Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited 2020 driving report

The Harley-Davidson Tourer with the legendary Batwing fairing combines tradition with modern technology in the 2020 model year.

Even if someone without any great motorcycle ambitions is standing in front of the Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited , it usually only takes one try to guess that a Harley-Davidson is standing in front of them.

Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited 2020
Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited 2020

The Batwing fairing, designed by Willie G. in 1969, is timeless and definitely a trademark of the company. It has been modified a little over the years, even the wind tunnel (Splitstream Vent), which has been tried and tested since 2014, could not take away its recognition. In 2020, Harley-Davidson more on technical safety features that do their work in secret.

The seating position is the difference between the Road Glide Limited and the Ultra Limited

I last drove the Road Glide Limited 2020 , the question always arises as to which one is better. There's no way to answer the question because they both drive great. You really notice the difference when you switch from one to the other. It is the seating position that makes them so different, in addition to the design.

While you sit a little more reclined Road Glide Limited Ultra Limited the driver to have an upright sitting position; you sit much closer to the command center than on the elongated Road Glide upper-class tourer.

RDRS is the name of the new Harley-Davidson technology package

In the 2020 model year, the Touring models were equipped with a tire air pressure monitoring system and the Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS). This technology package of assistance systems adapts the acceleration and deceleration forces to the available tire grip both when driving straight ahead and when cornering. The assistance systems are controlled electronically and are based on the most modern chassis, braking and drive control technology.

In rain, gravel or sand on the road, traction control is your bodyguard

They prove to be very helpful in difficult road conditions and in dangerous situations. The traction control in particular is a real safety gain in difficult road conditions.

I tested the driving characteristics on a road with gravel in standard mode. At times it spins briefly, but it really gives a very good feeling of safety. We must not forget that the engine provides 163 Nm of torque, they want to work forward.

The traction control ensures safe driving behavior on gravel.

Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited 2020 driving report 1

In any case, this technology works very well, it's very reassuring to have it on board, especially when you're traveling with it on unknown routes, because that's what the tourer was built for. The big tours are her discipline, like I did with my friend Hermann in September. At first we didn't want to drive at all and then suddenly our fingers itched. We left everything behind and the next morning the road was ours. You can read the report from our tour to Lake Faak here .

The suitcases offer plenty of storage space

And with stories like this, the generous amount of space comes into play; I was particularly impressed by the large suitcase. I always get way too much, but as we all know, “having is better than needing” !

Most of the time I travel without a passenger, but the trend is increasingly towards having my partner go with me. More and more often on your own Harley.

Executive chair for the CoPilot

The Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited offers a lot for the passenger. An extremely large armchair and footboards for the feet, which is often underestimated, but makes riding very comfortable for the passenger, especially on long tours.

Ultra Limited 2020 passenger seat and running board
Ultra Limited 2020 passenger seat and running board

The heated seat can be ordered through the Harley-Davidson accessories range. This heats the driver and also the front passenger, adjustable in two levels. Especially when the weather is bad on a long tour, you can appreciate this luxury. I once missed the seat heating on a tour in Norway when it got significantly wetter and colder at the polar border. That's another thing - anyone who drives a lot and has already enjoyed the comfort of heated seats will order them again and again.

The communication technology

Harley-Davidson calls it an infotainment system and unfortunately the Harley-Davidson website doesn't really show how extensive this system really is. The statistics show that it is mainly older people who have both feet in life who are on the big tourers. The majority of them will have to spend a little more time studying the instructions to first check what the infotainment system can do.

Apple Carplay, head set and the Whim module

Into the Boom! Box GTS has introduced Apple Carplay. Apple Car Play is activated via an additional Whim module, you should order this directly when ordering, it could be a must-have, especially for younger people, if you want to sell it to them again.

Apple Carplay links the Carplay apps from the iPhone with the Boom! Box, a separate menu opens and you can open your music, maps, WhatsApp or other applications that are activated by Apple for Apple Carplay. The Calimoto , for example, is software for motorcyclists that is used to record the tour you have ridden, or you can follow recommended tours from other bikers in the community. At the time of my test, the software had not yet been activated, but Calimoto informed me that it should be ready soon.

Harley-Davidson with Apple Carplay
Apple Carplay

It's just an example, streaming services like Deezer can also use the Boom! Feed the box with music, or you can listen to a podcast while driving. Basically, the Boom! Box GTS also does a lot of things without Apple Carplay if you only connect the iPhone via USB and Lightning, but the connectivity in combination with the iPhone is great.

I was able to identify one disadvantage in my test: Apple specifies that Apple Carplay only works in combination with the headset. If this is not activated, Carplay will not start. In addition, the engine must be running before you connect the cell phone so that Apple Carplay connects to the iPhone. It depends on the respective software version, there are versions where a running engine was not necessary, but usually it is not possible.

Current firmware software for the Boom! Box is available for download

You can find the latest software for the respective Boom! Harley-Davidson using the following link the box yourself and install it according to the instructions, or you can go to your authorized dealer. It is recommended to always be up to date.

Boom! Box GTS navigation software update for download

Harley-Davidson recommends updating the Map's road maps annually; this is easily possible. At the following link, Harley-Davidson provides a software tool for Windows and Mac PCs with which the current map can be downloaded.

Riding the Ultra Limited in fog
In the evening the fog on the North Sea surprised us

For the extreme tourers among us, it is particularly interesting that you can swap out the navigation map software if you want to change continents and of course it is possible to restore the original map when you get home. If you have some technical sense, Harley-Davidson offers the opportunity to do it yourself.

The Bluetooth helmet head set combination is optimal

As standard, the tourers are designed for the conventional headset version with the cable; the driver and passenger have the option of connecting to the vehicle via a plug. This makes it possible for the driver and passenger to establish communication via a headset, or listen to music or make phone calls. The advantage of the wired system is that you don't have to remember to charge any batteries and the voice connection is first-class.

Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited plug for the headset
Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited socket for the headset

Now the question comes, who needs this? Actually, it's enough to own a Harley and let the wind blow around your nose. Enjoy nature and comfortably get closer to your goal. An important argument, however, is the navigation and yes, I occasionally listen to music on long journeys, especially on the motorway. You get a call from home asking if everything is okay on the tour. It's all easy, no additional devices that need to be charged and overall it's a very good and usable facility.

It is simply much more pleasant to have a gentle voice in your ear guiding you through a foreign city when you want to reach your destination for the day somewhere in the world.

Voice control is a contemporary feature

You also need a headset to use voice control. Anyone who knows Siri or Alexa will be surprised at how well it works.

Harley-Davidson's on-board voice control has its own vocabulary to be addressed. It still works very well if you have the commands. And who is surprised, especially when Apple Carplay is activated, Siri takes the commands from the captain as usual.

