Harley Davidson Breakout 117

The perfect combination of performance and style

Large 117 Milwaukee-Eight engine, a large tank, the 21 inch front wheel and 240 rear wheel and the Screamin' Eagle Heavy Breather air filter are striking features

Are you looking for a motorcycle that impresses in terms of both performance and style? Then you shouldn't miss the current Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 ! The Breakout 117 FXBRS combines the best of both worlds and is a real eye-catcher on the road. I took her on a trial tour and drove through the Westerwald in the powerful 117 Milwaukee-Eight.

Post overview:

1. A look at the technology: powerful engine and chassis

A look at the technology: powerful engine and chassis When it comes to the technology of the new Harley-Davidson Breakout 117, there is a lot to say. Let's start with the powerful engine: The proven Milwaukee-Eight 117 V-twin engine powers the current Breakout and offers a whopping 1,923 cc displacement and an output of 106 hp. This means that this machine is not only powerful, but also fast and agile.

It really starts firing, especially in the middle gears. I was driving it on the motorway and stopped somewhere around the 200 km/h limit. Harley-Davison states that it has a top speed of 190 km/h, but I didn't feel the limiter switch on. I would even say that she goes over it, but if we're honest, these speeds are not her comfort zone and she wasn't built for that.

But that's just the 177 engine, it always pulls full power when you turn the electronic throttle.

Optimal handling and perfect straight-line stability

The chassis is very good and provides optimal handling and noticeably good straight-line stability. Whether on winding roads or on straight stretches, the Breakout can be controlled precisely. However, the 240 mm rear tire means that it has to be pushed a little into the curves. The driving behavior is slightly different than if you were on the Low Rider S, but that is exactly what makes it so special. The central spring strut is covered by the triangular swingarm, creating an old-school rigid frame look.

So if you are looking for a bike with power and performance that is equipped with plenty of chrome and also looks very good, you should take a closer look at the Harley-Davidson Breakout 117.

2. What's new about the Breakout for the 2023 model year

In 2023, the Harley-Davidson Breakout will be equipped with an electronic cruise control function as standard, which Harley-Davidson calls Cruise Control. Since summer 2023, it has also been possible to order the Breakout 117 with optional electronic traction control.

LED turn signal brake light combination Breakout 117 Harley-Davidson FXBRS
LED turn signal brake light combination Breakout 117 Harley-Davidson FXBRS

Many parts that were previously black, such as exhaust parts, fender struts, side panels, indicators and rear view mirrors, are now chrome plated. The lighting relies entirely on LED technology and offers newly designed turn signals at the rear end, which have an even circle of light for the tail and brake light functions.

3. The look of the new Breakout 117: modern, powerful and cool

When it comes to the look of the new Harley-Davidson Breakout 117, you can only be amazed. The machine not only looks modern and powerful, but is also incredibly cool. The chrome-plated engine and the powerful wheels ensure an eye-catcher on every road. The design is aggressive and muscular, which perfectly matches the performance of the machine.

The LED headlight and the digital instrument display complete the overall picture. The digital display is a little more difficult to read in sunlight, at least with the smaller numbers, so sometimes I didn't really know which gear I was in and had to rely on my instincts. The Breakout 117 looks simply breathtaking and makes every biker's heart beat faster; the digital display in combination with the LED lamps makes it look very modern. The now larger tank makes it look even more powerful, with the thick tank it simply looks like more of a motorcycle, as I said YouTube

4. Travel comfortably with the new Breakout

How comfortable it is to ride on the Breakout 117.

Do you not only want to stand out on the road, but also want to travel comfortably? The saddle, with the removable pillion seat, is really outstanding and provides a pleasant riding experience even on longer tours. We can certainly speak of a good level of comfort, you will be able to get through a long Sunday tour without suffering.

The wide drag-style handlebars and comfortable seating position allow you to ride for hours without back pain or tension. In my opinion, even long distances are no problem with this machine! The perfect combination of performance and comfort makes the new Breakout a real highlight on the road. I'm 1.83 and it's perfect for me. If your legs are a little shorter, you can certainly think about moving the forward footrests so that it also fits a shorter rider.

5. Conclusion: The new Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 perfectly combines performance and style in one package

The new Harley-Davidson Breakout 117 is a combination of performance and style. With its powerful engine and very good chassis, it is technically top notch! But the look of the new Breakout 117 is also impressive. Modern, powerful and cool – these are the attributes that perfectly describe this machine. But it's not just its appearance that impresses, the new Breakout also offers comfort. With it you can travel comfortably and relaxed.

In summary, Harley-Davidson had a very good idea here by equipping the Breakout with the 117 engine and giving it the large tank. It is already very perfect and definitely on the shortlist for every biker who is looking for an extraordinary riding experience.

The Willie G. Product Development Center in Milwaukee is the home of Brad Richards, the Vice President of Design and Creative Director, with whom I was able to speak, as well as Chief Engineer Chr. Exner and several other employees involved in the development of the product CVO models were involved. I can tell you, after conversations like this, you see a lot of things differently.

You don't need to follow other manufacturers when it comes to design, for example. And this is where you can start straight away: how did you come up with the new design line?

The design development of the new CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models

The CVO models are the premium segment at Harley-Davidson and are produced in limited editions. Elaborate paintwork, state-of-the-art technology with many exclusive components.

Both CVO models have their own history, if you want to change something about the legendary Batwing fairing of today's Street Glide models, you have to approach the matter carefully. In 1969 we first saw the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, with the Batwing fairing designed by Willie G. In 2021 it was included in the current “ICON COLLECTION” as the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Revival.

The art is to still express a modern design with as few changes as possible. The Harley-Davidson community generally does not honor major changes.

Finding the balance between evolution & revolution

Brad Richards was aware of this and out of hundreds of design suggestions, nine ended up remaining. From a template with very few changes to a very strong design change, the final design was found.

In the following graphic, you can see a CVO Street Glide that has very little change from the left side and is more of a classic design. The further you look to the right on the graphic, the more intense the changes become.

The final sketches, with the vision of the eagle's wings

The graphic is great with the eagle and the outstretched wings, if you look at the drawings you can see exactly where the design lines run. The eagle's wings extend and develop in a line out of the LED headlight. These two images are the key sketches, this was the moment where the process and implementation of the idea into reality began.

In the side view you can clearly see the imaginary design line where the individual components are visually connected. Especially why the cases have this pallet in the middle, they follow the line just like the side cover and the tank. What also comes to light very nicely is that we are basically talking about two really different Harleys, the difference is much bigger than just the design.

The most noticeable change is in the window, where I initially thought that it would be electronically adjustable. That's not it, the background to this is that they generally wanted to save more weight, and more servomotors would counteract that. They solved it differently: they direct the wind through the air duct under the window. The driver can adjust the flow continuously, which actually works, which I tried out on my test drive. Harley-Davidson claims that helmet turbulence is reduced by up to 60%.

The Willie Wing deflectors

On the side of the fairing there are small “Willie Wing” wings that can be used to direct the wind flow towards the rider. There will be more details on this later, as Harley-Davidson has developed new jackets that guide the directed wind to an opening in the jacket to ensure good ventilation while driving. I later noticed that the fairing of the CVO Street Glide is slightly higher than that of the CVO Road Glide.

Willie Wing air control wing
The Willie Wing air deflectors are infinitely adjustable.

Both CVOs were extensively tested by the developers in a wind tunnel in which the flow patterns were determined. The fairing of the CVO Road Glide is shaped differently and is pulled further forward, so that there is a different flow angle, especially the additional air ducts next to the headlight play a prominent role.

