

The design highlights of the Electra Glide Revival also include a solo saddle with black and white cover and chrome-plated railing. It is mounted on a shock absorber with an adjustable coil spring - another homage to the Harley-Davidson FL models of the 1960s and a functional feature that increases comfort.

Chrome-plated cross-spoke wheels and wide whitewall tires contribute to the nostalgic look, as does the shiny chrome layer on the front fender and case trim strips, the "ventilator" air filter cover, the fork tube covers and the additional headlights - a design that captivates the eye.

Milwaukee Eight 114

The Electra Glide Revival is powered by the Milwaukee Eight 114 V-Twin, which combines powerful performance with classic Harley-Davidson look, sound and feel.

  • Displacement: 1,868 cm3 ( 114 cui)
  • Maximum torque: 158 Nm at 3,250 rpm
  • Power: 69 kW (94 hp) at 5,250 rpm
  • Four-valve cylinder heads for optimal gas exchange and high performance
  • Double ignition for even, complete and energy efficient combustion
  • Six-speed Cruise Drive transmission for low engine speeds on the highway, low fuel consumption and high comfort

Additional features of the Harley-Davidson touring models

The Electra Glide Revival scores with classic style, but its technology is completely up to date. Your payload capacity and performance benefit from the rigid Harley-Davidson Touring frame, a double-loop steel tube construction with a backbone top cable. In conjunction with the chassis components, it is perfect for long journeys.

In order to ensure optimal driving behavior depending on the load, the preload of the spring struts, which are designed using emulsion technology, can be adjusted hydraulically by hand using a rotary control. The front wheel is guided by a 49 millimeter fork, which ensures linear damping characteristics with its dual bending valve technology.

The classic Batwing fairing features a high, clear windshield and the Splitstream Vent, a cleverly placed air intake that reduces turbulence in the rider's head area. An electronic cruise control system ensures increased driving comfort on long journeys, while a bright halogen headlight and two additional headlights ensure excellent illumination of the road and at the same time underline the nostalgic styling of the Electra Glide Revival.

The Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with color touchscreen supplies two speakers mounted in the fairing and offers, among other things, a modern navigation function. It can be used with control buttons or – when paired with a compatible headset – via voice control and is prepared for the use of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Also on board as standard are the Harley-Davidson RDRS Safety Enhancements, a package of driving safety systems that adapt the engine performance to the available traction when accelerating, decelerating and braking:

  • Cornering anti-lock braking system (C-ABS)
  • Corner-optimized electronic brake force distribution (C-ELB)
  • Cornering Traction Control (C-TCS)
  • Traction Slip Control (DSCS)
  • Vehicle Hold Assist (HHC)

Driving report Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Harleysite
Now the Harley-Davidson Pan America driving report 2021

The Harley-Davidson Pan America driving report

The Pan America presentation at a historic location, in the Westerburger Land!

HARLEY-DAVIDSON PAN AMERICA RIDING REPORT - Harley-Davidson flew 25 of the new Harley-Davidson Adventure models to the European presentation of the Pan America. Those responsible have emphasized several times that this is the first official international Pan America presentation and will give German and Austrian journalists the first opportunity to test the standard and special models in suitable terrain.

Harley-Davidson has set the priority of the two important markets high. The fact that Pan America was the first to be officially presented in Germany was intended to show how important the German-speaking customers are to them, for whom we report at the end. I found this statement very interesting.

The Pan America celebrates its official premiere in the Stöffel-Park industrial adventure park

Harley-Davidson has located Stöffel Park in Westerburger Land, an ideal place to test the Pan America. At first glance, the 140-hectare industrial adventure park is probably intended more for geologists, but as it later turned out, there is hardly a better place than the historic basalt quarry. In my imagination I can see the connections directly, a historic company from Milwaukee is essentially letting the boiling magma shoot up from the inner volcano on which we will ride the new Pan America.

Stöffel Park Pan America Adventure area. Photo credit: Harley-Davidson
Stöffel Park Pan America Adventure area. Photo credit: Harley-Davidson

The area is full of basalt, which was formed during a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. And that's exactly how they imagined it, they're launching the new Pan America into a new segment like a volcanic eruption, destroying everything that came before it and when the volcanic ash has settled, the competitors are wondering what happened now.

The admission numbers will tell us at the end of the year whether that will remain my fantasy. The 2021 contingent is limited, but Pan America will get its market share and its success will only be slowed down by low production numbers. Harley-Davidson is also addressing a completely new target group in addition to its existing customers, which will change a lot in the future.

What once started on a blank sheet of paper will cause quite a stir this year, I am very sure of this statement.

The new Revolution Max engine in reality

I'm starting now with the new Revolution Max engine , because that's the heart of the Pan America , around which everything else has been built. In addition, he will play a very important role Harley-Davidson This will also have an impact on the community and events; sometimes I already have the feeling that two different worlds are meeting here.

The new Harley-Davidson Revolution Max engine
The new Harley-Davidson Revolution Max engine

A very big topic is variable valve control , they haven't reinvented it, but they have implemented it very well. The engine has an incredible all-rounder quality, I wouldn't have expected that. The Revolution Max can run smoothly in rain mode and gets really angry in sport mode.

Harley-Davidson has placed emphasis on smoothly realizing low-end torque delivery at low speeds and off-road driving through throttle control. In the appropriate driving modes, the Pan America knows exactly what is required.

The Revolution Max Motor is adaptable!

And it was exactly this situation that I noticed immediately and positively in the field. This is one of the most important features of the engine, especially off-road. When off-road mode is activated, the driving behavior is completely different than, for example, in sport mode. From now on, a performance evaluation of the engine is only possible in combination with the specified driving mode, because that can change everything.

In any case, despite the cool temperatures, there were plenty of tarnished manifolds. Harley-Davidson has moved the second cylinder a little further to the left, so the rear manifold has better exhaust gas behavior and does not build up directly at the exhaust when the gases are transported away. Nowadays, engine temperatures can also be controlled by software. The more you can regulate in advance mechanically, the better, you might have thought.

The Revolution Max motor is water-cooled, so I won't be able to find out whether heat is a problem for it until the summer months.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Revolution Max engine
Harley-Davidson Pan America Revolution Max engine

The Revolution Max engine is a completely new development and cannot be compared with the Milwaukee-Eight. It is not a typical long-stroke engine, revs much higher, has less cubic capacity and adjustable engine management via the driving modes. There are hardly any noticeable vibrations, which was intended with the Milwaukee-Eight.