The Audio N02 Full-Face Bluetooth Helmet from Harley-Davidson

I myself have two of the Audio N02 full-face helmets, which are available in different color versions. You can find a report on the Bluetooth helmets from Harley-Davidson under the link on the Harley site.

The helmet costs around €620, which doesn't sound cheap at first, but now go ahead and buy a headset and things will look different again. The Harley helmet is made of one system and has stereo sound. A very important aspect is that the headset is permanently installed, there are no cables hanging around and you can't see anything except the buttons, and it's easy to use.

Only the visor on my helmet closes too easily, I haven't figured out where to adjust it yet. I had the feeling that it was small because I bought it a size larger than my Harley jet helmet that I usually wear when traveling.

I always take it with me on big tours. If it's really hot and I'm planning a trip somewhere where I want the full feeling, I go with the half shell. You have the suitcase, you don't need to think too much about it.

It's easy to explain why I own two of these helmets. I often take my daughter with me when we go for our rides in the evening. She connects her helmet to her cell phone and listens to her own music, and since both helmets are connected via Bluetooth, we can also chat.

The Whim module provides an additional menu item in the settings

As mentioned above, in order to connect the Ultra Limited to the helmet set, you need the Bluetooth Whim module, which creates the Bom! Box an additional setting option to configure both helmets. The helmets are registered in the Harley system via the menu and you have access to all the various setting options.

The battery power of the integrated headset

To this day I have not regretted the decision, especially for long distances, it is simply more pleasant and safer with a full face helmet. The battery lasts me at least 6 hours in operation, after which I have 25% battery power, but I haven't drained it in a day.

Just don't forget to charge it again. If you want to use a battery pack, that's no problem, but the headset switches off during the charging process, at least that was the case for me. But that doesn't mean that it couldn't change again at some point, that's up to the software, which could make the world look different again through an update.

The nose spoiler in the helmet, small spoiler has a big impact

Apart from the easily adjustable visor, I am very satisfied with the helmet; it has an inner anti-fog film for the visor that can be inserted. Good and noticeable ventilation, which is controlled via two sliders.

Helmet boom! Audio N02 Full Face - 98208-20EX
Spoiler on the helmet boom! Audio N02 Full Face

The helmet has a small spoiler in front of the nose, which is ingenious, but also a reason why you should always try the helmet on before buying so that it fits correctly. The inner lining is easily removable and washable. The visor is also quickly replaced with a tinted one.

If you look at everything together now, you will inevitably see that a 2020 Harley-Davidson is absolutely state-of-the-art. The company has made tremendous improvements in the area of safety features and infotainment systems. I didn't expect that it would work so well overall. I even liked the hill start assistant, which I've used everywhere, but I've never missed it before.

First-class touring properties

Anyone who rides a Harley-Davidson from the large touring class for the first time will first have respect for the stated 416 kg riding weight. But as soon as the boots have found their place on the running boards, you will be amazed at how easy it is to drive.

The most important thing is to drive, drive and drive again!

I can only recommend to anyone who is a little unsure that you have to put kilometers on it so that you can find the situations where you have to be careful and develop a feeling for handling. I can say from my experience that it's always the simplest stupid situations, smeared floors at the gas station, or being hit too hard when maneuvering. If it were to tip over in such a case, it is pretty well protected by the standard crash bars.

You can take them through the curves in a sporty way, they can do that well. The high-torque 114 cui engine has enough reserves to pull powerfully out of corners. At 100 km/h the engine turns at around 2000 rpm in sixth gear, which is a totally relaxed cruise. It gets out of this speed range well, especially at the bottom it has more power than the more agile 107 engine. If you want to move quickly, you quickly shift down a gear.

during loading from the car train on the island of Sylt
Waiting for the car train from the island of Sylt

I traveled around 10,000 kilometers with the Ultra Limited in the summer, which is how the photos in the gallery came about, which I took myself as usual. The island of Sylt, Großglockner High Alpine Road, Faaker See and Fehmarn were some of my destinations.

The LED Daymaker of the Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited
The LED Daymaker of the Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited

The light of the Ultra Limited

The Limited Ultra has a Daymaker LED headlight and two LED additional fog lights installed. During my journeys, I switched on the fog lights when visibility was poor. I found that the light output was very high and glare-free, otherwise oncoming traffic would have flashed their headlights.

When I drove from the island of Sylt late in the evening, I was of course completely in the fog, yes and what can I say, I was grateful not only to have heated grips, but also to have the powerful fog lights, otherwise I would have The North Sea soup had a bad hand. The LED Daymaker has a special lighting concept; there is no usual light cone to be seen, but rather a thick light bar supported by two ellipses. It takes some getting used to, but it works.

The innovations in the 2020 model

Harley-Davidson has equipped the 2020 Ultra Limited model series with numerous new features. At the forefront is the new RDRS (Reflex Defensive Rider Systems),

This technology package of assistance systems adapts the acceleration and deceleration forces to the available tire grip both when driving straight ahead and when cornering.

The assistance systems are controlled electronically and are based on the most modern chassis, braking and drive control technology. They prove to be helpful in difficult road conditions and in dangerous situations.

The ABS and the electronic brake force distribution were already standard in the touring models, but thanks to the new RDRS system, the cornering anti-lock braking system (C-ABS), the cornering-optimized electronic brake force distribution (C-ELB), the traction control (TCS) are now also available. , cornering traction control (C-TCS), traction control system (DSCS), vehicle hold assistant (VHC) and tire air pressure monitoring system (TPMS) on board.

From model year 2020, the new infotainment system Boom! Box GTS installed in the Ultra Limited with a 16.5 cm color touchscreen. There is also a high-quality audio component, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, navigation system, intercom and control joysticks on the handlebar controls for information and entertainment on board.

available
for the Ultra Limited in 2020 The numerous dark surfaces ensure a stylish and subtle look. Based on the “Chrome Option” and the “Black Option”, the customer can choose between six different paint colors or color combinations. What's also new is that the Ultra Limited is now equipped with larger 18-inch wheels at the front and rear.

Prices and further information on the Harley-Davidson

The conclusion

The price in Vivid Black starts at €29,825 plus delivery costs and a set-up fee of €546. It is therefore not much more expensive than the sportier-looking special models.

It offers a lot more, but is a few kilos heavier. The more you travel with it, the sooner the kilos feel like it disappears, it's really fun and a real tourer. Great light and lots of storage space. Ideal for traveling with your partner and absolutely up to date when it comes to technology.

The engine is powerful and very economical, an ideal motorway travel speed is around 120km/h to 140km/h, so I drove over 800 kilometers in one day without any problems and without breaking the tires. Even inexperienced riders will be able to drive long distances on the Ultra Limited.