CVO Road Glide fairing

The frame-mounted fairing of the CVO Road Glide looks powerful. The lens is shaped differently and there is also a wind tunnel underneath it, which is infinitely adjustable and can direct the wind towards the rider or away from the rider and over the helmet. Alternatively, the flap can be closed.

There are additional air ducts directly next to the headlight of the CVO Road Glide, but the flow is not directed directly at the driver, but rather pulls up in front of the driver to produce a wall of air, which ensures less turbulence.

Closing the flaps would change everything and lead to turbulence, unlike the previous model, where this was still possible up to and including 2019.

Closing the flaps would change everything and lead to turbulence, unlike the previous model, where this was still possible up to and including 2019.

I was particularly interested in this topic, now you have full protection behind the fairing again and no permanent pressure on the upper body, which was rather annoying on colder days and tours in cool climes.

It is possible to direct the wind to the rider “Willie Wings”

This gives the driver the opportunity to additionally and effectively ventilate the jacket on warm days.

The fairing below the Willie Wings extends far down and creates a design connection to the rear of the CVO Road Glide.

The test drive and where the differences are

The driving feeling of the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide

The current Street Glide rider will feel right at home on the new CVO Street Glide when he takes his first ride. The cockpit is of course something completely new, but it can still be operated intuitively once you understand the basics and how to use the new switches.

The first driving moment will fascinate you and the modern view will be a little irritating, but basically we have the familiar feeling of the Street Glide in front of us. Easy steering and a very good seating position convey a good feeling. The saddle has been ergonomically adapted, they have thought about how to improve comfort on particularly bad roads, this includes not only the new chassis, but also the newly shaped seat.

Harley-Davidson Düsseldorf online shop

Brad Richards said that on bad roads you often slid into your seat and took a different position. There are a lot of bad roads in Milwaukee where they were able to test it extensively.

Thanks to the not noticeably new shape inside the seat, you no longer slide forward and maintain your driving position. That worked well in Milwaukee, but we'll see whether the saddle is really suitable for touring when I've ridden it for more than 300 kilometers. Basically, I haven't had any bad experiences with the CVO saddles, I hope it stays that way, the first impression was definitely very good.

The real change is the CVO Road Glide

The new CVO Road Glide will captivate even more bikers than before, at least the biker will now be able to decide more clearly on the respective model.

The driver! The new cockpit and the new: “I own the road” feeling. I was completely blown away from the first moment, the APE handlebars provide a great driving experience, you will hate it or love it. Very good steering behavior, the driver feels like he has everything under control. Personally, even more would have changed, so my choice would have been the 21 inch front wheel in the CVO Road Glide and their cases would have been in an elongated version, which would make them appear even more perfect as a bagger. This could of course be achieved with a subsequent conversion.

The CVO Road Glide and the APE handlebars
The CVO Road Glide and the APE handlebars

I've driven both models now and the difference is like night and day. You definitely have to take a test drive as soon as possible to experience this feeling. It is clear that not everyone will be able to afford it, but this development will certainly be reflected in the other models later on. I assume that there will be an opportunity to test the new CVOs on a test ride at the European Bike Week 2023 at the latest.

The new SHOWA chassis

Harley-Davidson has installed a new and hydraulically adjustable Showa suspension on the CVOs models. At the front there is a 47 mm upside-down fork with a travel of 117 mm. An upside down fork has always been a good thing, it is very torsionally rigid, which brings more stability to the chassis and, in combination with the new adjustable rear shock absorbers, is a good choice.

Müller Motorcycles Hydro Clutch

During my first test drive, the chassis made a very good impression; adjustment is quick using the new twist grip. It would have been nicer if they had found a position where you could adjust it while driving, then the twist grip wouldn't be so visually in the way and on the long tour you could adapt more quickly to changing road conditions. After removing the right case, the preload can be additionally adjusted using the tool provided. Everything worked fine for me and I only adjusted the suspension once using the adjustment wheel.

German Autobahn

I drove on the highway in the USA at about 80 miles (130km/h), maybe just over that. When I asked whether the team had also dealt with the topic of “German Autobahn”, I initially got a big laugh from the entire team, but yes, that was actually a topic. The new CVO will be limited to 120 miles (193 km/h), was the information on site, but in the end it was limited to 178 km/h in Germany. The new Milwaukee VVT 121 engine was tested on the test bench at permanently higher speeds and is said to be stable. The new Showa suspension remained stable on the track when I drove on the highway.

Cockpit CVO Street Glide 2023
Cockpit CVO Street Glide 2023

What surprised me was that the two Harley-Davidson US Bagger-Race drivers Kyle and Travis Wyman are more involved in the development than you might think.

They led the test drives and were available to answer questions, as was the entire development team. They were always there, you can tell straight away that they are really excited about their job at Harley-Davidson, like many others in the company.

It was actually good to hear that many of them have been with the company for over 20 years and were not caught up in the big wave of layoffs in which around 600 employees worldwide had to leave the company about three years ago.

In any case, I'm looking forward to driving the new CVOs on our roads, I'm excited to see what comes out of the European exhaust system. In the USA it sounded really robust for an original system, especially when accelerating and the pressure was building up. I can't imagine that we'll hear that here.

Another word about the design – case - exhaust system

I wanted to know why people are using the short suitcases again. It is part of the new design concept, the new cases are slightly larger and the 500 watt amplifier is no longer stored in the case. An amplifier like this weighs a lot and, when placed on the outside of the suitcase, can definitely influence the driving behavior.

It has now found a new place and the new cases have been adapted to the basic design with this pallet on the side, which can also be seen on the tank. The new design of the cases is part of the basic concept. You also experience greater freedom from lean angles when driving through curves in a sporty manner.

In addition, the exhaust system on the two CVO Harley-Davidson models has been redesigned with a diameter that is 11.5 centimeters larger to make it even more visible. This gives the rear area of the two CVOs an even more powerful expression.

The CVO framework itself has not been changed

Basically, the frame is based on the original frame of the previous CVO models. This means the sissy bar, the removable luggage rack and other products from the accessories range will still fit.

However, there are some components that have been redesigned, for example the fork bridge is now cast from aluminum and saves a whopping three kilos in weight. This has a direct effect on the steering behavior. You can feel the lightness even though you're not driving yet, the handling has become significantly better.

House of Flames

Weight saving is a big issue

Weight is an important issue at Harley-Davidson. On the one hand, you want to drive a so-called “heavy machine”, especially with the touring models, but it is enough if it looks heavy and is easy to drive.

You saved around 14 kilos in weight on the CVO Street Glide and around 15.8 kilos on the CVO Road Glide. That doesn't sound like a huge weight saving, but in the right places it can make a big difference. In this case, it is the easy steering behavior and handling when stationary, which has been achieved by the significantly lighter fork bridge. The curb weight is 363 kg for the CVO Street Glide and 375 kg for the CVO Road Glide (according to manufacturer). It feels like it has become lighter

The new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine

The new VVT engine is a very complex topic!

The Milwaukee-Eight now has an incredible 121 ci, which is rounded up to 2 liters of displacement (1977ccm) and brings a powerful 189 Nm of torque at 3000 revolutions with 117 HP (86kw) at 4500 RPM to the road. (Information according to manufacturer). Surprisingly, the engine only requires at least 91 octane, so we can drive it with conventional 95 Super gasoline.

Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121

Rick's Motorcycles helmets
  • Displacement: 121 cui (1,977 cm3)
  • Bore x Stroke: 103.5mm x 117.5mm
  • Compression ratio: 11.4:1
  • Torque: 183 Nm/3500 rpm (expected European homologation)
  • Power: 86 kW (117 HP)/5020 rpm (expected European homologation)

You can also find further technical information in this article about the CVOs on the Harley site.

What interested me most!