What is extremely noticeable is how smooth it runs and that it is very quiet, there is no clattering or rattling. I would never have expected Harley-Davidson to build something like that, whether they think it's good is another piece of paper, but they can definitely do it.

Pan America sports fashion – only flying is more beautiful

The engine and this whole system fit very well with the Pan America, the possible differences are really stark. I went up the highway in sport mode, you really have to hold on tight, I immediately felt my abdominal muscles again, especially the day after.

My colleague from Reitwagen in Austria measured about 6.6 seconds from 100km/h to 200km/h using GPS. That's really intense, according to the speedometer, the end was only announced for me at 227km/h. The Michelin studded tires are only permitted at 170 km/h, they are not intended for more than that, although I can attribute very good driving behavior to both tire versions. I was particularly impressed with the road version on wet roads, which I usually am not with the Michelin Scorcher. The tire performed well on dry roads anyway, although the outside temperature was only between 2 and 5 degrees. It will be interesting to see how this combination of power and grip performs in long-term testing.

Pan America spoke wheel

The spoked wheel would be my favorite, the individual spokes can be changed without removing the wheel.

The different driving modes work tremendously

It would be too easy to just look at the performance data of the engine; those days are over with the Pan America. The driver now has the opportunity to configure the character of the engine itself and can copy and reconfigure a driving mode, there are 5 settings, Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. In the standard version one mode can be customized, in the special version there are two. Even the engine braking effect is taken into account here, and the cornering ABS and cornering traction control adapt to the required situation in the same way. These options are new in the Harley world and they were absolutely convincing in the off-road and on-road test drives.

Lots of questions in the community

A reader asked me whether the Pan America would be suitable for a driving school. I would clearly say yes, because the driving mode configuration gives the driving instructor the opportunity to either set up a tame house cat for the student or for an advanced one Students a wild tiger to prepare him for anything. The Pan America only has full performance in Sport mode, which is hot and in this mode something really happens.

The Pan America is at home everywhere and is a corner chaser in sport mode.
The Pan America is at home everywhere and is a corner chaser in sport mode.

In rain mode you have plenty of safety reserves, so if you can't cope with that, you should probably reconsider riding a motorbike. Furthermore, the rain mode is ideal for novice drivers, even on dry roads; in this mode the Pan America is more in control. The new technology is amazing, but it will cause malice among purists, but it has always been that way.

Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements

This is a package of electronic assistance systems that makes driving very safe. A sophisticated sensor system that even has the lean angle under control. During the test drive on the road we had everything you could have, from rain, sleet and dry roads, everything was there. In rain mode, it is really tame, but it still starts moving without losing contact with the road and gives the driver a very safe driving experience even in the rain, which is where the sensors come into their own. It has cornering-optimized electronic brake force distribution, a cornering anti-lock braking system, cornering traction control and cornering traction control.

Off-road with the Pan America

I drove on the Basalt terrain on the first day and the maximum I could do was second gear. I didn't even get to use the real power because it was already moving so fast in the lower gears that I couldn't even do it as a driver I came along. We had two professionals with us who showed us around the area. When you saw how Busty Wolter and Tobi Weiser rode the Pan America, I really still had room for improvement. The two of them got us on track, I last went off-road 35 years ago, but that made me want more! I can only recommend such training with professionals to everyone, it really puts you in a good mood.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Special 1250 driving report
A terrain where she had to endure water and rockfalls.

Great handling off-road, it can do something!

My first concern was weight distribution and handling. In first gear you can stop easily and slowly start moving again after a few seconds of standing still. When you do balance exercises or balance yourself to go up a hill, the Pan America shows itself at its best. The Pan America weighs around 258 kilos when ready to drive, but you don't really notice much of it off-road. Their weight distribution is perfect; the word “mass centralization” is heard more and more in the development of new motorcycles.

Harley Davidson Pan America

The foot brake lever can be adjusted without tools! The footrest rubber was removed for off-road use. Part of the standard scope.

On the stony basalt terrain, I give her spurs!

Basically, the first two gears are easily enough here, if I turn the second gear up to 9000 rpm, flying is even nicer. It is brutal and tame at the same time, as soon as I turn off the accelerator, it immediately makes its power available and when I juggle it downhill between stones, I work with the engine brake and the easy-to-adjust Brembo brake.

Gravel, jumps, water and always full of energy!

There was a full program, going through the water, up the hill and back down again. There was gravel in the form of basalt everywhere, which immediately raised a few questions from some users who follow me on Facebook. The cooling fins are visually completely in the endangered area. When asked by the developers at Harley-Davidson, they tested it extensively and, just like with the battery, which is also housed there, they discovered no problems.

The battery is still easy to access, but protected from water. I can't really say that about the battery, we had two models that are registered in the Netherlands where the battery was discharged twice, that could have been due to the batteries, or because they were simply not charged enough and had been drained the others did not have this problem. It feels like it needs a strong battery, which will become apparent in a longer test window.

Pan America cooling fins and the battery
Pan America cooling fins and the batteryunderrun protection item no.: 49000191 €454

The cooling fins really can withstand a lot; none of the machines suffered any damage, which speaks for a good material. Harley-Davidson offers underbody protection in its range of accessories, so you can drive on the safe side and it visually rounds off the design.

There are plenty of accessories for the cross area

You can definitely improve the look of it, there are some accessories that you can make, but there are also some that you have to make. On the Harleysite Facebook page I gave the tank pad a must-have recommendation, you wouldn't believe what was going on there. Anyone who drives off-road and is annoyed about scratches, etc., I don't want to go into it any further.

Pan America tank pad
Pan America tank pad item no.: 57300291 / approx. €65.00

It's all about preserving the value as much as possible, and the tank pad contributes to that, because it's exactly at this point that I saw the paint starting to become matt and dull. This is because as a driver you build up stability there and you can do that particularly well when these pads are on. That's actually it, you can of course also use 3M film, but at some point it becomes unsightly at the edges and doesn't provide any support.