An ideal companion to enjoy nature and freedom. The new features make driving even safer and are a real benefit.

DRIVING REPORT – HARLEY-DAVIDSON ROAD GLIDE LIMITED 2020

The Harley-Davidson upper class tourer should show its strengths and weaknesses in the Harleysite test!

Chasing the setting sun on it, these are the unforgettable moments that you can experience Road Gilde Limited 2020 (FLTRK)

Thanks to its fairing that is firmly mounted on the frame, you experience a very special driving experience, which is actually the biggest difference to the Ultra Limited 2020 with the traditional Bat Wing fairing.

Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited 2020
Road Glide Limited and Ultra Limited 2020

The Road Glide Limited in the “Chrome Option” or “Black Option” design package. In the “Chrome Option” package, the wheels and numerous add-on parts are chrome-plated, while the “Black Option” package stands for the black design.

2020 Road Glide Limited
2020 Road Glide Limited

The Tahitian Teal paint is a strikingly beautiful color

The Road Glide Limited that I'm riding here has to prove itself in a wide variety of conditions. A lot of country roads and long motorway stages are on the program, where everything is demanded of the Road Glide Limited.

Schönberger Strand Museum Station 2020 Road Glide Limited
Schönberger Strand Museum Station 2020 Road Glide Limited

When I drive on the motorway, the tachometer stays in the upper range for a little longer and you will find out in this report whether a Harley can handle that.

Whether a Harley-Davidson is actually intended for this is another matter, because things are usually really quiet and relaxed on them.

The 114cui engine is required on long motorway tours, or so you think. But let's take it easy for a moment, I've been out and about at home on the Baltic Sea, always just short day trips through Holstein Switzerland and along the sea.

2020 Road Glide Limited
2020 Road Glide Limited

We have fantastic routes here and the sunsets in August in particular are indescribably beautiful. If you can drive along the coast on a long straight with the sun setting on the horizon in front of you, then you're in the right movie!

When day turns into night and the Daymaker turns night into day!

When day turns into night, the Daymaker LED reflector headlights replace sunlight. These dual headlights are among the best light makers you can find installed on a motorcycle.

If you now compare it to the Ultra Limited or even Heritage Softail , these two models only reach their full potential when you switch on the standard fog lamps. To their credit, they are fairly glare-free, but they shouldn't be on by default like the Road Glide's dual headlights.

In the photo is the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic in the mountains of Picos de Europa National Park

The fairing is always an issue with the Road Glide; it is firmly installed on the frame and gives the machine more torsional rigidity. In addition, a stable handlebar that is directed slightly backwards gives the driver a relaxed yet sporty seating position.

The Road Glide Limited can also be sporty

You shouldn't think so, but a Road Glide Limited can certainly be sporty. I have had this experience very often. Despite its total weight of approx. 423 kg, it can be pushed through the curves with great vigor. The 114cui engine has enough torque to give it the power it needs to pull out of the curve powerfully.

2020 Road Glide Limited

The traction control

The new complex RDRS system is a real asset. All-weather drivers will enjoy the new traction control. In normal mode it switches on with a slight delay and in rain mode it regulates the slip so perfectly that the driver does not notice the active traction control being adjusted.

Traction control

The traction control switch is located in the left dashboard.

Switch Street Glide Special 2020 0226

The Road Glide stays on track and there is no noticeable loss of performance. Even on the highway at higher speeds, the Road Glide Limited does not lose any performance with active TC. I wouldn't have expected the traction control to work so perfectly.

The cockpit of the Road Glide Limited 2020
The cockpit of the Road Glide Limited 2020

It was about time that a little helper like this was installed, because the engines are becoming more and more powerful and should be able to transfer their power to the asphalt without slipping if possible.

The mountain hold assistant

I never missed this feature before, but now that it's installed I've used it countless times. It's rare that you're actually standing on the mountain when you're about to start your journey again; there are slightly sloping parking lots and driveways where I've often needed it to quickly pull up my gloves again or to safely stow my cell phone. You pull the brake lever briefly to brake temporarily. You will experience it yourself once you have it in practice.

The comfort for the passenger!

Well, the looks from the passengers on other motorcycles that don't have this level of comfort are unique. It's pure luxury for the passenger, even the headset can be configured explicitly for the passenger. Depending on how you are connected, you can either connect via Bluetooth or cable.

Passenger seat Road Glide Limited
Passenger seat Road Glide Limited

An additional switch below the right backrest controls the volume separately. It's really very comfortable and the folding running boards for the passenger provide more support when braking, for example, than if they were just footrests.

Front passenger controls Road Glide Limited 2020
Front passenger controls Road Glide Limited 2020

However, you have to be careful when loading, the Road Glide Limited has a permissible total weight of 617 kg and a payload of 194 kg. With a storage space of 132 L, you could quickly become a bit cocky when packing.

Mdag Messebau - We rock it!

A luggage rack is mounted as standard on the Tour-Pak, which can accommodate another 4.5 kilos. It's really a problem. Anyone who has ever owned such a large Harley and was used to this storage space will never be able to cope with less again.

Running board passenger Road Glide Limited 2020
Running board passenger Road Glide Limited 2020

And the other way around, you will rediscover every day how flexible you have suddenly become when you can stow all your motorcycle clothing in the Road Glide Limited before an external appointment and it is not really obvious that you have arrived on the Harley.

After these experiences you will realize how flexible you are and that there are suddenly many more opportunities for motorcycling than you may have experienced before.

Continuously variable grip and seat heating

When it's cold and wet, the heated grips are always welcome; unlike the heated seats, they don't have to be ordered separately. The seat heating can be adjusted to two levels, which is very pleasant in wet and cold conditions. Those who travel anywhere in the world on their Harley will appreciate these two pleasant heaters. With this extra warmth, you can last a little longer than expected in bad weather conditions.

The Boom! Box GTS infotainment system

That's really great, the system's response speed has noticeably improved compared to its predecessor. I would like to say that I also got along quite well with the previous infotainment system. Navigation has always taken me well through many countries. However, the new GTS version has become noticeably better and smoother.

Navigating the Road Glide Limited 2020
Navigating the Road Glide Limited 2020

Once you have entered your destination, navigation will help you find the right route; if there is a traffic jam, it will redirect you if necessary. The entire system can be expanded very flexibly. There is an additional Bluetooth Whim module, for the Bluetooth headset and even Apple Car Play, which can be ordered separately as an extension in combination with the Bluetooth Whim in the module, which is then required because of the required headset. Google Auto won't be available for the Boom! Box GTS expected.

What was noticed less positively.

What really bothers me is that the air ducts next to the headlights can no longer be closed. I can only recommend that every all-weather driver order this extra from the dealer. When the sun is shining, it's no question that you'll be happy to take any breeze with you, but the Road Glide Limited is otherwise a tourer that can be used to protect you even in the most adverse weather conditions.