I was particularly excited about the power delivery of the new 120ci engine with the variable valve control. We already know this technology from the Revolution Max engine, but the engine is not really comparable to the Milwaukee-Eight. In the Pan America and Sportster models it is the supporting part around which everything is built. With the Pan America you get another real push at around 6300 revolutions up to 9300 revolutions.

The new cockpit in the sport setting, additional widgets can be activated.
The new cockpit in the sport setting, additional widgets can be activated.

That wouldn't have been right on a Harley-Davidson tourer, but now you could see that the speed range on the new CVOs, as well as on the current tourer models, goes into the red area at 5500, which made me a little more confident.

With a cruiser you expect that the power can be accessed from the basement.

My first ride started on the CVO Street Glide and the excitement is building. We first drove through Milwaukee and then went into the area around Milwaukee with Travis Wyman in the lead.

Now the respective gear is displayed when the clutch is pulled

Now it was time to find out how it shifts, the neutral gear is easy to find and you can now always see on the display which gear is currently engaged, on the current models you can't see it when the clutch is pulled in, but a new gear has now been installed. Sensor installed. When it comes to the gear sensor, however, you have to ask why it wasn't given a hidden position. When I asked about the position and that it actually disturbed the clean look, I got the answer: "Yes, that's the point" .

The gear sensor now shows the gear while the clutch is pulled. Visually, this could have been solved better, its use may have been decided later, but it's good that it exists.

Test - Harley-Davidson Street Glide CVO and Road Glide CVO 2023 4

It sounded as if someone came along after the design and said this is where the sensor needs to go. I'm pretty sure that quite a few of them will fall victim to the steam jet. The steam jet is generally not a good way to wash. But from a technical point of view it's good that it now always shows the current gear on the display.

You can hear the switching process every now and then, but it's a brand new machine that I'm driving. In general, you should always shift gears a lot when driving in and not drive too low speed, so you will have a lot of friends with your gearbox in the long term.

The driving experience with the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 ci engine!

Wow, it turns out just as I hoped, the new VVT 121 engine is all about building up pressure from the basement and consistently bringing power to the road.

There is no performance gap and you can't even feel where or in which range the variable valve control is working. As an experienced Milwaukee-Eight driver, you just notice that something has happened significantly in terms of performance. I had a slight suspicion that the valve timing started somewhere around 4000 rpm, but I wouldn't want to sign that. Even in sixth gear it pulls up from below, and from 2000 rpm you're fully in the game.

If you demand full performance, you have to hold on throughout or use the abdominal muscles that you hopefully have. It's just fun, I haven't been this excited for a long time.

The basic basis is still the Milwaukee-Eight engine

I generally drive on different roads in Europe, the new engine covers every spectrum. It is based on the proven Milwaukee-Eight, but more displacement does not always mean more driving fun or more dynamics. It is entirely possible that an engine with a displacement of around 2 liters suddenly has much less agility.

I don't feel that way about the VV2, which has pressure across the entire speed range. This certainly means that it is not just the new valve control, but many additional components that have been redesigned. Other fundamental components in this new plan are the intake track and the sporty camshaft, which were tuned to perfection on the dyno test bench at the factory.

Intake track of the new CVO models and the previous 117 models
Intake track of the new CVO models and the previous 117 models

The now larger exhaust was also included in the outlet of the flows, because without the perfectly coordinated exhaust back pressure, the engine cannot deliver its full power to the road.

In the Willie G. Product Development Center they have a dyno test bench on which the mapping of the engines is simulated under a wide variety of conditions. Here they try out extreme situations; glowing manifolds are part of the daily test. The spectrum is very broad; after all, it's about recreating driving situations that can occur anywhere in the world.

The main thing here is to ensure long-term stability of the engine while still providing the best possible performance.

This confirmed again that mapping should only be done by a specialist. It's not for nothing that some Harley dealers invest tens of thousands of euros in a Dynojet test stand with lambda probe measurements and trained staff.

The New AIRBOX
The new airbox replaces the Heavy Breather intake used on previous CVO Milwaukee-Eight 117 engines.
The airbox volume is 4.0L, approximately 50 percent more than the Heavy Breather, which helps improve performance by providing more space for the molded-in velocity stack radius and a larger volume of clean air.
The new intake is lighter, requires fewer parts and has no exposed fasteners and significantly reduces intake noise compared to the Heavy Breather.

The new airbox from the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121

The new high-performance camshaft with higher lift and longer life than the Milwaukee-Eight 117 camshaft contributes to more power and torque. The valvetrain was equipped with high-performance tappets and an inner cam bearing, as well as higher-lift valve springs to maintain durability when a more aggressive camshaft is used.

The high-performance camshaft

The engine uses variable valve timing (VVT) to reduce compromises between valves, peak power, bottom end torque, fuel economy, emissions and running quality. VVT controls and controls the timing of opening and closing of the valves suitable for a wide speed range.

Dual same phaser
The intake and exhaust timings continue to run together on one camshaft.

Valve
The timing adjusts continuously by 20 or 40 degrees of camshaft rotation to the degree of crankshaft rotation.
Phasers allow intake and exhaust timing to be delayed by 40 degrees.

The new cylinder head design

• The combustion chamber has been reshaped with deeper spark plugs and an improved squish band to create more turbulence that accelerates combustion, improving performance and fuel economy.
• Oval intake ports and flat intake valve seats increase intake air velocity and vortex, contributing to greater power and fuel efficiency.
• Compression ratio increased from 10.2:1 (Milwaukee-Eight® 117 engine MY22) to 11.4:1, increasing torque at lower speeds and reducing fuel consumption. Higher compression is made possible by the improved cylinder head cooling design, improved combustion rate in the combustion chamber and improved knock detection to protect the engine from pre-ignition.

The new cooling system

An improved cooling system focused on the exhaust valve area of each cylinder head further improves thermal comfort for the driver compared to the Milwaukee-Eight 117 engines in previous CVO models, particularly in low-speed and hot weather driving situations.
Redesigned four-valve cylinder heads feature new channels for coolant flow around the exhaust valve areas. An electric pump circulates a coolant solution first to the hotter rear cylinder head, then to the front cylinder head, and then to a new heat exchanger (radiator) located at the bottom front of the frame and assisted by a thermostatically controlled fan. Airflow from the fan is directed under the motorcycle to increase comfort for the rider and passenger, especially at low vehicle speeds.

The new driving modes

Now the new driving modes have also found their way into the tourer class. You can travel with Road, Sport and Rain, and you have the option of configuring two additional driving programs yourself. More on that later so you can try it all out.

Willie G. Product Development Center Milwaukee
Willie G. Product Development Center Milwaukee

Willie G. Product Development Center in Milwaukee

What they do in the Willie G. Product Development Center is pretty awesome, soundproof rooms where not only the engine sound, but also the sound quality of the Rockford Fosgate system is tuned. A room with antennas to measure the outgoing radiation from the Harley-Davidson and to simulate impressions from the outside, as you can experience at a gas station, for example, when the cash register system overlays the FOB transmitter. A lot has been invested in this area to solve such problems avoid.

You can develop all of this directly in the development center under one roof. They still lack their own wind tunnel, so in this case they have resorted to an external one, whereby the topic of wind and flow is becoming increasingly important.

A tough test bench, not for the faint of heart

The toughest test is the 100,000 mile test on a shock simulator. Every month you put between two and five Harley-Davidson motorcycles on a damper test bench. I was able to watch live how a machine was put through its paces. Basically, the bike is shaken around the clock and gets really violent shocks that are supposed to simulate an uneven road surface.

I'm surprised that the Harley they had there on the test bench even runs for an hour, unfortunately I wasn't allowed to film it, it was an extremely tough test and when I imagine them putting my old EVO on it, I get it I break out in a sweat just at the thought.

