Harley-Davidson dealers want a return to a transparent system to better serve customers.
With the pipeline logistics concept, Harley-Davidson once created a modern, innovative system that offered enormous advantages to dealers across Europe. It allowed them to view the importer's inventory in real time and order directly. This enabled retailers to provide their customers with precise and customer-oriented advice. Delivery times could be planned transparently and reliably.
Another advantage: dealers had insight into machines that were in production (“in production”), including the expected completion date, as well as machines that had already been produced and were on the way to the European central warehouse (“on water”) . This transparency made work easier and strengthened customer loyalty.
This innovative logistics system made it possible to network retailers transparently and efficiently.
Challenges and an unexpected system change
The retailers were happy with this concept, but it also presented challenges. A few retailers took advantage of the system to place so-called “hamster orders” when popular models or colors became visible in the pipeline. This gave them unfair advantages over other traders who worked reputably. Nevertheless, the belief remains that these weaknesses could have been remedied with small adjustments without calling the entire concept into question.
Other brands, including Triumph, have even adopted Harley-Davidson's pipeline system - a testament to its innovative strength and efficiency. It was all the more surprising that Harley-Davidson abolished the concept against the will of the dealers and replaced it with the “Managed Supply” system.

Managed Supply: A system with massive weaknesses
The managed supply system meant a significant step backwards for retailers and customers. Instead of influencing the model, color and equipment themselves, they were assigned machines. This allocation often resulted in dealers not purchasing unsuitable machines, while other dealers urgently needed exactly these models - but had no information about their availability.
The result: inventories in the central warehouse grew, and Harley-Davidson's field sales employees were increasingly busy organizing redistributions between dealers. This additional effort caused dissatisfaction on all sides.
Return to more transparency
Harley-Davidson has now recognized that eliminating the pipeline system was a mistake and is now gradually working toward a return to a more transparent system. Dealers can now view the stocks of other dealers again and inquire directly whether a particular machine is being sold. Transport is at your own expense.
What is still missing is complete transparency about the stocks in the central warehouse, machines in production and those that are on the water. This information would be essential for retailers to plan efficiently and offer their customers optimal service. However, this important step has not yet been taken.

The vision is a modern logistics concept for the future
Dealers want to see a return to a system consistent with the original pipeline concept, with full transparency on unsold stock vehicles, production vehicles and vehicles on their way to Europe. This transparency is the key to serving customers as needed and making the dealer network more efficient.
Such a system would be in everyone’s interest – the dealers, the customers and ultimately also the importer. Harley-Davidson has proven in the past that it can be a pioneer in innovation. There is great hope that an improved logistics concept will be implemented at the beginning of 2025 that builds on the strengths of the pipeline system and at the same time eliminates possible weak points. December 3, 2024 – Harley conversion from England wins European Custombike Championship
From November 29th to December 1st, 2024, Bad Salzuflen was once again dominated by the European custom bike scene. More than 21,000 visitors flocked to the East Westphalian city not to miss the largest trade fair for converted motorcycles on the continent. With three exhibition halls, over 23,000 square meters of exhibition space, around 186 international exhibitors and 252 spectacular custom bikes from all over Europe, the CUSTOMBIKE show has once again set standards.
For the first time, a moped build-off was held in Bad Salzuflen. During two days of the trade fair, the Töffliheizer Ostfriesland and the VEB-Design team fought an exciting duel, which the VEB-Design team narrowly won with their “Interflug Schwalbe” after a dramatic finale. They entered the trade fair history books as the first winners of the “German Räng-Däng-Däng-Build-Off”.
European Biker Build-Off: Exciting screwdriver duel
Things got a lot bigger at the European Biker Build-Off. Two custom bikes were set up on the large show stage in front of the audience. The teams from USM Motorcycles from Germany and Vhard Motorworks from Poland fought a close duel. USM impressed with a gold-red racer based on an Indian Sport Scout, while Vhard Motorworks opted for a matt black Harley-Davidson Softail with gold leaf details. In the end, USM won with a narrow majority of 48 votes - the title went to a conversion based on an Indian for the third year in a row.
European Custombike Championship: Victory for England
The European championship title and the prize money of 12,000 euros went to England this year. Vic Jefford and his wife Lin impressed with their “Platinum”, a home-built Harley V2 with impressive technical details such as battery-operated drum brakes in the rear wheel hub. The victory was considered deserved by all participants.