His strength is actually being able to travel in wind and weather. And anyone who has ever sought shelter behind the paneling when it is 5 degrees cold will understand how valuable the flaps are.

Sunset at the Baltic Sea Road Glide Limited 2020
Sunset at the Baltic Sea Road Glide Limited 2020

And basically the fairing and wind protection is very good. However, it is only really good when the air duct flaps can be closed. As soon as it gets cold, the cold air presses hard on the upper body. So be sure to order it too.

As part of the cost-cutting measures, the standard second FOB (key) was eliminated in 2020, which is perhaps even bearable; most people have it lying around in the drawer anyway and when you took it out, the battery was usually empty.

The rocker switch has been eliminated. I have almost never used them when changing gears, but that doesn't mean anything, although this saving measure could be quickly remedied at your trusted dealer if you don't want to do without it.

What happens next with HD-Connect remains to be seen. The only important thing is to provide the correct information to the insurance company, otherwise they will assume that the Road Glide Limited is GPS monitored as standard.

The conclusion

For me the Road Glide Limited is one of the best tourers ever, it can be sporty, it is very comfortable and all the storage space can be addictive.

I don't really know how many tens of thousands of kilometers I've driven on a Road Glide (Special, Limited and CVO) in the last four years. I don't want to miss a single kilometer of it because it has always been a very reliable companion for me and has taken me to various European countries.

With the new features it has now become even safer, its design is a bit divisive, but technically and in terms of driving behavior it is always at the forefront!

The features of the Road Glide Limited 2020

The standard equipment includes the Daymaker LED double reflector headlight, the Boom! Box GTS infotainment system with 6.5-inch color touchscreen, voice recognition, navigation system, intercom, high-quality audio section with 25 watts per channel, front and rear speakers and control joysticks on the handlebar controls. The comfortable seat, running boards for driver and passenger, six-stage heated handlebar grips and the Cruise Control speed control system and a self-activating immobilizer promise a high level of comfort.

the price for the Road Glide Limited 2020 starts at €28,455 (as of September 2020),

TEST – HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET GLIDE SPECIAL 2020

Driving report on the new Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special model year 2020 in the color Performance Orange.

The Harley-Davidson Street Glide is undisputedly the most popular Harley-Davidson tourer in bagger style. Its design is unmistakable and the sporty tourer is particularly admired by non-motorcyclists and is quickly identified as a Harley-Davidson.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020 and the boom! Audio Full-Face Helmet 2020 (98208-20EX RRP €621)

As a result, the corresponding words are often used, especially at the gas station: “That’s a nice heavy machine” and in fact it is a really heavy machine ready to drive at 375kg. But who else but Harley-Davidson is predestined for a heavy machine! However, it is only really heavy as long as it doesn't roll. As soon as the built-in Slicer II cast light alloy wheels start moving, the weight literally disappears. Nice straight-line stability and overall you feel more rigidity in the frame than with some models from the 2015 model year.

I really liked the chassis. Before you make your own judgment, you should make sure which setting is on the adjustable damper unit. This basically applies to all models from the Softail series onwards, because they are more or less fast adjustable.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

I set the damper on the Street Glide Special to strength 10. With over 100 kilos of dead weight, this is the perfect driving setting for me. Even when I had attached two heavy wheels to the additional, removable luggage rack with sissy bar for a tour, the ride was very comfortable.

If you don't want to try things out yourself to find your ideal setting, you won't go wrong with strength 10. At high speeds on the highway with luggage, it stayed true to the road and it also remained stable in long curves.

She could do more if you let her

With its 114cui (1,868 cc) and 89 hp, it would reach its limits somewhere beyond 200 km/h, but Harley-Davidson has limited it to around 180 km/h. The Americans always ask themselves whether we race in Germany, because in terms of tuning and engine customization we are always very far ahead.

Experiences about the new features of the Street Glide Special 2020

The traction control

My highlight is the traction control, which is activated automatically after each start cycle. In normal mode, it regulates the propulsion on loose surfaces or wet roads. When driving in the rain, I switch directly to rain mode, then the blue rain cloud lights up in the speedometer display.

Rain traction control

The blue rain cloud indicates that the traction control is active.

In normal driving mode, the rear wheel spins slightly when slipping and the drive is limited, especially on unpredictable bitumen strips, it can save you, I've experienced it myself.

The system intervention in rain mode to prevent slipping when driving in rain is inconspicuous and hardly noticeable, but very effective.

This makes driving much safer and you no longer have the feeling of sitting on raw eggs when cornering on wet roads. By pressing the traction control switch for one minute it is possible to switch off the traction control. The system is reactivated during a new start in the last active traction control mode.

Traction control switch

The system reactivates with each start cycle in the last active traction control mode. The new switch can be seen in the photo above left. The same symbol (TC) lights up orange on the speedometer display when you intervene in driving mode.

TEST - HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET GLIDE SPECIAL 2020 31

The hill start assistant (VHC)

The hill start assistant comes in a close second place, although I don't really think the name is appropriate. Because you can use it anywhere, when loading over a ramp, or simply put, anywhere that is not horizontal. I never thought I would ever need something like that, but when you're driving, situations arise by themselves, you just never thought about it before.

Brake hold assistant

The hill start aid uses brake pressure to prevent the motorcycle from rolling back on an incline.

Brake hold assistant Street Glide Special

You're just about to drive off and you've forgotten your gloves, up until now you've always had to stop on slight slopes, now you briefly pull the handbrake lever and it stops, the same goes for the foot brake, a firm tap on the brake and nothing rolls anymore.

But you can drive off again without further ado, the brakes release automatically. It deactivates itself after five minutes at the latest, or when you switch off the engine. It's really just a little helper that I've already used in countless situations and wouldn't want to be without today.

Further electronic systems of the 2020 models at a glance

The new extract electronic RDRS systems from Harley-Davidson
The new electronic RDRS systems from Harley-Davidson

In 2020, driver assistance systems will clearly be in the foreground. With ever more powerful engines, Harley-Davidson has to find a connection somewhere between the old hand and the biker who only rides on the weekend. Safety was at the top of the to-do list, which they have now completed quite well.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

In addition to the features already listed above, the Brembo brakes have electronic brake force distribution, which optimally doses the braking forces to the front and rear wheels in every driving situation from a speed of 40 km/h. This works really well, which is probably the case with a heavily packed touring vehicle, possibly with a pillion passenger! The brake system leaves nothing to be desired and is absolutely state-of-the-art with today's available technology.

HD Connect

Unfortunately, I wasn't able HD Connect , it has something to do with data protection regulations, so I wasn't allowed to activate the APP during my test drive. Unfortunately, that all became difficult today.