The new SKYLINE OS infotainment system

The new Skyline OS will change everything, I'm up for something like that, not every Harley fan will say that. Basically you don't have to do much, you can just let it run. What I want to say is that you don't have to be afraid of this new technology. Anyone who can use an iPad and reads the operating instructions beforehand will be surprised at how easy everything is.

Of course, on my first test drive I first looked at how it all worked, but I didn't allow myself to be distracted. The power delivery from the new engine was the most important thing for me. Personally, I don't like the switches and rockers, at least the joystick is still there, you can access all functions with it, as well as with the additional buttons.

The switch combination is too crowded and too close together for me. They are now illuminated, which is a very good thing. On my first drive, it wasn't the Skyline OS infotainment system that distracted me, but the switches - you wouldn't think so. The large 12.3 inch TFT color touchscreen is really great. Very bright and I am impressed by the design of the displays.

One of the first questions will be, what about Apple Car Play and Google Android Auto?

According to current information, the Skyline OS is compatible with Apple Car Play, but there are problems with Android Auto because Google no longer wants to release the system for motorcycles. It's not Harley-Davidson's fault, it's Google's fault.

But you can connect your Android cell phone to the Skyline OS and, for example, play music, make phone calls or have announcements sent to you. A headset is included with the CVO models.

Apple users can count themselves luckier, there are no restrictions here.

Harley-Davidson Ride Planner – This probably goes without saying, the Harley-Davidson app works fully with the new infotainment system.

WiFi, weather widgets, garage door opener

The CVO now has WiFi and can show a current weather map on the display. There is even the possibility of programming three garage door openers, the only question is whether the frequencies are compatible with the European ones. According to initial information, this only works in North America so far.

My personal conclusion about the new Harley-Davidson CVO models

I'm more than thrilled, anyone who can afford it will get a great Harley-Davidson. After all, the price here in Germany is well under €50,000. The CVO Street Glide costs : from 45,495 euros (Austria from 55,185 €) CVO Road Glide: from 45,495 euros (Austria from 55,195 €).

If you look closely at what it has and can do, the price is ok at first. I get really excited when I think about driving with the new VVT 121ci engine; the pulling power in all situations is almost perfect. Unfortunately, I didn't ride any top motorcycle routes with it, but the impression was more than clear what it could do. We found a few tight corners that I was able to pull out of the basement with it.

It feels like two completely different Harleys!

The difference between the two models is really big, the Road Glide drove me completely crazy. The seating position and the APE handlebars are awesome, you feel like the boss on the highway. For my colleague Frank, from Motorrad News Magazine, who was riding the CVO Street Glide at the same time, it was exactly the opposite; he was immediately married to the CVO Street Glide.

The lean angle has probably decreased by a few degrees, I'll get to the bottom of that later on my next test drives. Although I'm not sure if that's the case, maybe I was just traveling too fast in the curve.

2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide
A little quicker in the curves on the Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide

There is actually so much more to report, especially the new Skyline OS multifunction center still has a lot to offer and needs to be discovered.

I'm really looking forward to the next test drive and if I hadn't spent so much money on beautiful living and technology over the last few years on my website and other arguments, the CVO Road Glide in Whiskey Neat would be my favorite and would go straight into mine Hike garage.

THE NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON CVO MODELS – EVEN MORE DESIGN, PERFORMANCE AND TECHNOLOGY

CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide are powered by the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121

FRANKFURT (June 7, 2023) – Two new, limited premium models from Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) will make the Harley-Davidson driving experience even more impressive in the future. These are the new CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE) and the new CVO Road Glide (FLTRXSE), which will be presented by the Motor Company in mid-2023.

They offer even more advanced technology, even greater driver comfort and even more dynamic performance than previous CVO types, and they are powered by the new, powerful Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 V-Twin. Its exclusive, new design represents the visual further development of the Harley-Davidson Grand American Touring platform.

Presentation of the Harley-Davidson CVO model 2023

New, fascinating design

The 2023 CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide open a new chapter in Harley-Davidson motorcycle design. The fascinating new look ensures dynamic lines of the key components of the motorcycle: fairing, tank, side covers and case. The result is a visual change that is clearly based on the familiar design of previous Harley-Davidson Grand American Touring motorcycles, but significantly develops it further.

  • CVO Street Glide Fairing
The new Batwing fairing, exclusive to the CVO Street Glide, retains its basic T-shape look, but the silhouette has been updated to create a more dynamic overall appearance. The splitstream ventilation is now fully integrated into the design and the fairing also extends under the headlight. A distinctive design element is the Signature LED light sources, which ensure that the machine is highly recognizable, not just at night. To sharpen the clean look of the fairing, the amber LED indicators have been integrated into the left and right light strips, eliminating the need for separate direction indicators.

  • Fairing of the CVO Road Glide
With the new CVO Road Glide fairing, the designers present a decisive and athletic update of the classic Road Glide Sharknose fairing. To create a flowing look, the lower edge of the fairing body faces the shapes of the tank, and the lower fairing panels face the front cylinder. The wide LED headlight appears to consist of two elements - a visual reminiscence of previous Road Glide fairings. The W-shape of the Signature LED light sources ensures that the CVO Road Glide is immediately recognizable.
2023 House Of Thunder Harley-Davidson Lübeck

There are additional new design elements in both models. The front fender has been kept slimmer than before in order to reduce the visual mass at the front of the motorcycle and draw more attention to the characteristic wheel, the upside-down fork and the Brembo radial brake calipers. The new 6-gallon (22.7 L) fuel tank features two edges in the shoulder area. The shape of the side covers corresponds to the three-dimensional appearance of the side cases, harmonizes with the fairing and the tank and underlines the visual dynamism of the side line.

Although the new cases appear more compact than their predecessors, they offer more space for luggage and speakers. With the combination of black, contrast-milled cast light alloy rims and wire spokes, the new Combo Cast Laced Wheels in 19 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear make a statement for individuality. Their design also enables the use of the TPMS tire pressure monitoring system on a wire-spoke wheel.

Paint and finish

The new CVO Street Glide and the new CVO Road Glide are offered in two paint finishes:

  • The basic version uses Dark Platinum with Bright Smoked Satin Pinstriping . The interior areas of the cladding were also coated accordingly. The drive train and air filter are finished in gloss black and have chrome accents on the inserts of the V2. The lower portion of the two-piece rocker box cover, pushrod tubes and exhaust were finished in Scorched Chrome. The Parts and Accessories of the Adversary Collection are powder-coated black and feature milled accents.
Open House on April 25, 2025, at Harley-Davidson Münsterland

The two-tone version is optional and available at an additional cost

Whiskey Neat & Raven Metallic

Available with color-coordinated interior lining. This intricate paint job is applied by hand, layering Raven Metallic surfaces over the deep orange Whiskey Neat base and airbrushing accents. Bright orange pinstripes separate the color areas from each other. The drive train and air filter are finished in gloss black and have orange highlights on the engine inserts. The lower portion of the two-piece rocker housing cover is painted Whiskey Neat, and the pushrod tubes and exhaust are chrome plated. The corresponding parts and accessories of the Adversary Collection have a double anodized black and orange finish.

First-class performance

The new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 is used exclusively in the new CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models. In terms of displacement and performance, the 121 cui (1,977 cm 3 ) 45-degree V-twin sets new standards at Harley-Davidson. Compared to the Milwaukee-Eight 117 of the previous models, the European homologation is expected to offer around 8 percent more torque and around 12 percent more power.

In addition, it dissipates less waste heat to the driver and scores with an attractive sound. The new features of the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 include optimized, liquid-cooled cylinder heads with a new cooling system, variable valve timing (VVT) and a new intake tract. A balancer shaft reduces its vibrations.

Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121

  • Displacement: 121 cui (1,977 cm3)
  • Bore x Stroke: 103.5mm x 117.5mm
  • Compression ratio: 11.4:1
  • Torque: 183 Nm/3500 rpm (expected European homologation)
  • Power: 86 kW (117 HP)/5020 rpm (expected European homologation)

New features of the Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121:

Compared to an otherwise identical engine with conventional valve timing, variable valve timing (VVT) the usable speed range, optimizes the torque curve and improves fuel efficiency, resulting in greater range. The electronic engine control ensures a continuously variable valve overlap in the range of 40 degrees of crankshaft rotation or 20 degrees of camshaft rotation. Compared to similar motorcycles with a Milwaukee-Eight 117, the reduction in average fuel consumption can be approximately 3 to 5 percent*.

An optimized cooling system in the area of the exhaust valves of the cylinder heads reduces engine waste heat, which the driver could find annoying, especially at low speeds and in hot weather.

CVO 2023 Harley-Davidson cooling circuit
The coolant is routed first to the rear cylinder head and then to the front cylinder head.

The new four-valve cylinder heads have newly designed coolant channels in the exhaust valve area. An electric pump ensures the circulation of the coolant, supplying first the hotter rear cylinder head and then the front cylinder head. The cooler is located in the lower front area of the frame and is equipped with a thermostatically controlled fan.

The new cylinder heads feature a redesigned combustion chamber with oval intake ports and flat intake valve seats. In this way, the speed and spiral turbulence of the intake mixture and therefore the filling level are increased in order to significantly optimize performance and reduce fuel consumption*. Harley-Davidson has increased the compression ratio from 10.2:1 (2022 Milwaukee-Eight 117) to 11.4:1, increasing torque at lower speeds and reducing fuel consumption*. The higher compression is made possible by the improved layout of the cylinder head cooling, the optimized combustion and improved knock sensors.

Compared to the Milwaukee-Eight 117, the new high-performance camshaft provides a larger lift and longer valve opening times, which helps increase power and torque. In accordance with the requirements of the camshaft, the valve train was equipped with high-performance tappets and new bearings as well as adapted valve springs for a larger lift.

A new intake tract contributes to higher performance and lower emissions. The diameter of the throttle plate was increased from 55 mm on the Milwaukee-Eight 117 to 58 mm and the throttle plate was positioned closer to the cylinders and intake valves to improve intake airflow.

Milwaukee Eight 117
Milwaukee Eight 117

The newly shaped light metal intake manifold ensures more direct intake and a smoother transition from the round throttle valve to the oval intake channels. New intake components improve turbulence and increase the mass throughput by approximately 7.5 percent and the intake speed by approximately 10.3 percent. Injectors with a high capacity of 5.5 grams/second supply the engine with the right amount of mixture as needed.

A new airbox replaces the Heavy Breather air filter that was used on many CVO Milwaukee-Eight 117 engines. At 4.0 liters, its volume is around 50 percent more than the Heavy Breather, which contributes to increased performance as there is more space for the integrated intake tract, allowing for a larger intake air volume. The new intake tract is lighter, requires fewer parts, has no exposed fasteners and significantly reduces intake noise compared to the Heavy Breather.

The alternator's charging capacity Their capacity at idle and at cruising speed is now higher to meet the needs of additional electrical consumers while optimally supplying the battery.

The exhaust gases escape through a high-performance exhaust , the silencer diameter of which has been increased from 4.0 inches (10.16 cm) in the previous models to 4.5 inches (11.43 cm). The engineers perfectly tailored its aerodynamic properties to the engine tuning. Sound and volume have been optimized within the framework of legal requirements, so that an impressive sound is created - especially when accelerating - which sets the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide apart from other touring models with standard exhaust.

An improved shift drum with redesigned idle geometry in the 6 Speed Cruise Drive transmission makes it easier to find and engage the idle.

Further technical optimizations

In order to best realize the performance of the new Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121, the engineers when developing the CVO Street Glide and the CVO Road Glide took into account every technical aspect that could affect performance and comfort.

The curb weight of both machines has been significantly reduced compared to the previous models - by 14 kg for the CVO Street Glide and by 15 kg for the CVO Road Glide (each without operating materials). Wherever possible, gram for gram was saved. The lower weight improves performance in terms of deceleration, handling and acceleration and makes it easier to lift the machine from the side stand, balance while stationary and maneuver.

high-performance chassis components also ensure optimized handling and a significant improvement in driving comfort compared to previous CVO models .

  • The front wheel is guided by a 47 mm Showa upside-down fork , which supports easy handling by being very torsion-resistant and sensitive to ensure safe contact of the wheel with the road. Your suspension travel is 117 mm.

At 76 mm, the suspension travel at the rear is over 40 percent larger than in the previous models for the 2022 model year. The Showa shock absorbers with dual outboard emulsion technology have a new hydraulic preload regulator, which is located in front of the left case. This means that the preload can be readjusted without tools and without dismantling the case when luggage or a passenger comes on board.

Adjusting the preload for the primary loading condition (the condition in which the bike is most frequently used; e.g. with rider only or with rider and passenger) is done by removing the right case and adjusting it using the tool provided.

To ensure first-class suspension comfort under a wide range of load conditions, the rebound damping can also be adjusted. With the cases removed, the adjustment is made using an adjuster on the underside of each shock absorber.

for the deceleration , ensuring a precise braking feel and excellent braking performance. The front twin discs are actuated by powerful, new Brembo four-piston brake calipers, which have been mounted radially. The engineers increased the diameter of the front brake discs from 300 mm (previous models) to 320 mm. The 300 mm brake disc on the rear wheel works with a four-piston Brembo brake caliper.

The light sources of the new machines enable better visibility in the dark and perfect visibility by other road users. The lighting was made entirely using LED technology, which also underlines the style. Instead of annoying hot spots, the LED headlights of both models produce a very even light distribution.

The signature lighting consists of a light element that surrounds the headlight and light sources on the fairing flanks. It ensures a distinctive appearance for both CVO bikes. A shutdown sequence keeps the light sources operating for 10 seconds after the vehicles are parked.

The designers also integrated the front indicators into this signature lighting. They capture the viewer's eye and underline the clean look of the front end. At the rear, lights are used that combine taillights, brake lights and direction indicators and are mounted between the rear fender and the cases.

For the first time, the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models now offer selectable driving modes that electronically control the performance characteristics of the engine and the intensity of intervention by the assistance systems. Each mode affects power delivery, engine braking, cornering ABS (C-ABS) and cornering traction control (C-TCS). With a few exceptions, the desired driving mode can be selected using the mode button while driving or when the machine is stationary. The display acknowledges the choice with the corresponding symbol.

  • Road: The balanced Road mode is intended for everyday use. The engine offers a less sharp power delivery than in Sport mode. C-ABS and C-TCS intervene earlier.
  • Sport: Sport mode offers the most unfiltered interaction between driver and machine. The rider experiences the full performance potential of the motorcycle directly and with the highest precision, with unlimited peak performance and full revving pleasure. The C-TCS works at the lowest sensible level and with increased engine braking effect in coasting mode.
  • Rain: This mode is designed for rain or otherwise limited traction. This makes it ideal for riders who are still getting familiar with the motorcycle. Revving speed and power are significantly reduced in favor of manageable acceleration, as is the engine braking effect, while C-ABS and C-TCS work at the highest level.
  • Custom: Two freely programmable custom modes allow the driver to configure characteristics specifically tailored to their personal preferences via the touchscreen display. Within certain limits, he can set the engine characteristics, braking effect and revving as desired, as well as the intensity of the C-TCS and C-ABS interventions.