From 2025, the Euro 5+ standard will be mandatory for motorcycles. This further development builds on the Euro 5 requirements introduced in 2020 and brings stricter rules for emissions monitoring and the durability of systems such as catalytic converters. The objective: fewer emissions in the long term and more sustainable use of technology. But how exactly do these changes affect us drivers? What are the requirements and what should you prepare for? Here are the most important facts and background.
Euro 5+ – Why an extension of the existing standard?
The evolution from Euro 4 to Euro 5 and now to Euro 5+
Since 1999, the EU has been pursuing the goal of reducing pollutant emissions from vehicles with the so-called Euro standards. For motorcycles, Euro 4 (from 2016) was a major turning point with significantly stricter limits for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO). Euro 5, introduced in 2020, continued these requirements, with even stricter limits for all types of emissions.
Euro 5+ goes one step further: instead of just limiting emissions, the technology is questioned. Do emissions control systems really last the entire lifespan of a motorcycle? How can you ensure that the limit values are also adhered to in real driving operations?
This is where Euro 5+ comes in – with stricter testing procedures and expanded monitoring of emissions-related systems.

The three central innovations in Euro 5+
1. Onboard Diagnostics II (OBD II)
Motorcycles must be equipped with a more advanced onboard diagnostic system that continuously monitors the function of emissions-related components. This means that problems such as a defective catalytic converter can be identified early. The driver is informed of malfunctions before higher emissions occur.
2. Long-term durability of exhaust gas purification systems
Manufacturers must prove that catalytic converters and other emissions-related components function throughout the entire lifespan of a motorcycle - not just on the test bench, but also in real driving conditions.
3. More realistic noise testing
The limit values for driving noise remain at 77 dB(A), but the test methods are adjusted so that they better reflect real driving situations. The aim is to ensure that motorcycles remain quiet in everyday life - without losing the character of a bike.

• New purchases: Motorcycles that are newly registered from 2025 must meet the Euro 5+ standard. For us drivers, this means more modern technology, but also potentially higher acquisition costs.
• Existing vehicles: Models registered before 2025 are not affected by the new regulations. So you can continue to drive your current motorcycle without restrictions.
Technology and maintenance – what changes
The more advanced exhaust systems and the new OBD II could ensure that maintenance becomes more precise, but also more complex. Repair costs could increase, especially if there are defects in catalytic converters or sensors. Positive: Such problems are detected early by the diagnostic system, which can prevent consequential damage.

A good example of how manufacturers react to emissions regulations is Dr. Jekill & Mr Hyde. They are known for their electronically adjustable exhaust systems, which both meet legal requirements and maintain driving pleasure.
For Euro 5, for example, they have developed an O₂ sensor extender that sits between the body and the end cap of the system and continuously monitors the exhaust gas values. This ensures that regulations are met without losing the typical sound.
It is to be expected that they will again develop solutions for Euro 5+, or have even already developed them. At the European Bike Week, Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde first insights into their new approaches to how modern exhaust systems can meet the stricter requirements without compromising on quality or driving experience. Technologies were presented that not only meet the strict requirements of the Euro 5+ standard, but also simulate real driving operations to ensure maximum reliability and efficiency.

What does the future hold – the outlook for Euro 6
Euro 5+ is not the end of development. There are already discussions about the introduction of Euro 6, which may come in 2028. This could lead to further tightening of emissions and driving noise. There are also topics such as the electrification of motorcycles and safety requirements (e.g. ABS requirement for light motorcycles).
For us drivers the question remains: What is the balance between driving pleasure and regulation? It is clear that the coming years will be exciting – both from a technical perspective and for the market.

New vehicles without Euro 5+
New vehicles without Euro 5+ should be registered in 2024, if at all it will be very time-consuming to get your vehicle registered. The authorized dealers will have to work with daily registrations. There are limited exceptions for manufacturers when carrying inventory into the new year. The rules are different here; if the manufacturer itself carries out a daily registration, according to my information, the vehicle is still considered a new vehicle for the current year. It will also be possible to buy a Sport Glide, for example, in 2025. Contrary to previous information, there will still be Sport Glide and Fat Bob models in 2025.
• The new systems offer advantages, but also bring challenges.
Advanced exhaust technology ensures cleaner values and lower emissions, but could make maintenance more complex.
• The future remains in motion.
Euro 6 and electrification could further change the market. Anyone planning a new motorcycle should keep an eye on developments.

FRANKFURT (November 21, 2024) - With test runs on the racetrack on November 18th, the Harley-Davidson Factory Race Team impressively demonstrated what 2024 Road Glide racing machines are capable of. The race test was carried out in cooperation with the MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports and MotoGP at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló north of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain.
MotoGP is considered the premier class of motorcycle road racing, is one of the most exciting motorsport championships in the world and is held on race tracks that are legitimated by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). Due to the severe storm disaster in the Valencia region, the season finale was moved to Barcelona. Harley-Davidson donated a Road Glide, which will be auctioned off to benefit MotoGP flood relief.

In Barcelona-Catalunya, US Factory Racing Road Glides were seen on a European racetrack for the first time. Kyle Wyman and James Rispoli from the Factory Race Team drove the racing machines around the 4.657 km long course with its 16 corners. In addition to them, former MotoGP and World Superbike pilots Simon Crafar, John Hopkins, Randy Mamola and Marco Melandri also took to the handlebars.