Main stand, radiator guard and lamp grille

If you really want to go off-road often, the radiator guard and the lamp grille certainly make sense; they look quite good. If you have the Pan America Standard on your bill, you should definitely order the main stand as well, as the Pan America can be set up very quickly and safely, which is particularly beneficial on unsafe surfaces. Quickly grease the chain, on ferry crossings or when tensioning the chain and assembling the wheel, the main stand always pays off. You can find more information about accessories in this article on the Harley site.

The Pan America lighting concept

LED lighting is very important on the Pan America, and on the Special there is even additional cornering light. The Adaptive Daymaker Signature headlight includes three additional LED lighting elements per side above the Daymaker main headlight. The system works, I tried it out a little in the field in the evening. The topic comes later in the long-term test.

You get full illumination with the additional Auxiliary LED Forward Light Set. Installed as a pair, each light performs three functions in one housing: fog lights, additional low beam and off-road lights. The lights were developed together with the machine, which is why they are easy and precise to install.

[s201_bai id=”2″]

The indicators are pure indicators and no additional lights. Overall, the lighting provides very good illumination, although the standard does not have cornering lights.

Pan America 1250 Special with adaptive seat height and semi-active chassis

To understand the whole thing, you have to know that there are actually two systems, only the Pan America Special has the semi-active chassis and that can also be upgraded with the Adaptive Ride Height System.

Harley-Davidson and the Showa chassis

The semi-active chassis consists of a complex system that receives information from various sensors. The damping at the front and rear is electronically adjusted to the respective ground and road conditions. Here Harley-Davidson worked in cooperation with the renowned chassis manufacturer Showa, with the control software being from Harley-Davidson itself.

It has 191 mm of suspension travel at the front and rear, and a Showa upside-down fork with a 47 mm standpipe diameter and semi-active damper control is installed at the front.
The rear spring element is a Showa (Balanced Free Rear Cushion-lite) central spring strut with electronically controlled preload and semi-active damping control.

[s201_bai id=”1″]

The vehicle loading control system registers the weight of the driver, front passenger and luggage and automatically adjusts the spring preload of the rear shock absorber. These are cool features, to sum it up, the sensors pass on all the information to the software in order to get the most optimal driving behavior for the driver.

Now to get this whole theory back into practice, everything worked great in my test rides, no bottoming out on the terrain, at high speeds over 200 km/h in a long curve there was no need to commute and want to ride on one bike They only drive if you give full throttle in Sport mode. It is very easy to control.

Adaptive ride height system

And now we come to the Adaptive Ride Height System, the automatic chassis lowering. At first I didn't understand at all how it works and especially why it doesn't do what I expected in certain settings. There is the option to deactivate it via the menu navigation if you are a little taller and don't want to use this feature. But I hadn't deactivated it and had probably activated a driving mode that it doesn't work with. When you come to a stop, it goes down very smoothly and goes back up again when you start.

When I want to turn it off, I'm in lowered mode, when I get off and come back after a short while, it's up. Only when I sit on it and start the engine does it shut down again. This is the point where I would have liked an additional switch to manually intervene in this system. This may change in the future via a software update, because in my opinion it would otherwise be contradictory.

This basically only affects smaller drivers, because you have to sit on it, otherwise nothing happens. I don't want to rule out that I did everything right. Otherwise it works very well and taller drivers get an even better feeling of standing, especially when stationary. You have to say that Harley-Davidson is really ahead of the game here; I never knew of a system like that before. And as soon as the name Showa was mentioned, I was amazed at the price announcement, which I still do today.

In the following photo, I am standing in lowered mode. I'm 1.83cm tall, from the floor to the top of my trousers it's 1.07m with boots on. The lowering is 25 to 50 millimeters, depending on the automatically adjusted spring preload on the rear wheel. In addition, the seat is height-adjustable in two levels on both models.

The 6.8 inch touch screen display

Pan America Adventure helmets and clothing
Pan America Adventure helmets and clothing

What's a little lacking now is the 6.8-inch touchscreen display; it can be swiveled and is easy to read. The first difference to the Boom!Box is that the touchscreen cannot be operated by touch while driving and there are no speakers. At Pan America everything is done via a headset, which is recommended anyway. There are already helmets from Harley-Davidson for adventure bikes that are prepared for a headset with a recess inside.

I personally am using the Harley-Davidson Bluetooth Helmet Boom! Audio N02 Full-Face - 98208-20EX has been on the road, a system from Sena is already integrated here. Harley-Davidson is probably planning to release another cross helmet in the future, also with a similar system to the full face helmet. But I'm very happy with what I have, it has the mesh system to communicate with other drivers and can do everything you need, it just doesn't look like a crosser.

Now the Harley-Davidson Pan America driving report 2021 41
Now the Harley-Davidson Pan America driving report 2021 117

There's so much going on inside the touchscreen that I can't fit it all into this report. It should be mentioned that the driver can easily connect his cell phone to the Harley-Davidson system via Bluetooth; this requires the HD Connect APP. Navigation is activated via the cell phone, it does not require any map updates, the infotainment system gets this information via the cell phone and even saves the maps offline in the HD Connect APP.

HD Pan America infotainment system
HD Pan America infotainment system

And if you have a cell phone on board, you may also need some power! What I discovered almost knocked my socks off. What many manufacturers in the electronics industry have not been able to achieve to date, I now find at Harley-Davidson. They have installed a USB-C plug, which is hard to believe, so you are really up to date, so you can stay in the German language. I installed my system straight away and it worked great.

On the road with the Pan America

Now I've gotten to know her with a completely different character, for the first time I'm driving in street and sport mode. It's hard to believe, now it's time to hold on tight, the music starts playing at just 2000 revolutions and it only stops at an incredible 9000 revolutions. When driving on winding roads, road mode is sufficient, so the safety systems are fully active if necessary.

Sport mode also means sport for the driver!

On the highway, however, the Sportmode makes its appearance, hold on and go. I have to keep telling myself that I'm sitting on an enduro, a Harley one at that, and the digital speedometer is marching with me to 227 km/h. That was really an experience, not really anything new for me, but definitely in connection with the Pan America. At times I felt like I was sitting on a burner. But of course, it has 1250 cubic meters, 128 NM and 152 HP, there's something going on! I don't want to know what's going on with her when she gets an expert mapping.