The Rider Safety Enhancements of the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models are an assistance system package that supports the driver in unexpected dangerous situations or unfavorable road conditions by adapting the engine's power delivery to the available traction - for example when accelerating or decelerating becomes. For this purpose, the electronics access the braking system and the drive train.

The CVO Street Glide and the CVO Road Glide have the following systems:

  • Reflex braking system with corner-optimized electronic brake force distribution (C-ELB)
  • Cornering anti-lock braking system (C-ABS)
  • Cornering traction control (C-TCS), adjustable via driving modes
  • Cornering traction control (C-DTSC)
  • Vehicle Hold Assist (VHC)
  • Tire air pressure monitoring system (TPMS)
Aerodynamics and thermal comfort

are improved by new fairings with streamlined windows, which are part of a new, aerodynamic concept. Each element of this concept was developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, wind tunnel analysis and real-world testing, with a focus on further reducing turbulence in the rider's helmet area at higher speeds.

Compared to the fairings and windows of previous Grand American Touring models, the synthesis of optimized aero design and adjustable elements results in a significant improvement in overall aerodynamic comfort.

  • In wind tunnel tests, the subjectively perceived turbulence on the driver's helmet was reduced by an average of 60 percent compared to corresponding 2022 models.
  • With the new, adjustable air channels in the central area of the fairings of both models, the air flow can be conveniently regulated according to the ambient conditions and the driver's clothing. The system design calms the pressure conditions behind the fairing and thus reduces air turbulence on the helmet.
  • With the new, adjustable air control elements in the rear area of the CVO Road Glide fairing, more or less air can be directed to the driver's body depending on his wishes and comfort.
  • The new, adjustable air deflectors on the fork of the CVO Street Glide help reduce wind turbulence in the rider's head area.
  • The new engine cooling system further improves thermal comfort for the driver compared to the Precision Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 117 engines in previous CVO models - especially at low speeds and hot weather.

Long-distance ergonomics

  • A redesigned seat contour and new upholstery materials offer a significant improvement in long-distance comfort for most drivers. The seat is shaped to rotate the rider's hips to a neutral position relative to the spine, reducing back and neck fatigue. The seat height of the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide is 67.8 cm (with rider).
  • The front brake lever is adjustable so that its position can be optimally adapted to the driver's hand size.
  • There are two ports for heated equipment under the seat.
  • The standard heated grips can now be adjusted either on the grip or via the infotainment display.

The new handlebars of the CVO Road Glide are now ergonomically optimized and have an adjustment range of 27 degrees to offer the driver's hands more comfort, especially on long journeys.

New infotainment with Skyline OS

The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models use a new infotainment system based on the Skyline Operating System. The new TFT color touchscreen is the most technologically advanced display ever offered on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It replaces all analog instruments and most switches found in previous CVO motorcycles. The premium display has been designed to be bright and clear, offers three viewing options and is compatible with Apple and Android devices.

NOTE : CarPlay from the driver's Apple cell phone can be used via the display. Android Auto is not yet available, but Android users can already stream music and make or receive calls via the system. A compatible wireless headset is required to use certain features. A headset is included.

The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models feature the following new infotainment features:

  • The 12.3-inch TFT screen is 90 percent larger diagonally and 400 percent larger in terms of screen area than the 6.5-inch BOOM! Box GTS screen of earlier CVO models. It is brighter and presents the driver with more information in a clear and concise manner.
  • The touchscreen can also be operated with gloves and is insensitive to rain or other natural influences. It is not deactivated while driving, but some of its functions are not available. In order to minimize interaction with the touchscreen, the interface to the driver is primarily established via controls on the handlebars.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity enables wireless connection to the driver's mobile phone and the provision of live services such as traffic, weather and navigation map updates.
  • The new speech recognition system is conversational and does not rely on fixed prompts. This allows the driver to say general requests such as “Find a gas station” to carry out a search in the navigation. Free map updates for the integrated navigation system are available for three years.
  • The new touchscreen interface allows the driver to activate the ECU programming required to install certain accessories (e.g. fog lights and heated grips). While these updates were previously carried out by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, the owner can now install the corresponding accessories themselves.
  • The Bluetooth receiver for wireless headsets is now integrated into the system - a separate module is no longer required.
  • The CVO Road Glide's interior panel features a left and right media compartment, each large enough to fit most standard cell phones in their protective cases. The right compartment is equipped with a USB-C port.
  • The CVO Street Glide interior trim features a media compartment under the infotainment screen. It is equipped with a high quality lining to protect mobile phones from scratches. With a width of approx. 25 cm and a depth of approx. 20 cm, it offers significantly more volume than the previous media compartment of the Batwing fairing and is designed for most current mobile devices including a case. Harley-Davidson also equips it with a USB-C port.
  • The CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide models are equipped with a high-quality, high-performance Harley-Davidson Stage II audio system powered by Rockford Fosgate, which features a new 4-channel amplifier with 500 watts RMS.
  • The audio system includes Harley-Davidson Audio powered by Rockford Fosgate
Stage II 3-way fairing speakers measuring 6.5 inches and Stage II
3-way speakers measuring 5 x 7 inches in the cases, each capable of 150 watts RMS .
  • Several preset EQ curves are available via the touchscreen (e.g.: Rock and Dance). Additionally, the 7-band equalizer can be used to create custom sound settings.
  • Harley-Davidson Audio powered by Rockford Fosgate Stage III 6x9-inch speakers for the cases are available through the Genuine Parts & Accessories program and can be powered by the stock 500-watt amplifier.

Screen display options

The driver can choose between three screen display options:

  • Cruise : The most traditional representation shows a separate speedometer and tachometer with fuel level and engine temperature gauges on the sides. Some widget information can be displayed in the tachometer.
  • Sport : This view is designed for dynamic use and places a tachometer in the center of the display. The digital speedometer is centrally integrated into the tachometer. The view expands the space for widgets so more information can be displayed.
  • Tour : This view is intended for travel and displays a central navigation map with turn-by-turn arrows via Apple CarPlay or the integrated navigation system. Widget information can be displayed to the right of the map. If desired, the latter can be expanded to cover a larger part of the display area in full view.

High Contrast Mode : The driver can change the appearance of the display to extra high contrast mode. When Auto High Contrast Day/Night Mode is enabled, the display automatically switches between high contrast and dark mode depending on the ambient light.

Widgets : The driver can use the Trip Switch to select the widget to be displayed. Additionally, a “Blank” widget is provided for users who only want to display minimal content.

  • The cruise layout accommodates minimal widget information: compass, tire pressure monitoring system, outside temperature and range, trip meter A/B and average fuel consumption.

The Sport and Tour layouts offer more information options: tire pressure control system , target air pressure, trip meter A/B, compass, average speed, travel time, outside temperature, date, range, engine temperature and playlist or radio stations.

Harley-Davidson Ride Planner : The routes configured on the Harley-Davidson Ride Planner website can be transferred to the integrated navigation system using the HD app. The HD app also informs owners of any available firmware updates for their infotainment system.

The Motor Company is presenting the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide at the Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Festival, June 22-25 in Budapest, and at the Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival, June 13-25 on July 16, 2023 in Milwaukee, USA. Both models are expected to be available from August.

Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Highway King

Electra Glide Highway King from the Icons Collection!

The first feedback on the Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Highway King

Now that the dust and excitement has slowly settled, let's take a look at what Harley-Davidson presents to us here and what the initial feedback is. It actually starts out fun, the E-Glide could also be a Road King, it will definitely have touring qualities in its genes. It is only intended for a small target group; there are 1,750 of them worldwide, 750 of them in Hi-Fi Magenta and 1,000 in Hi-Fi Orange.