Despite the cloudy and cool weather conditions, Kyle Wyman and James Rispoli achieved top speeds of over 275 km/h on the fast sections of the course. After the factory drivers, Simon Crafar, John Hopkins, Randy Mamola and Marco Melandri took to the Catalunya asphalt and were impressed by the power and performance of the HD Racing excavators.
Crafar: “I just enjoyed this test and tried to figure out the best way to do it. Because it is so different and you have to get used to it. The engine is just great and I love the sound of it. Fantastic – I really want something like this as a street bike.”
Hopkins: “Man, that was so much fun, that was so good! I got a feel for it, the handling is so good and the bike is so wild.”
Mamola: “The torque is incredible. That's why I've loved motorcycles since I was twelve. It's a motorcycle, a damn racing motorcycle. Everything about this machine is beautiful, everything is in the right place. It brakes really well, the gearbox is amazing and it runs smoothly. A great bike.”
Melandri: “I got faster every lap. After I figured out the lean angles, I was fine. The bike is not that heavy and not that big once you move it. And the engine and torque are amazing.”
The King of The Baggers racing series, sponsored by Mission Foods, presents thrilling battles on US race tracks between American, competition-prepared V-twin tourers with panniers and fairing or screen. Kyle Wyman won six of the 18 races last season and was on the podium 14 times.
The HD Factory Race Team's Road Glide racing machines feature standard frames and engine cases. The use of carbon fiber and other lightweight components reduces its weight to around 281 kg. Modified Screamin' Eagle Milwaukee-Eight 131 Performance Crate engines provide propulsion. Optimized chassis components such as the Screamin' Eagle/Öhlins struts with external expansion tanks take care of the suspension and damping. Racing components are also installed in the intake area and the exhaust systems and the machines roll on Dunlop racing tires.

New rules 2025 | This is what Harley riders need to know about motorcycle tires
What the new regulations mean for Harley riders and what you need to pay attention to when choosing tires in the future!
The topic of motorcycle tires is an important point, especially for Harley-Davidson drivers, in order to ensure the best possible driving experience and the necessary safety on the road. However, with the new regulations from 2025, motorcycle owners who want to adapt their tires will have to take a few changes into account. What was previously possible with a simple certificate of non-objection (UBB) will, from next year in Germany, only be permitted through acceptance and registration with the testing center. This article explains what is changing and what motorcyclists should know to ensure compliant tires in the future.
The previous regulations until the end of 2024
Until now, in Germany it was possible to use a clearance certificate (UBB) to drive tires that do not exactly correspond to the entries in the registration certificate. Many Harley riders have used this option, for example to install wider tires or specific tire models that better suit their needs and motorcycle style. This worked as long as the tire manufacturer confirmed through UBB that it was safe to install on the respective type of motorcycle.
The UBB was considered sufficient proof that the tires fitted did not pose any safety risks, even if they did not correspond to the motorcycle manufacturer's specifications. An additional trip to the TÜV or the testing organization was not necessary as long as the UBB was carried. But this flexibility will end with the new regulations from January 2025.
From 2025: Mandatory TÜV inspection for tire deviations
From January 1, 2025, it will no longer be possible to drive simply by carrying a clearance certificate if the tires differ from the entries in the vehicle documents. The previous regulation is being replaced by a stricter requirement: All tires that do not exactly correspond to the registered specifications must now be approved and registered by an official testing organization such as TÜV or DEKRA.
This step is mandatory if the tires differ from the original in size, tread depth or other technical details. Simply submitting a UBB is no longer sufficient in these cases. The change is intended to ensure uniform regulation and ensure that all tires meet the requirements for safety and stability in road traffic.
Consequences for Harley-Davidson drivers
For drivers of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, this means that changes to the tires could become more complicated from 2025. If you want to convert to wider or optically different tires, you will have to expect additional effort and costs in the future. Testing at TÜV or DEKRA is not only time-consuming, but can also involve fees that vary depending on the testing center and the extent of the adjustments.
This limits the previous flexibility for personalized conversions to Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This new regulation represents a challenge, especially for bikers who like to customize their machines according to their own ideas. It is therefore recommended to make appointments with the testing center early in order to avoid possible waiting times or bottlenecks - especially at the beginning of the motorcycle season, when test appointments are in demand.
Why this regulation was changed
The reason for the new regulation is road safety. The UBB has long been a tool that was specifically tailored to the needs of motorcyclists who do not always want or cannot rely on standard tires. But this practice has not always been considered sufficiently safe by authorities. Official acceptance by a testing organization now ensures that all tires actually meet the required safety standards and possible risks are minimized.
From the perspective of the authorities and testing organizations, tire adjustments are a safety-relevant point that should be monitored more closely, especially on heavy machines such as Harley-Davidson models.