Whether it can withstand all of this in the long term and what its suitability for long distances is will only be found out with the really longer test. The driving behavior with luggage, the consumption and what happens after 5 hours of motorway driving, how comfortable is the seat really, it was great, but the cards are reshuffled on long journeys.

The Harleysite conclusion!

They always say that first impressions count!

The first WOW effect for me was still the price announcement, nobody expected that it would even end up under 20,000 euros. In that case, I'll immediately forgive her for a few weaknesses that I noticed. The steering damper on the Special, only she has one and it was able to totally irritate me. Off-road I always wanted to let the front wheel go its way and it always pushed back slightly. The developers have said it was built specifically for the site so there would be no harsh setbacks. In talking to colleagues, I found that opinions were actually divided, there were advocates, so it's probably a very individual view.

In the curves on the road it was a similar situation for me, I don't like it, this slight counter pressure irritates me. Unfortunately it is not adjustable, but I can imagine where it will actually find its purpose, namely when traveling at full speed with luggage. If the aluminum case system is installed, I could imagine that it contributes significantly to stable driving behavior. But that's just a guess, the whole case story has to come later, the accessories weren't the focus now, this was mainly about the Pan America itself.

Harley-Davidson Pan America revolver grip
Harley-Davidson Pan America revolver grip

I don't like the large window, it breaks the lines of the road markings, I would replace it, and it's too flimsy for me. The disc adjustment system is ingenious, press the trigger like a revolver and the disc can be easily adjusted with one hand. But the plastic seems too cheap to me; an aluminum concept would have shown much more value here. The only question is, would the price have been able to be maintained?

And now? That's it, there's nothing more to complain about from my side, I think she's hot! The engine and electronics really blow your mind, the set-up even works as intended. For those who have already bought the Standard or Special, you can rest assured, the first impression is great and you are getting a great bike! There is a difference between the standard and the special, but it's better to have the standard than none at all.

The chassis is really great, the standard is not really inferior to the Special, because it has fewer accessories, it weighs less and is a bit purer. My recommendation would still be the Special, it simply convinced me, and I have to mention that I also drove it more. For me, the heated grips, the main stand and the chassis would be important, otherwise I'm sure that both models will be seen on the roads often in the future, because it was a lot of fun!

Pan America accessories

You have to give it to Harley-Davidson, the Pan America accessories range is extensive and is already online before the Pan America is launched. That has to be the case, because it is obviously in great demand.

There has been a real craze for the adventure tourer from Harley-Davidson. In a Harleysite interview, Roger Gierz, one of the managing directors of Harley-Davidson Hamburg Nord, said;

“In all my years at Harley-Davidson, I have never experienced this in this form, where customers order a new model from Harley-Davidson before they have even seen it in real life.”

At the moment only the Papp America is available in the shops of the authorized dealers. Some authorized dealers pass around a Pan America demo model that was probably created using a 3D printer. That's why some of the fittings on the Pan America 3D don't look as good as they will ultimately be on the production vehicle. But to get a little impression of her in advance, it's certainly interesting.

Jochen Zeitz at the Pan America

Other HD dealers also reported to me this phenomenon, that demand for Pan America is high, some of whom have already sold half their quota. There are a noticeable number of new customers who have never owned a Harley-Davidson before. Well, we'll see if the Pan America is actually as good as the spec sheet predicts. In any case, the components installed are really good, the chassis is particularly impressive, I'm looking forward to the first test rides with the Pan America 1250 Special .

The accessories program is already online on the Harley-Davidson website, but there's just one catch! The Pan America Special in particular has almost everything on board, so you won't miss much at first. The main stand would be one of the first things on an Enduro, but what you need is already included with the Special. Something else will be found.

Adaptive Ride Height Pan America

A highlight is the adaptive chassis, which lowers itself shortly before stopping. This is unique in its class so far.

[s201_bai id=”1″]

Nobody expected that, the idea behind it is simply that you always have a firm grip when stopping in any situation. Even small bikers will be able to handle the Pan America. In combination with the Showa chassis and the upside-down fork, it's a pretty perfect solution.

Despite the good standard equipment, there is still something to be found, the additional Daymakers are included, for example, a lot of light can never hurt, good lighting is an advantage, especially on impassable routes.

The normal light output in combination with the cornering lights is certainly impressive, but the additional lights are very helpful on unknown routes or in fog.

The Screamin Eagle silencer looks a lot better, let's hope that it is also available in Germany with an EC approval. The exhaust has a matt brushed finish and is particularly eye-catching, materials made from titanium and stainless steel are used, and the end cap is made from carbon fiber. It is intended to produce a deeper and sportier sound and ensure a significant weight reduction of up to 42%.

The tank bag for the Pan America

Especially on long tours, you don't want to be without a tank bag despite having a suitcase. Many things can be stored here for the journey, whether it's drinks, coins/cards for toll booths abroad where you need to get money quickly, or to take a look at the conventional map. There is always something that should be within easy reach.

There is a rain cover for the tank bag, the interior is orange, so you can still see something in poor lighting conditions. The dividers and the carrying handle are also practical, so everything doesn't get mixed up when you take the tank bag down after the tour.

On long tours I like to use a tank bag to store all the important things that need to be quickly accessed in the tent or accommodation.

It continues with grille protection for the radiator and additional crash bars.

The travelers among us will need the luggage carrier. There are aluminum cases and bags in the Pan America accessories range. The performance data already shows us that the suitcases and bags have to be firmly attached in order not to cause any surprises when driving quickly and so that driving stability is not impaired.

Pan America 1250 Special with adaptive seat height and semi-active chassis

With the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models, Harley-Davidson presents two brand new adventure touring bikes. The company has mobilized all its design resources to equip the new models with cutting-edge technology that enriches the driving experience.

Harley Davidson Pan America 1250

Semi-active chassis

The Pan America 1250 Special is characterized by a semi-active chassis that is electronically adjustable at the front and rear. Based on the data stream from the vehicle sensors, this suspension automatically adjusts the damping to the ground conditions and driving activity. The semi-active chassis components come from Showa and the control software comes from Harley-Davidson itself.