APPLE CARPLAY

APPLE CARPLAY has now entered the Boom! Box GTS infotainment system was introduced. GOOGLE AUTO will follow in the next few months or in 2021.

It's really cool to be able to use some APPS from the iPhone directly, not all APPS from the connected iPhone can be run via CarPlay. Apple checks the programs in advance and if all requirements are met, it will be included in the CarPlay section and the respective program will appear on the Boom! BOX GTS if the APP is installed in the iPhone.

Apple Carplay - Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special Boom! Box GTS 2020
Apple Carplay – Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special Boom! Box GTS 2020

Apple Carplay only works in conjunction with Bluetooth

Calimoto, for example, is one such case. Apple still testing the program, but soon the successful start-up company with its APP for motorcyclists will also be available in Apple CarPlay and you could easily record your most beautiful tours and share them with others.

However, Apple CarPlay only works in conjunction with a Bluetooth headset, which is a security-related requirement from Apple. If the headset's battery is empty, Apple CarPlay switches off. This could be counteracted with a battery pack or with the Harley's USB power supply to recharge the Bluetooth unit.

However, the helmet's battery lasted over 6 hours with full activity. On a Road Glide Limited, for example, there is still a cable connection for the analog headset and no Bluetooth; you have to order the module separately.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

When you place your order, you need to know exactly what you want to order.

Apple Carplay is an accessory that must be ordered separately. With the Road Glide Limited the Bluetooth radio module be ordered. If you want to operate your helmet directly with it, you should do so. Otherwise it doesn't really work, there is Bluetooth, but not specifically for pairing the Boom! Box GTS and the headset. And of course you need the headset itself, from Harley-Davidson there is the Boom! Audio 30K headset, or the helmet version I prefer. The CVO models already have one, so the math starts again. If you're interested in a special and a CVO, you should do the math, the CVO has a lot of added value included.

Boom! Audio full face helmet

The system connects the rider with the pillion passenger or – in a closed mesh group – with up to 16 other users up to two kilometers away.

Boom! Audio Full-Face Helmet, or the Boom! Audio 30K headset

Now comes the boom! Audio Full-Face Helmet (98208-20EX, RRP: 621 euros) comes into play, in contrast to the Boom! Audio 30K headset for around €428, everything is already built into the helmet, the buttons are fixed, no microphone hanging around and with a difference of around €200, it is certainly a good decision to go straight to the helmet.

Harley-Davidson helmets 2020

On long tours only the full-face helmet

There is another version of the helmet, the full face helmet is something sensible, I also like riding with the half shell, but I don't want to be without it, especially on long tours and in the rain. The helmet has anti-fog protection and has a tab on the nose and chin, so hardly any wind gets past them, even in bad weather a simple scarf is enough.

On the road with my buddy Hermann.

Especially on long journeys, the entire communication in the network is noticeable, no more fiddling, it is very clear and can be controlled blindly via the controls.

You should have read the manual

You really have to get to grips with the new technology, the Bluetooth devices can also be paired for communication with the passenger or others in a MESH group. It's really crazy what can be done these days, like making a phone call while driving or giving Siri any commands.

The question of questions is, do you need all of this?

I'll put it this way: if you just want to go to the ice cream parlor and don't plan any tours, you don't need any of that, the BOOM! BOX GTS. What the infotainment system alone can do without the Apple Carplay module is already too much for some. But if you are technically savvy and want to prepare your tours on your PC, you can do this either with the HD-Connect APP and the Ride Planner from Harley-Davidson , or with Google or Apple Maps and, of course, in the future with Calimoto via Apple CarPlay.

You don't know how the future will develop; sometimes it's better to have something than to need it .

It's hard to give a recommendation, you shouldn't allow yourself to be distracted too much while driving, it's no different than driving a car. If you're more of a mono type, you should concentrate on driving.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide 2020

It's all a question of attitude

However, once everything is set up and configured correctly, things start to get better. Navigation in particular can be very useful as long as you use it correctly. It is an advantage to deal with it in order to at least partially exploit it.

TIP: When practicing, always set the ON/OFF switch to the far left to ACC to save power.

Cockpit of the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
The tidy cockpit of the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

I stumbled a few times myself when suddenly all the streets in the country were no longer shown to me, but again that's up to the operator. If you don't zoom in properly, something like this happens. If you do it right, every little dead end will be displayed.

The 114cui engine and the sound

The 114cui engine has become even livelier, you can't tell from the technical data, but the 2020 114cui engine pulls noticeably better and more evenly than the 2019 one. This slight change was confirmed to me by Harley-Davidson, the mapping was done adjusted a bit and the exhaust gas flow from the exhaust was also optimized, which resulted in a duller sound.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

Personally, these days I'm more in favor of spending money on useful accessories, such as the removable luggage rack with sissy bar.

SISSY BAR WITH LUGGAGE RACK

A removable luggage rack with sissy bar

You can fit a lot into your suitcase, but it's ideal for tying down a roll or bags for a big tour. The luggage rack comes with these magnetic caps that you can put on the holder to make it look nicer if you don't want the luggage rack to be mounted.

Cover caps

The magnetic caps cover the chrome-colored suspension of the luggage rack

What also seems to be good are the suitcase-sized bags, just pull them out and away, which is a good long-term solution.

Inside pockets for suitcases

The inside pockets for the suitcases are very practical, everything can be stowed away quickly, a very good travel companion.

The longer caps are apparently difficult to get, I have now seen two solutions where you paint the chrome black or simply cover it with black insulating tape, both are possible, of course it is nicer with paint.

The magnetic caps cover the chrome-colored suspension of the luggage rack
The suspension of the additional luggage rack (painted)

The wind and the disguise

I originally wanted to mount the slightly higher windscreen before I set off on the Street Glide Special. But it wasn't at hand and to my surprise I didn't have any turbulence on my helmet.

The air duct

The air duct effectively creates a wall of air in front of the driver by changing the flow.

Visually, only the additional flap and the switch have been omitted. The airflow tapers a little and at a certain speed it creates a real wall in front of you. The airflow may have been adjusted slightly in the 2020 model, I don't have any further information about that at the moment. In any case, the narrow window was completely ok for me, but everyone has to find out for yourself.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

The color performance orange

This model is in the color Performance Orange, the color really pops. Of course, she stands out in a row of black Harleys. Harley really succeeded in the color combination with the matt black; I only received positive feedback about it.

The conclusion to the Street Glide Special

The conclusion to the Street Glide Special 2020 is very good. First of all, the two features traction control and brake hold assistant, the surprise is the new sound from the exhaust. At the beginning I was a little overwhelmed by the entire combination of Boom! Box GTS, Apple Carplay and the Bluetooth helmet.