Retro charm meets high-tech: The new Icon Collection from Harley-Davidson

There are beauty shots of the bikes, but I still think that the bikes only really knock your socks off when you're standing in front of them. With the new model from the Icon Collection you are reviving the classic line. These are two really nice examples that are reminiscent of the nostalgic 60s. Harley-Davidson gave them the latest technology, the 114 engine is completely sufficient for the cruiser. The technical interior works with the reflex braking system, RDRS safety enhancements, cornering traction control, traction control and other current features.

Positive response for Electra Glide Revival and El Diablo.

When it comes to lighting technology, they probably didn't want to take the step to LED light, it's also difficult, on the one hand it's in demand, but it's not classic. Basically a successful throw from the company. The main thing is that they don't just disappear into some garage collection. I'm optimistic because you can already see the Electra Glide Revival and El Diablo driving around at the events. In any case, the feedback so far has been very positive.

The price makes it clear that the classic beauty is worth paying well for, but it is very limited.

Fast Johnnie Street Glide – Fast Johnnie Road Glide – Fast Johnnie Low Rider ST

Powerful muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s inspired the designers to create the look of the strictly limited machines

FRANKFURT (05/02/2023) - With the introduction of the Fast Johnnie paint design, Harley-Davidson celebrates the classic muscle cars and their racing history. In Europe, this styling is the basis for the Enthusiast Motorcycle Collection – strictly limited bikes that feature special paintwork and special graphics. The Enthusiast Motorcycle Collection Fast Johnnie paintwork in Celestial Blue with white race stripes will be offered ex works for three 2023 models: the Low Rider ST , the Street Glide ST and the Road Glide ST , the total production of which is limited to a maximum of 2,000 units worldwide .

The machines in the Enthusiast Motorcycle Collection pay homage to Harley-Davidson riders and are inspired by the stories of petrolheads. Fast Johnnie is a nod to the paint design found on high-performance muscle cars and pony cars of the 1960s and 1970s: contrasting race stripes on a bold base color combined with a special symbol or logo in the graphics. Both elements served to visually clearly differentiate the high-performance version of a car from its standard variant.

The Fast Johnnie symbol on the left side of the fuel tank is also found on the motorcycles of the Harley-Davidson Screamin' Eagle factory team that competes in the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers racing series. It goes back to a piglet named Johnnie, who was adopted in 1920 by Ray Weishaar, racing driver and member of the HD factory racing team called the Wrecking Crew, and made the team mascot. After winning races, Johnnie went on the victory lap with Ray on the tank of a racing machine. Hog, the English name for piglet, was transferred over time to Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

“Race stripes captivated the generation that grew up during this time and continue to captivate today,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of design and creative director . “The base color chosen for Fast Johnnie, Celestial Blue, is reminiscent of a popular paint color from the muscle car era. For the stripes we chose a white color that also fits the era perfectly and was alternately thin, wide and thin again on the sides and top of the machine - classic American.”

On the tank and front fender, the Harley-Davidson logo replaces one of the thin stripes. Depending on the model, the stripes were applied to the front and rear fenders, on the top and sides of the tank, on the front of the fairing and on the side covers and cases. Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide 2023
HARLEY-DAVIDSON INTRODUCES NEW CVO MODELS

HARLEY-DAVIDSON INTRODUCES NEW CVO MODELS

The strictly limited CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide will be presented at the Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Events in Budapest and Milwaukee in the middle of the year

FRANKFURT (04/26/2023) - Since 1999, Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) has been offering customers strictly limited edition machines that take performance, style, looks, craftsmanship and attention to detail to the extreme. Over the decades, Harley-Davidson designers and engineers have carefully developed and optimized these motorcycles to make every ride with them a unique experience while honoring the long history of the brand with its many style icons.

For 2023, Harley-Davidson presents two new CVO bikes that feature exclusive new design, advanced technology and dynamic performance.

“With the introduction of the new CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide, we have completely redesigned two of the most iconic Harley-Davidson models and in the process once again pushed the boundaries of CVO,” commented Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO of Harley-Davidson . “These are fundamentally new concepts that usher in a new era of innovation, design and technology. They take both the Custom Vehicle Operations products and the riding experience on a Grand American Touring Bike to a new level. The 2023 CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide set new standards for the ultimate Harley-Davidson riding experience.”

“The all-new yet unmistakably Harley design creates a smooth and dynamic visual flow from the front fender to the panniers,” said Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of design and creative director. “The look of the CVO Street Glide and CVO Road Glide represents evolution and is at the same time revolutionary because we have changed more visually than ever before. Like all Harley-Davidson motorcycles, these two new models are intended to convey timeless longing.”

The Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide

The newly designed batwing fairing of the CVO Street Glide now looks even more dynamic. Its windshield was angled more and the headlight with the bead underneath and the indicators were redesigned. Although the designers retained the classic T-shape, the silhouette now looks more modern. The fairing fits perfectly into the lines of the tank, side covers and cases. The new omega-shaped signature headlight and the indicators integrated into the side-mounted light strips ensure a high level of recognition.

The Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide

The new fairing of the CVO Road Glide represents an aggressive update of the previous sharknose design and fits harmoniously into the silhouette defined by the tank, side covers and cases. The wide LED headlight emphasizes the horizontal, but is visually reminiscent of the two elements that previously defined the style of the Sharknose fairings. The indicators have been integrated into the outer areas of the characteristic lighting fixture.

Features of both models:

  • New design
  • New Milwaukee-Eight VVT 121 engine
  • New chassis
  • New infotainment system
  • Two options for paint and finish

Details will be announced on June 7, 2023. Further information is available online at hd.com/ourfutureisreal .

CVO Harley-Davidson 2023
Harley-Davidson will introduce the new 2023 CVO models in June

Harley-Davidson will introduce the new 2023 CVO models in June

Harley-Davidson will introduce the new CVO models on June 7, 2023.

New design, new multi-information display, chassis and 121 cubic inch with new technology are the highlights known so far.

New 121cui V2 engine with variable valve timing

I'm really looking forward to the performance development of the new engine. I expect a lot more performance, especially in the upper range. But it doesn't just provide performance, the power has to be brought to the road somehow. In the first shots you can see the new upside down fork at the front, but what happens at the back isn't really clear yet. You can't see anything in the drawings, it could be that they use a monoshock system, if things get really bad, with Nivomat. I'm really excited about that.

The new LED lighting design on the Road Glide CVO and Street Glide CVO immediately catches the eye.

What will certainly cause the most excitement is the new multifunctional instrument display. That looks great, but customers should also be able to cope with the digital offer. I'm very excited to see the first reactions. It is certainly right that they are taking this new path.

The premiere is on June 7, 2023, more information will follow.

Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary models
ARE THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON 120TH ANNIVERSARY MODELS COMING NOW?

ARE THE HARLEY-DAVIDSON 120TH ANNIVERSARY MODELS COMING NOW?

Yes, where are they?

The Harley-Davidson anniversary models were spectacularly announced on January 18, 2023, but they cannot be seen yet. The following information has been received in my message center so far. They are on the way, the first ones are said to have already reached Europe, and they have to, otherwise the large-scale 120th Anniversary presentation, which will take place on April 29, 2023 at many of the Harley-Davidson dealers, will probably cause a lot of trouble. Some dealers have scheduled this special 120th Anniversary Open House day for May 6th. From what we hear, they are on the rise, but it will still be a tight box.

The anniversary paint set has Art

It's probably not about buying, but you have to see the devices. The paintwork looks really good, I was able to admire a Road Glide Special Anniversary in Dortmund and basically didn't take a good photo of it out of excitement.

120th Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special 2023

Are the 120th Anniversary models already available somewhere?