  • The suspension travel is 191 mm front and rear.
  • The front fork is a Showaa BFF (Balance Free Forks) upside-down fork with a 47 millimeter standpipe diameter and semi-active damping control.
  • The rear spring element is a Showa BFRC (Balanced Free Rear Cushion-lite) central spring strut with electronically controlled preload and semi-active damping control. It supports the swingarm against the rear frame via a progressive lever system. This progressive system ensures a high level of directional stability and driving comfort on the road, as well as impressive off-road driving characteristics.
  • The vehicle loading control system registers the weight of the driver, front passenger and luggage and automatically adjusts the spring preload of the rear shock absorber.
  • The semi-active chassis reacts to the suspension compression, the road speed, the vertical acceleration of the motorcycle, the lean angle and the speed at which this changes, as well as the engine load and any braking forces specified by the rider on the throttle grip in order to maintain the preselected comfort level. The control takes place depending on the selected driving mode.
  • The semi-active chassis has five pre-programmed profiles that are incorporated into each driving mode program:
  • Comfort: maximizes driving comfort through softer damping and comfortably absorbs uneven road surfaces.
  • Balanced: balanced ratio of comfort and stability for general driving tasks.
  • Sport: the greatest possible directional stability with harder damping for a committed driving style.
  • Off-Road Soft: Reduced damping at the beginning of the compression phase absorbs hard impacts even more efficiently and at the same time minimizes handlebar slap. Ideal for forest paths, washboard slopes and rocky terrain.
  • Off-Road Firm: increased damping at the beginning of the compression phase for sporty driving or when more even cushioning is desired. Ideal for soft or clayey soils.
  • The profile of the semi-active chassis cannot be changed within a pre-programmed driving mode. However, with the freely programmable custom driving modes, a preferred chassis profile can also be saved.

Harley-Davidson is the first motorcycle manufacturer in the world to offer this new technology. The chassis is automatically lowered to stop and raised to the optimal position for driving after starting. The system thus allows the driver to comfortably climb onto the Pan America 1250 Special while stationary and to have safe contact with the ground. The lowering is 25 to 50 millimeters, depending on the automatically adjusted spring preload on the rear wheel.

  • Suspension travel, lean angle, ground clearance and ride comfort remain unaffected while driving.
  • The automatic chassis lowering offers four selectable modes:
  • Auto mode: The system automatically sets the lowering speed based on the braking force in order to fully lower the seat height in time when stopping.
  • Short Delay and Long Delay Modes: In these modes, lowering is delayed to keep the seat height up at low speeds, such as when driving slowly in a parking lot.
  • Locked mode: The automatic lowering of the seat height is deactivated. This mode is intended, for example, for tall drivers who do not want the vehicle to be lowered when stationary, or for off-road driving at low speeds.

Driving assistance systems – RDRS Safety Enhancements

The Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special are equipped with a technology package to adapt acceleration and deceleration forces to the available tire grip. The RDRS Safety Enhancements support the driver both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. Not noticeable during normal driving, they prove to be particularly helpful in difficult road conditions and in dangerous situations. They are controlled electronically and are based on the most modern chassis, braking and drive control technology.

Some RDRS Safety Enhancements also work in an inclined position - a motorcycle-specific technology. Harley-Davidson motorcycles with RDRS Safety Enhancements have a sensor system (Inertial Measurement Unit, IMU) that records the angle of inclination of the two-wheeler when cornering and passes it on to the RDRS system. Since the size of the front and rear wheels is different on many motorcycles, the two wheels rotate at slightly different speeds when cornering. The contact area of the tire also changes as soon as the motorcycle corners. The curve technology takes these factors into account and takes the inclination into account in its interventions.

  • Reflex braking system with cornering-optimized electronic brake force distribution (Cornering Enhanced Electronically Linked Braking, C-ELB)

The Reflex braking system with corner-optimized electronic brake force distribution ensures balanced deceleration on the front and rear wheels at the same time during a variety of braking maneuvers. The system couples the front and rear wheel brakes more strongly the higher the braking force the driver applies. When braking lightly and at low speeds, the brakes work almost independently of each other. In combined operation, the system automatically applies braking force to the rear wheel when the handbrake lever is pressed. C-ELB takes the lean angle into account when controlling the braking force and modulates the braking force ratio with the aim of allowing the motorcycle to follow the line chosen by the rider with the greatest possible directional stability. The C-ELB is deactivated in the Off-Road Plus and Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes .

The cornering ABS also includes a stoppie control (Rear-Wheel Lift Mitigation, RLM), which is based on the C-ABS sensors and a six-axis motion sensor system to counteract the lifting of the rear wheel during heavy braking and thus optimally use the deceleration forces to align with the driver's braking commands. The amount and duration of rear wheel lift permitted by RLM depends on the selected driving mode. The intervention is greatest in Rain mode and lowest in Off-Road mode. In Off-Road Plus and Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes, both RLM and rear wheel ABS are deactivated .

The C-TCS cornering traction control takes the current lean angle into account and thus prevents excessive slip on the rear wheel when accelerating, even in corners. In each of the pre-programmed driving modes, the interventions of the traction control or cornering traction control are different.

TCS also includes wheelie control (Front-Wheel Lift Mitigation, FLM), which limits the height and duration of a front wheel lifting when accelerating (wheelie). The strength of this intervention also differs in the different driving modes, with Rain being the most restrictive mode and Sport/Off-Road having the weakest interventions. When traction control is deactivated, the FLM function is also deactivated.

In the Off-Road Plus and Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes, the traction control works without taking the lean angle into account. This allows the driver to accelerate powerfully out of ruts, banked curves and embankments. In the Off-Road Plus driving mode, TCS allows even more slip on the rear wheel, which can only be used sensibly in pure off-road driving. At the same time, the FLM function is deactivated so that advanced riders can use the throttle to lift the front wheel over obstacles.

  • Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System ( C-DSCS)

If the cornering traction control system C-DSCS detects excessive slip on the rear wheel during coasting operation, it adjusts the peripheral speed of the wheel to the driving speed by regulating the engine torque. The system also takes the lean angle into account. Since the function is based on the ABS, it is naturally inactive in the Off-Road Plus and Custom Off-Road Plus driving modes. In addition, traction control may be impaired when traction control is deactivated.