2023 House Of Thunder Harley-Davidson Lübeck

After a few thousand kilometers of driving and my tour through the Westerwald, I had the situation under control and was prepared for everything. It works, it's possible to pair them with each other, you just have to follow the included instructions meticulously. That's very clear, in addition to driving, you have a little more to do before driving, welcome to the 21st century! Nowadays, adolescent customers expect such features from a motorcycle.

What I do not like

What I didn't particularly like is the light design and the front indicators. Sure, Harley-Davidson would like to be the distance from the CVO , but nobody wants light bulbs anymore, the light is ok, but there's no comparison to the Road Glide with the reflector LED lamps . That would be another reason to take another look at the accessories catalog. I would like to see illuminated switches, it's only a small thing, but a slight backlighting of the symbols would be useful, especially when driving at night.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special 2020

Harley-Davidson doesn't really have a way to do this online yet, so that you can configure your bike at home on the screen and then order it from the dealer with a code, but who knows, it will come at some point. The accessories are really extensive and it is best to order them directly. Sometimes it's really simple things, like heated grips, if you know it and don't forget it.

Heated grips for Harley-Davidson Tourer

The grip heating can be adjusted continuously from 0 to 6. They are a very good companion on long journeys in the rain.

Street Glide Special is a very nice motorcycle , it has stable value and a beautiful appearance. Absolutely suitable for touring and sporty at the same time, I'm now really a fan of the 114 engine , powerful and economical, very responsive and full of pressure in every situation. So far I have driven well over 25,000 kilometers with the 114 engine in various models from Softail to Tourer. A very reliable companion that I now like even better in combination with the new features.

And if the Street Glide Special had a little more LED lighting, it would be perfect, but there is still the CVO .

THE NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON SOFTAIL STANDARD –

THE QUINTESSENCE OF THE HARLEY CHOPPERS

Milwaukee Eight V-Twin performance and chopper style reduced to the essentials invite you to customize

MILWAUKEE (02/24/2020) - The new Softail Standard comes with all the ingredients that make up an authentic Harley-Davidson chopper : a slim silhouette, the dynamic reserves of the stable Softail chassis and the pressure of the powerful Milwaukee-Eight-V Twins. Painted in classic Vivid Black and refined with chrome-plated components and polished surfaces, it is the quintessence of a factory custom bike reduced to the essentials.

The new Softail Standard 2020
The new Softail Standard 2020

The contrast between dark and light components contributes to the classic and minimalist look of the Softail Standard. It is equipped with a solo seat that reveals the chopped rear fender and has a slim, 13.2 liter fuel tank. The reduced design draws the eye to the engine, a completely black Milwaukee-Eight 107 , which is accentuated by polished rocker arm, primary drive and timer covers. The round cover of the air filter is also black, while the chrome-plated shotgun exhaust system underlines the crouched silhouette of the machine.

The rims of the wire-spoke wheels have a shiny layer of chrome. A 19-inch wheel is used at the front and a 16-inch wheel rotates at the rear. The fork dip tubes are clear coated, the fork clamps and riser are polished, and the decorative ring on the black headlight and the indicators are dipped in chrome. A mini-ape handlebar puts the driver in a chopper-typical sitting position. The compact, digital display instrument is located in its riser, which contributes to the clean look of the front end.

The Softail family

The stable Softail chassis forms the backbone of the Softail Standard. Its double loop tubular steel frame with backbone top ensures low weight and high rigidity. The engine, which is rigidly connected to the frame, and the tubular steel triangular swingarm, which is reminiscent of the cool rigid frame look of bygone eras and at the same time contributes to the dynamic chassis qualities, create extra chassis rigidity. A monoshock with an adjustable spring base that is hidden from the viewer's eye supports the swing arm towards the frame and the telescopic fork designed with dual bending valve technology supports light-footed handling and braking performance. A powerful ABS brake system with disc brakes on the front and rear wheels is responsible for safe deceleration.

The Milwaukee Eight

The powerful propulsion of the Softail Standard is provided by the Milwaukee Eight 107 V-Twin. He is also responsible for the typical characteristics of a Harley-Davidson: look, sound and feel. Two balancer shafts reduce its vibrations to a level that is as comfortable as it is appreciated by fans. Four-valve heads, an advanced cylinder head layout, an oil-cooled exhaust area and a compression ratio of ten to one form the basis for the high torque that is available even at low engine speeds.

Driving report – Harley-Davidson Sport Glide 2020

As part of the Harley-Davidson Triple S event, I was able to try out the 2020 Sport Glide on Spain's winding roads. In 2019, Harley-Davidson sold 817 Sport Glide models, putting it in second place in the Harley rankings after the Street Bob. I was all the more curious in anticipation of the successful sports tourer with the 107 Milwaukee-Eight engine.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide cornering

It has been in the Harley-Davidson range since 2018 and its price starts at €17,995 in the color Vivid Black (as of February 2020). In terms of price, this is a very affordable entry into the tourer class; it offers a lot off the shelf for those who don't feel like converting , or has any bells and whistles, you've come to the right place, just sit up and off you go.

The first driving impression

It makes a good impression when driving, the first thing I noticed was the good seating position and the perfect straight-line stability. I really liked both, but I couldn't really explain what the good straight-line stability had to do with it, because the wheelbase is in the middle of the range; the Fat Bob is just 10cm less and the Heritage is 5cm more. It can be driven sportily through the curves, but not in the same way as a Fat Bob, it is more sedate and provides a safe driving feeling.

The chassis and the seating position

The chassis does a very good job, an upsite-down fork is installed at the front, and a central spring strut with a hydraulically manually adjustable spring works at the rear.

The spring can be adjusted on the right side using the rotary wheel, so it can be quickly adjusted to the circumstances, such as passengers or heavy luggage, without tools. On my trip I set the shock absorber to 5 and with my own weight of just over 106 kilos I found it to be very comfortable.

The seating position is very comfortable; personally, I would probably have running boards installed on the Sport Glide. The ones from the Softail Slim should fit, a different gear lever, holder for the running boards and a different brake pedal would be the solution. This gives you a lot more comfort on your legs on long tours.

Sport Glide Windshield 5.5
Sport Glide Windshield 5.5 Order No. 57400360. Fits '18-later FLSB models.

It has cruise control, which is ideal for long tours, the removable windshield is only a light protection and should be seen more as a design element.

It is not a weather windshield, but Harley-Davidson's accessories range includes a slightly larger and slightly tinted window that can be retrofitted. If you want to ride without a fairing at all, you can quickly remove or put it on for the respective tour.