  • Vehicle Hold Assist (Hill Hold Control, HHC)

When activated, the HHC vehicle hold assistant holds the brakes for the driver to prevent the motorcycle from rolling on hills after the driver has released the brakes. This mainly involves stopping and waiting in traffic, for example uphill in front of a stop sign, downhill in slow-moving traffic or on a steep parking garage ramp. In traffic situations like this, confident starting is child's play thanks to HHC: the system automatically holds the motorcycle with the brakes until the driver accelerates and presses the clutch. HHC can also be activated horizontally if the driver wants to maintain the position without applying the brakes themselves.

Pan America technology
Pan America technology

After stopping, the driver activates HHC with a short braking pulse using the handbrake lever or the footbrake pedal. If he continues to maintain the brake pressure after braking hard until the vehicle comes to a standstill, HHC comes into action without an additional braking impulse. An HHC control LED informs the driver as soon as the system is active and the ABS continues to apply brake pressure independently after the brake is released. If the driver tries to activate the HHC when it is not available - for example with the side stand folded out - the indicator light flashes. To automatically deactivate the HHC function, the driver simply needs to start from a standstill or give another braking impulse.

HHC is not intended as a parking brake and therefore releases the brakes automatically when the side stand is folded out or the engine is switched off. In most situations, the indicator light will begin flashing after five minutes and HHC will automatically release the brakes shortly thereafter if no further input from the driver is made. HHC is not a replacement for a parking brake in any situation.

If desired, the driver can switch the HHC function off and on again via the display.

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The tire air pressure monitoring system TPMS shows the tire pressures on the color display and warns the driver if the tire pressure is too low. It is standard on the Pan America 1250 Special and can be retrofitted on the Pan America 1250 in a specialist workshop upon request.

Driving modes

Various selectable driving modes electronically regulate the driving dynamics of the machine and specify the intensity of the electronic interventions. There are five modes available for the basic model, four of which are pre-programmed and one can be customized. In addition, the Pan America 1250 Special has two additional modes that can also be freely defined by the driver.

The driving modes pre-programmed for both models are Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. Each mode affects power delivery, engine braking, Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) and Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS). On the Pan America Special, the modes also influence the function of the semi-active chassis.

The driver can select the driving mode using the mode button on the right of the handlebar, with some exceptions both when stationary and while driving. The selected mode is indicated by a separate symbol on the color display.

With the exception of Road mode, the driver can deactivate the driving modes in the Settings menu of the touchscreen display. The freely configurable modes can only be selected during operation using the mode button once they have been activated in the Settings menu.

  • Sport mode: Sport mode offers the most unfiltered interaction between driver and machine. The rider experiences the full performance potential of the motorcycle directly and with the highest precision, with unlimited peak performance and full revving pleasure. The C-TCS works at the lowest level that is still sensible for road use and with increased engine braking effect when coasting. On the Pan America 1250 Special, Sport mode increases the damping and provides more feedback when driving with commitment.
  • Road mode: The balanced Road mode is intended for everyday use and commuting. The engine offers a less sharp power delivery than in Sport mode, C-ABS and C-TCS intervene earlier. On the Pan America 1250 Special, a more comfortable chassis setting is activated in Road mode.
  • Rain Mode: This mode is designed for rain or otherwise limited traction. This makes Rain mode ideal for riders who are still getting familiar with the motorcycle. Revving speed and power are significantly reduced in favor of manageable acceleration, as is the engine braking effect, while C-ABS and C-TCS work at the highest level. On the Pan America 1250 Special, the cushioning is also trimmed for maximum comfort in Rain mode.
  • Off-Road mode: This mode is intended for unpaved roads and moderate off-road use. The power output is limited to a medium level and the torque characteristics are optimized for off-road use with less torque and power in the upper speed range. The C-ABS works in off-road mode on both wheels, but with characteristics specifically tailored to gravel and the like. The C-TCS is active at the same level as in Sport mode. On the Pan America 1250 Special, the semi-active chassis is set for light off-road operation in Off-Road mode.
  • Off-Road Plus mode: This mode supports experienced off-road pilots in difficult terrain, ideally using off-road sports tires from the Harley-Davidson accessory range. The aim is to give the driver the best possible control over the drive and brakes on smooth surfaces and obstacles, so that he can, for example, lock the rear wheel with the brake for controlled slides or lift the front wheel over obstacles with the throttle. The engine characteristics are the same as in Off-Road mode. The rear wheel ABS, the combination brake function and the DSCS traction control system are deactivated, and the traction control intervenes as little as possible. The FLM and RLM functions are also deactivated, as is the lean angle-dependent control of traction control and ABS, so that these systems always work at a consistent level regardless of the current lean angle. On the Pan America 1250 Special, the semi-active chassis is programmed in Off-Road Plus mode to initially reduce damping during compression in order to more effectively absorb hard impacts, such as bumps, obstacles or landing after jumps.

Note: Off-Road Plus mode can only be selected from Off-Road mode when stationary with the engine running. To do this, the driver must press the Mode button and hold it briefly. The Off-Road Plus mode can be ended at any time by pressing the mode button. This activates the Off-Road mode again, from which the driver can then select any other driving mode as usual using the mode button.

  • Custom Mode: Freely programmable, this mode allows the driver to configure characteristics specifically tailored to their personal preferences or specific events such as race training. Within certain limits, the driver can set the engine characteristics, braking effect and revving speed as desired, as well as the intensity of the C-TCS and C-ABS interventions, and in the Pan America 1250 Special model with semi-active chassis they can also set the damping. On the Pan America 1250 Special with the optional automatic chassis lowering, the driver can set the time delay until lowering begins or deactivate the function. A freely programmable custom mode is available on the Pan America 1250, and up to three different ones on the Pan America 1250 Special (Custom A, Custom B and Custom Off-Road) (see table above).
  • Custom Off-Road and Custom Off-Road Plus* modes: Just like the Off-Road Plus mode, the Custom Off-Road Plus mode of the Pan America 1250 Special is intended for experienced pilots and the most demanding terrain, ideally in conjunction with coarse Harley-Davidsons -All-terrain tires available through the Original Accessories program. In this mode, the drive works with the same performance characteristics that the driver selected for the Custom Off-Road mode and combines them with the remaining settings of the Off-Road Plus mode.

Note: The Custom Off-Road Plus mode can only be selected from Custom Off-Road mode when stationary with the engine running. To do this, the driver must press the mode button and hold it briefly. The Custom Off-Road Plus mode can be ended at any time by pressing the mode button. This activates the Custom Off-Road mode again, from where the driver can then select any other driving mode as usual using the mode button.