The Sport Glide has good equipment

The Sport Glide LED headlights

The LED headlight is particularly striking; it not only looks good, but its luminosity ensures that you are clearly seen. The lighting output is generally enormous with the new LED generation installed by Harley-Davidson.

The 107 Milwaukee-Eight engine

The Milwaukee-Eight engine and performance

The Sport Glide is only available with the 107 cui (1745ccm) engine, which puts 84 hp on the road. In contrast to the other Softail models, the 2-in-1 exhaust system takes a few horsepower away from it, but this is only noticeable in a direct comparison because it does put pressure on demand.

If you really give it a push, you will only be slowed down at 190 km/h, which is pretty fast for a Harley and actually not the normal speed range of typical Harley riders. Its power development is easy to control and even inexperienced bikers will be able to handle it very well.

2020 Sport Glide 107 Milwaukee-Eight engine and 2in1 exhaust system
2020 Sport Glide 107 Milwaukee-Eight engine and 2in1 exhaust system

The big advantage of the 107 engine is that it responds earlier than, for example, the 114 engine. Its torque of 145 Nm is available at 3000 rpm. It is more agile at the bottom, while the 114 only really develops its pressure around 500 rpm later.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide cornering
The Harley-Davidson Sport Glide follows the curves faithfully

The 107 engine is a great fit for the Sport Glide, it is economical and runs very smoothly. Harley-Davidson gives it a consumption of 5.3 liters of premium petrol per 100 km. I have already had the experience during other test drives that the engine can actually consume less; the 5.3 L can definitely be seen as realistic. I still don't understand why Harley-Davidson calls it Sport Glide, it's more of a versatile all-rounder.

The suitcases on the Sport Glide

The Sport Glide has been given a few removable cases. Anyone who has ever had cases on their machine will be sorely missing something if they no longer have them. Whether rain gear, or quickly stowing away your jacket during a tour break, drinks, FIRST AID KIT , or whatever.

Harley-Davidson Travel Packs for the Sport Glide
Harley-Davidson Travel Packs for the Sport Glide

When traveling, it is advisable to use the saddlebag travel pack; it is particularly ideal for a ferry crossing. Everything is stowed away in no time and we can continue. You could also take the entire suitcase with you, but unfortunately the one holder is a bit annoying, so the travel pack is definitely a better solution.

Harley-Davidson Sport Glide suitcase
Harley-Davidson Sport Glide suitcase

The cases are lockable, the lock can be operated with gloves and the lid opens slowly and is held in place by a lifter.

Suitcase on the harley-Davidson Sport Glide 2020
Suitcase on the harley-Davidson Sport Glide 2020

You push the lid back on with your knee and it is locked again with your hand. This can all be done with one hand, you know it yourself, usually only one hand is free when you're on the suitcase.

They are hard-shell cases, visually they match the Sport Glide and are not too big.

What counts for the Sport Glide

Your sportiness and other reasons that count for the Sport Glide.

It can be driven in a sporty manner, but I would like to say that corner chasers don't buy a Sport Glide. The confident driver can be found on it, a Harley under €20,000 that can do everything is the argument for the Sport Glide.

Instruments on the Sport Glide
Instruments on the Sport Glide

Whether you're a beginner, a returner or an up-and-comer, the female faction is also keen on her. It has ABS, clearly readable instruments and you won't find any nonsense on it, as we would say in the north. It has already installed forward footrests, which is not the case with the Street Bob ex works, for example. LED combination indicators at the rear, the indicators at the front have not yet made it into LED, which I think is phenomenal if the lighting concept is otherwise converted to LED, but they generally reset themselves automatically after a flashing process and can also be used as hazard warning lights .

There is a USB port under the tank at the front, for example to power external navigation or a cell phone. Cruise control, immobilizer and keyless ignition, which means that the driver only needs to have the key in order to drive off. A good thing is the connection for the battery charger to keep the Sport Glide's battery happy during the winter break.

The Sport Glide accessories

Once you've caught the Harley fever, you'll find a number of accessories in the Harley-Davidson range. The Sport Glide is easy to adjust. Below you will find a list of accessory ideas for the Sport Glide:

The Sport Glide service intervals

The initial inspection is due after 1600 kilometers, which is also very important. Harley-Davidson then claims to have a service or oil change carried out once a year or every 8,000 kilometers.

The Michelin tires

The Michelin Scorcher 31 on the Sport Glide ex works

The Michelin Scorcher 31 is factory-fitted at the front: 130/70 B18 63H and at the rear 180/70 B16 77H. Tire pressure: Front 2.5 bar and rear 2.8 bar. Tire air pressure is a very important issue; be sure to check it regularly to keep the tire working optimally.

Michelin Scorcher 31 on the Sport Glide
Michelin Scorcher 31 on the Sport Glide

That's not just an empty phrase; during a visit to the Michelin factory, the developers repeatedly pointed out to me that tire air pressure is fundamentally important for the tire to function properly.

The tire performs quite well in dry conditions, but has weaknesses in wet or light wet conditions. When asked by Michelin, they are looking into making the Scorcher behave better in the wet.

The colors of the Sport Glide 2020

The Sport Glide will be available at Harley dealers in six different colors in 2020.

Colors: Vivid Black, Midnight Blue / Barracuda Silver, River Rock Gray Denim, Performance Orange, Tahitian Teal, Scorched Orange & Silver Flux

The conclusion to the Sport Glide 2020

The Sport Glide is not so successful for nothing, it can do a lot, the saddle, seating position, clarity and handling are great.

In Spain, the Sport Glide showed me that it can also be sporty, but I had the most fun when I was able to enjoy the beautiful nature with it while driving calmly.

The price makes them very attractive. The conclusion is short and I think everything has already been said, a great bike with no frills for all conditions. Due to the demand and its placement in the ranking, it will certainly remain stable in value and attract a lot of friends.

how do you see it?

Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Anniversary Model 2020
FAT BOY 3OTH ANNIVERSARY HARLEY-DAVIDSON MODEL

HARLEY-DAVIDSON HONORS A STYLE ICON WITH THE NEW FAT BOY 3OTH ANNIVERSARY

The anniversary model appears in a limited edition

MILWAUKEE (02/03/2020) – The introduction of the Fat Boy 30th Anniversary honors a rolling legend. The anniversary bike is covered in deep dark paint with bronze accents and is powered by a black-coated “Milwaukee-Eight 114” engine. Only 2,500 of this limited edition will be made and each machine will have a numbered plaque on the fuel tank console.

“Fat Boy” was an unusual name for a motorcycle that caused quite a stir when it was introduced in 1990. “We modernized the look, proportions and silhouette of a 1949 Hydra Glide for a new generation of riders,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of styling and design.

“Fat Boy buyers liked our post-war design DNA, but were also drawn to the clean lines of contemporary industrial design. We have also incorporated both elements in the current look of the Fat Boy, which the machine has had since the 2018 model year. But we wanted to create something very special for our style icon's 30th birthday. That’s why we gave the anniversary bike a completely dark finish and strictly limited the edition to make this machine even more extraordinary and exclusive.”

The Fat Boy 30th Anniversary

The Fat Boy 30th Anniversary, offered in a limited edition, celebrates three decades of powerful, fascinating design and combines its fascinating reinterpretation with a classic Harley paint job in Vivid Black.

Its Lakester alloy solid disc wheels are finished in Satin Black with milled edges and the black "Milwaukee-Eight 114" drivetrain is equipped with covers in Gloss Black, while the bronze colored lower rocker covers and the lettering on the timer cover add strong accents. Harley-Davidson coated the exhaust system in Black Onyx, a robust vapor deposition finish that reveals the underlying chrome layer depending on the light. Vivid Black headlight housings, handlebars and foot controls and new bronze tank logos complete the dark look that sets this machine apart from traditional Fat Boy production models.

The Fat Boy is a member of the Softail family and since the introduction of the new Softail platform in the 2018 model year, the latest generation of the Fat Boy makes the powerful presence of the original 1990 model even more noticeable. Its massive front end is crowned by an LED headlight in a newly shaped housing. The Lakester alloy solid disc wheels are also reminiscent of the very first Fat Boy and at the same time accentuate its style. A 160 at the front and a 240 at the rear underline the cool factory custom look.

The Softail frame and suspension components create a rigid and lightweight chassis that contributes to handling and performance that will impress even the most demanding cruiser fans. Thanks to the triangular swing arm and the central spring strut hidden under the seat, a classic line is achieved that is reminiscent of a rigid frame. The spring base of the monoshock can be adjusted hydraulically by hand depending on the load.

The Fat Boy 30th Anniversary is powered by a Milwaukee-Eight 114, the most powerful engine that Harley-Davidson offers in the Softail model family. The V-Twin has a decisive influence on the look, sound and feel of a Softail. Since it is rigidly connected to the frame, it also increases chassis rigidity. Two balancer shafts reduce its vibrations to the level that Softail fans appreciate.

The birth of an icon

In 1989, Harley-Davidson presented the first Fat Boy, a machine for the 1990 model year. Its look came from the pens of designers Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz, who combined classic Harley-Davidson style elements with a look that was as clean as it was contemporary. To give the impression that the machine was made from solid metal, the Fat Boy was given a monochrome paint finish in Fine Silver Metallic and a frame coated in the matching light color. The bike rolled on alloy solid disc wheels that would become a signature feature of the Fat Boy models, and the rear wheel was perfectly positioned thanks to the Softail frame. The look was extremely massive and powerful, from the fat front tire under the trimmed fender to the wide handlebars to the seven-inch, chrome-plated, FL-style headlight. Willie G. Davidson also designed the winged tank logo, which has since been reserved for the “Fat Boy” models.

In 1991, the Fat Boy conquered Hollywood when Arnold Schwarzenegger jumped into her saddle for spectacular scenes including a dramatic chase in the blockbuster “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”. The film became a global success and cemented the Fat Boy's reputation as the most powerful statement of the Harley-Davidson brand in markets around the world.

The name Fat Boy

Only Harley-Davidson could have come up with the idea of calling a motorcycle Fat Boy. Willie G. Davidson describes how this came about in his book “100 Years of Harley-Davidson”:

You might be wondering how we came up with the name “Fat Boy.” I've heard many stories about this, and they're almost all wrong. Here's the real story: It's not easy to find a name for a motorcycle that will be known and loved by our fans. So the first question we always have to ask ourselves is: “What will the fans out there on the street call the bike?” We were looking for something unusual and maybe even slightly disrespectful, because after all, your own work should make you grin every now and then bring. For me and for several other insiders who we showed the bike to before the presentation, the machine had a bulky, almost “fat” look. So the marketing people came up with the name “Fat Boy” – and the fans liked it.

Like the entire Softail series, the “Fat Boy” models were repeatedly updated over time and adapted to the requirements of the time. The third generation was released in the 2018 model year - with a completely new chassis and a new engine, the Milwaukee-Eight. Stylistically, the current Fat Boy remains true to its predecessors, from the wide tires to the disc wheels to the huge headlight, and yet it takes their look to the extreme. A Fat Boy is still one of the most impressive motorcycles in the Harley-Davidson portfolio.

The powerful 60° V-twin was developed for a new series of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and is coming to market in two versions: with 1,250 cc for the Pan America and with 975 cc for the Bronx.

The two new releases, first announced in July 2018 as part of the “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” strategic growth plan, are expected to be available by year-end 2020. With them, the US manufacturer is venturing into new market segments.

The new Harley-Davidson Pan America is a modern adventure tourer, a multi-tool for tough use that awakens wanderlust and makes you want to take long trips and discover the unknown.

Bronx

The Bronx is a racy, new streetfighter that is characterized by its unmistakable design and dynamic performance.

The two new Pan America and Bronx models are powered by the new, liquid-cooled Revolution Max engine, which was developed by Harley-Davidson as the basis for a completely new model family.

It is characterized by high elasticity, a wide usable speed range, exciting revving and powerful performance - all with a slim design and low weight.

To ensure optimally centralized masses, the engine is integrated into the frame as a load-bearing component, which in turn benefits handling.

A balancer shaft reduces first-order vibrations for greater comfort and longevity. With clearly defined lines, the striking design of the Revolution Max fits in with the decades-long engine tradition “made in the USA” and at the same time suggests new perspectives.

Revolution Max 975 – development goals

• Displacement: 975 cm³

• Power: more than 115 HP

• Maximum Torque: over 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)

Revolution Max – technical features

• V-twin engine with liquid cooling

o Since 1909, V-twin engines have been at the heart of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The company is now continuing this tradition with the new Revolution Max engine in the medium displacement segment.

o A cylinder angle of 60 degrees provides space for two throttle bodies in a downdraft arrangement, which ensure a high intake volume and powerful performance.

o Liquid cooling keeps the temperature difference between individual engine parts small, regardless of the outside temperature and driving situation.

World-renowned partners in development – brakes and tires

In order to give the Pan America and the Bronx outstanding driving characteristics, Harley-Davidson cooperates with high-class suppliers whose solutions in terms of brakes and tires are perfectly tailored to the new models.

The development collaboration with Brembo resulted in a new, radially mounted four-piston monoblock brake caliper, which, in addition to clear feedback and powerful deceleration, also sets unique accents in terms of design. When it comes to tires, Harley-Davidson worked closely with Michelin.

Tires specially developed for each of the two models have a decisive influence on the driving experience and at the same time offer a high level of grip and performance in every driving situation.