Harley-Davidson offers the new adventure touring bike in the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special versions. Both have impressive features, outstanding performance and innovative technology in common.

Pictures of the Pan America models

Harley-Davidson for adventure

“Since the company's beginnings more than a century ago, when many roads were little more than dirt roads, Harley-Davidson has stood for adventure. “That’s why I’m very proud to present the Pan America as the first American adventure touring bike,” said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson.

“The Pan America models exude that go-anywhere spirit that is shared by drivers across the U.S. and around the globe today. They want to experience the world on a motorcycle.” The same spirit of adventure also inspired actor Jason Momoa to represent the spirit of Pan America as a brand ambassador for Harley-Davidson.

The Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models are powered by the new 112 kW (152 hp) Revolution Max 1250, a liquid-cooled V-twin with a displacement of 1,250 cm³ that offers powerful performance up to the highest speeds.

Pan America supplies

In order to reduce the overall weight of the motorcycle (empty weight including operating materials: Pan America 1250: 245 kg, Pan America 1250 Special: 258 kg), the Revolution Max 1250 also serves as a supporting element of the chassis.

The Pan America models are equipped with numerous innovative technologies that ensure a more intense driving experience and greater safety. This includes various selectable driving modes and the electronic assistance system package Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements. The latter adapts the acceleration and deceleration forces to the available tire grip.

The semi-active chassis

The Pan America 1250 Special is equipped with an electronically adjustable semi-active chassis. For the first time, Adaptive Ride Height (ARH) is optionally used on this machine. This revolutionary system automatically lowers the chassis when stationary and raises it again when driving.

Throughout the development process of the new Pan America models, the Harley-Davidson design and engineering teams kept the practicality of the machines in mind. From grab handles to integrated luggage holders to a horizontally positioned headlight that perfectly illuminates an off-road trail, function defines form.

Inspired by the spirit of rugged North American off-road vehicles, the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models visually stand out from other adventure touring motorcycles with a design that reflects their capabilities.

Harley-Davidson authorized dealers offer a complete range of accessories for the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special models, including three robust luggage systems and new motorcycle clothing for men and women, developed by Harley-Davidson in collaboration with renowned European motorcycle clothing specialist REV'IT! has developed.

• Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The tire air pressure monitoring system TPMS shows the tire pressures on the color display and warns the driver if the tire pressure is too low. Both handling and tire life benefit from correct tire pressure.

• Center stand

With the main stand, the motorcycle can be parked vertically and requires less parking space than on the side stand - an advantage in narrow garages. At the same time, the rear wheel is raised, making maintenance and changing tires easier at home and on the go.

• Adjustable brake pedal

The brake pedal can be adjusted in two positions without tools and therefore remains optimally accessible even when driving while standing. This riding technique is essential for off-road driving in order to maintain control of the motorcycle in difficult passages and to be able to better see the terrain ahead.

• Protective bar

The protective bars made of tubular steel protect the radiator from damage and also serve as handles to right the motorcycle after a possible fall.

• Light metal engine guard

The robust engine guard protects the crankcase from impacts.

• Daymaker Signature Adaptive Headlight

The state-of-the-art technology of the adaptive Daymaker headlight is based on the inertial sensor technology of the cornering ABS to determine the lean angle and automatically illuminate the area in front of the vehicle into corners and areas that would otherwise be impossible with a conventional LED headlight in corners not be illuminated. This ensures a safe driving experience on dark roads.

o The system includes three additional LED lighting elements per side above the Daymaker main headlight.

o The additional adaptive light sources come into action one after the other from a lean angle of eight, 15 and 23 degrees.

o Instead of simply switching on the additional headlights, the voltage is continuously increased so that the additional lighting is gradually shown to the driver almost seamlessly.

o The system works with low beam and high beam.

• Handle shells and heated handles

Both provide increased comfort in cold weather. The heated grips work in three stages, which can be selected with a button.

• Steering damper

The steering damper helps prevent the handlebars from hitting when the front wheel becomes light when riding hard off-road.

• Optional ex works: Adaptive Ride Height

Harley-Davidson is the first motorcycle manufacturer to offer automatic chassis lowering.

The new technology is reserved for the Pan America 1250 Special and is available as an option. The technology ensures safe contact with the ground when stationary, without affecting the ground and lean angles while driving. The revolutionary system automatically reduces the seat height when stopping and raises it to the optimal position for driving after starting. The system thus allows the driver to comfortably mount the Pan America 1250 Special while standing and always have safe contact with the ground.

The lowering is 25 to 50 millimeters, depending on the automatically adjusted spring preload on the rear wheel. All features of the semi-active chassis are retained in conjunction with Adaptive Ride Height.

The system does not reduce suspension travel. Lean angles, ground clearance and driving comfort also remain unaffected while driving.

Adaptive Ride Height offers four selectable modes:

  • Auto mode: The system automatically determines the speed of lowering based on the braking force in order to fully lower the chassis and thus the seat height in a timely manner when stopping.
  • Short Delay and Long Delay Modes: In these modes, lowering is delayed to keep the seat height up at low speeds, such as when driving slowly in a parking lot.
  • Locked mode: The automatic lowering of the landing gear is deactivated. This mode is intended, for example, for tall drivers who do not need a lowering position when stationary, or for off-road driving at low speeds.

• Optional ex works:

Cross-spoke wheels for tubeless tires
For customers who like to travel off-road, Harley-Davidson offers cross-spoke wheels as a factory option instead of the standard cast-spoke wheels. The stainless steel spokes of these wheels are guided past the tire bead and into the rim. This special design offers further advantages in off-road operations.

PAN AMERICA 1250 SPECIAL
PAN AMERICA 1250 SPECIAL

o Tubeless tires can be used, which reduces unsprung masses.

o If necessary, defective spokes can be repaired on the go without having to remove the wheel or remove the tire.

o The spoked wheels offer a robust, high-tech design and added off-road flair.

• The machine is available in Vivid Black, Gauntlet Gray Metallic and Deadwood Green paint colors as well as two-tone Baja Orange with Stone Washed White Pearl. Further information about the Pan America 1250 and Pan America 1250 Special can be found at www.harley-davidson.com.

Pan America 1250 Harley Davidson 2021
PAN AMERICA 1250

THE NEW PAN AMERICA 1250

The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 is a robust, powerful and technologically advanced multi-purpose bike. It offers an impressive and intuitive driving experience as well as a confident style.

chassis

A focus in the development of the Pan America models was performance and weight minimization. They dominated the design of the engine as well as the selection of materials and the design of each individual component. The goal was to achieve the best possible power-to-weight ratio. Therefore, the engine acts as a supporting element of the chassis, making a conventional frame obsolete.

Three elements – a robust tubular steel construction for the steering head, a centrally positioned segment and a rear frame – are bolted directly to the drive train. This design reduces the weight of the motorcycle and results in a rigid chassis that contributes to precise handling.

At the rear, a cast light alloy swing arm reduces the unsprung masses. With a wheelbase of 1,580 millimeters, the chassis proves to be ideal for extended tours with a pillion passenger and luggage. At the same time, it impresses with its agile handling off-road.

PAN AMERICA 1250 Revolution engine
Pan America Cut-Away Engine

The light alloy cast spoke wheels (19 inches at the front and 17 inches at the rear) are as stable as they are lightweight and are ideal for driving on asphalt and unpaved surfaces. To meet the requirements of adventure tours, Harley-Davidson worked with Michelin to develop the Scorcher Adventure tire for the Pan America models.

With an aggressive lug pattern, the Michelin Anakee Wild, available as an option through Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories, is the right choice for riders who prefer a tougher off-road style and seek maximum off-road traction.

Brembo brakes

Together with Brembo, Harley-Davidson has designed a new braking system for the Pan America models that guarantees excellent deceleration. The four-piston monoblock brake calipers on the front wheel act on two floating 320-millimeter brake discs.

The system forms a successful synthesis of rigidity, optimal deceleration and low weight. The 280-millimeter brake disc on the rear wheel is acted upon by a Brembo two-piston brake caliper. A new, lightweight brake cylinder and an adjustable hand lever are also used on the front wheel.

Adjustable suspension

At the front end of the Pan America 1250 there is a Showa upside-down fork with a dip tube diameter of 47 millimeters. Spring preload as well as rebound and compression stages of the damping are adjustable. At the rear, a Showa central spring strut with a compensation reservoir is used, the spring preload of which is hydraulically adjustable.

It is controlled via a progressive lever system, which proves to be advantageous both on the road and off-road. There is 191 millimeters of suspension travel available at the front and rear.

Touchscreen display

All instrument and infotainment functions are displayed on a pivoting 6.8-inch TFT (thin-film transistor) touchscreen that excels in sharpness and contrast. The anti-reflective surface makes it easier to read even in poor lighting conditions. The touchscreen function is deactivated while driving.

Touchscreen Pan America 1250 Harley Davidson 2021
Touchscreen Pan America 1250 Harley Davidson 2021

However, the driver can then control various functions of the display using controls on the handlebars. Infotainment functions such as listening to music and making phone calls can be generated and displayed via a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. Map navigation can be done via the free Harley-Davidson app for iOS and Android or via the other apps on a connected smartphone.

Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements

The Pan America 1250 is equipped with Cornering Rider Safety Enhancements, a package of electronic assistance systems that prove helpful in difficult road conditions and dangerous situations. They are controlled electronically and are based on the most modern chassis, braking and drive control technology.

This includes a sensor system (Inertial Measurement Unit, IMU) - a spatial combination of several inertial sensors - which allows the system to intervene even in an inclined position. The Pan America 1250 features cornering-optimized electronic brake force distribution, a cornering anti-lock braking system, cornering traction control, cornering traction control and a vehicle hold assistant.

Driving modes

The driving modes electronically regulate the driving dynamics of the machine and specify the intensity of the electronic interventions. Five modes are available for the basic model, four of which are pre-programmed and one can be individually defined. In addition, the Pan America 1250 Special has two additional modes that can be freely configured by the owner.

Touchscreen Pan America 1250 Harley Davidson 2021
Touchscreen Pan America 1250 Harley Davidson 2021

The pre-programmed driving modes are Road, Sport, Rain, Off-Road and Off-Road Plus. Each driving mode includes a specific combination of power delivery, engine braking, cornering ABS and cornering traction control. The driver uses the mode button on the right handlebar to change the driving mode while driving or while stationary.

Other features of the Pan America 1250

• The lightweight stainless steel exhaust system is designed to meet global noise and emissions standards including Euro V without compromising durability or driving experience. The compact and lightweight catalytic converter is located as close to the engine as possible to keep waste heat away from the driver.

Two silencers, one under the engine and the other on the right at the rear, offer plenty of volume for effective sound insulation with low exhaust back pressure. Performance benefits from this. At the same time, the exhaust system is designed for a high ground clearance in order to avoid damage when driving off-road and not to impair the lean angle.

• The driver's seat can be adjusted to two different seat heights for an optimal seating position. No tools are required to adjust the seat height.

• The windshield can be adjusted with one hand in four positions and over a range of 46 millimeters using a lever next to the touchscreen.

• A cruise control device is available as standard.

• With a capacity of 21.2 liters, the light metal tank ensures an adequate range. An inlet port located far at the front is not covered by standard tank bags, which makes refueling easier because the tank bag does not have to be removed. With its shape, the tank leaves plenty of space for a large airbox underneath.

• The Pan America 1250 features full LED lighting that combines an exciting design with outstanding functionality. Another focus is maximum robustness for off-road operation. When developing the Daymaker Signature LED headlight, the latest photometric analysis methods were used to achieve daylight, but at the same time homogeneous illumination of the road without annoying hotspots.

• The front indicators are well protected under the protective bar.

• The machine is available in Vivid Black and River Rock Gray paint colors.

They are standard equipment on every CVO model. Both when driving straight ahead and when cornering, they adapt the acceleration and deceleration forces to the available tire grip. They are controlled electronically and are based on the most modern chassis, braking and drive control technology. The assistance systems include cornering-optimized electronic brake force distribution (Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking, C-ELB), the cornering anti-lock braking system (Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System, C-ABS), cornering traction control (Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System, C-TCS), and traction control (Drag-Torque Slip Control System, DSCS), the vehicle hold assistant (Vehicle Hold Control, VHC) and the tire pressure monitoring system (Tire Pressure Monitoring System, TPMS).