Road Glide Special Anniversary in Germany , as far as I know. Heritage 120th Anniversary in Budapest , which is the promo bike that they giving away for the 120th Anniversary Festival in Budapest .

The English are even said to have one of the Anniversary Road Glide CVO 117 versions, which was briefly seen at the motorcycle trade fair in Prague. She will definitely be back in England now.

Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Road Glide Limited CVO 2023

Limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide

Which models are available in the 120th Anniversary version?

If we don't include the double-limited CVO model with the special, special Eagle special paint, Harley-Davidson has provided six models with the 120-year anniversary paint. They are all limited, only the units are different for some model versions.

120TH TRI GLIDE ULTRA ANNIVERSARY – 1100 COPIES

1,100 models of the Tri Glide Ultra Anniversary available worldwide . I'm curious whether we'll even see one of her in Germany. The Tri Glide Ultra is particularly popular in the USA. That's no surprise, it will be an ideal companion, especially on long journeys. When I think of the long highways in the USA, I can understand the American bikers who let the wind blow in their faces on the Tri GLide Ultra and tour very comfortably at the same time.

I haven't ridden it yet, but I know from friends that they originally wanted to ride a Tri Glide because they didn't have a motorcycle license, so that they could switch to a motorcycle later when they had the license in their pocket. They still drive Tri Glide today, but not because they have to, but because they want to, it can work that way too.

120TH ULTRA LIMITED ANNIVERSARY – 1300 COPIES

The Ultra Limited anniversary model is limited to just 1300 units worldwide. This is also particularly rare. Harley-Davidson has only released four pictures of the great tourer, as it offers a particularly large amount of space for the Heirloom Fade 120th Anniversary paint set .

120th STREET GLIDE SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY – 1600 COPIES

The Street Glide Special Anniversary is certainly the TOP seller among the anniversary models. The Street and Road Glide Special models both have a “Black Trim” design. The engine, exhaust system, fork and many other parts are jet black. I've already been able to see the Road Glide live, it's a feast for the eyes!

120TH ROAD GLIDE SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY – 1600 COPIES

It could be seen live at the “Motorräder Dortmund” motorcycle trade fair. That was the premiere in Germany, there is nothing more to see of her to date. But that will slowly change from mid-April. The Road Glide Special Anniversary also has a “Black Trim” design, which suits it really well. The Road Glide Special, or the Road Glide ST with 117 engine, are generally great tourers, although my favorite are the ST models that I drove last year.

120TH HERITAGE CLASSIC ANNIVERSARY – 1700 COPIES

The Heritage Classic is generally a very confident and good bike from Harley-Davidson. It can somehow do everything, is very easy to handle, has pressure from the basement and, above all, it is suitable for long distances.

Here you can find my 10,000 kilometer driving report for the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic 114

Its light output with the LED headlights is brilliant, its design is a matter of taste, but in terms of driving and seating characteristics, it is certainly one of the best in the Harley-Davidson portfolio! It's certainly not without reason that there are 1,700 copies of it! It has a “Chrome Finish” design, which suits it very well.

One of the heritage models is already in Budapest, and anyone who takes part in the raffle at the 120th Anniversary Festival in Budapest can win it with a bit of luck.

120TH FAT BOY 114 ANNIVERSARY – 3000 COPIES

There are 3,000 of the Fat Boy 114 Anniversary It is the fastest standard Harley with the Milwaukee-Eight engine and only slows down to 190 km/h, which many people don't even know. But Harley-Davidson has never really been about speed. It has very good straight-line stability and its 240 mm rear wheel sits firmly on the road; you only have to really push it in when it goes into a curve. It wants to be driven and doesn't drive itself. You could say that the Fat Boy is a bit stubborn in this regard, but if you pull the Fat Boy nicely out of the curve, it's fun.

Also read my Denmark tour report with the Fat Boy 114

120th MotorClothes Fashion Collection

The 120th MotorClothes Fashion Collection, on the other hand, is already available, the starting price for the Anniversary T-shirt is €54, if you are one of the slim ones, more fabric costs more money! The fuller ones among us pay €65 for the optically identical anniversary T-shirt. For ladies, the Anniversary T-shirts start at €47 for XS and €58 for 3W. There are nice things there, but you really have to want it.

In any case, the Harley-Davidson anniversary is the big topic this year, and the highlight will be the festival in Budapest. I'm really looking forward to it, many of you are planning really nice tours there, which is sometimes not so easy when the groups suddenly become larger than initially thought. Sometimes you have to know exactly which route you want to take if you plan to stay overnight and suddenly you need 10 rooms, if possible in the same hotel.

Stopover in Dresden

A tip would be to stop in Dresden, there is the beer garden Schillergarten , where many Harley bikers will meet, you just shouldn’t overdo it if you want to continue driving towards Budapest the next day 🙂 .

Check out my tips for the Budapest tour and remember to check with your insurance company whether you have an Eastern Europe clause in your contract!

First tour tips for the 120th Harley-Davidson Anniversary Festival in Budapest 2023

Otherwise, everything has been said, we are looking forward to a great 2023 season and if Harley-Davidson gives us such a good celebration template, we'll all be happy to celebrate with you!

LEAKED – HARLEY-DAVIDSON CVO MODELS 2023

LEAKED – HARLEY-DAVIDSON CVO MODELS 2023

There is new information about the Harley-Davidson CVO models 2023

The possible Harley-Davidson CVO models Road Glide CVO and Street Glide CVO have already appeared on the web this month. The pictures make a real impression, but what is a bit surprising is that the pictures were apparently leaked directly from the production facility at the Harley-Davidson factory in York, Pennsylvania, USA.

When I think about what an alarm was at Harley-Davidson when I found Low Rider S 117 It is assumed that they were employees from an external service company who actually had no business in this area of production. This can sometimes be expensive; external companies usually sign a confidentiality clause.

New 121cui V2 engine and a new multifunctional instrument display

First there were only the two models with the 121 cui engine TheFastLaneGarage proper_baggers .

New LED lighting technology and one of the highlights will be the new BoomBox, or whatever you call it, because its appearance looks like a new and multifunctional instrument display. Harley-Davidson will certainly take the following approach and integrate the tried and tested speedometer displays into the new and huge screen.

Harley-Davidson CVO models 2023

The question will be what happens to the Rockford Fosgate Stage I Power system. The system would then have to work together with the new command center. They don't want it to deteriorate, the system already makes a lot of sound. The touring screen could be electrically adjustable, but it doesn't really look finished in the photos.

New 121cui V2 engine with variable valve timing

The 121 cui engine will almost certainly have variable valve timing, the rumor has been around for a long time. Thanks to variable valve control, I expect a new and outstanding performance in the upper speeds compared to the 117cui. Although I think the 117cui is really strong, it's well tuned and a lot of fun, more displacement wouldn't be absolutely necessary, with just under 2 liters you're actually doing well. A very good sign is that Harley-Davidson is further developing the now highly rated Milwaukee-Eight engine.

Will the CVO models get a new chassis in 2023?

If I now put two and two together and see the new upside down fork in the photos, the large brake discs where Brembo will do its work, there may be a surprise in the entire chassis. That would of course be a blast if they finally stepped up their game here. Why not install a Nivomat, like Wilbers successfully demonstrated.

CVO Limited is scheduled to be there again in 2023.

CVO Limited is considered set , but some are expected again this year. My price forecast for the Street and Road Glide models is around €49,950. If they bring a completely new design, plus the refreshed engine, new chassis, new multifunctional instrument display, then my guess is definitely not far off. The 2022 CVO models were available from €44,995, plus construction fee, etc. The other side is, with all these innovations, it is certainly easier to buy if you get one of them. The CVO models are not expected in large numbers this year, which is nothing unusual.

When will Harley-Davidson introduce the CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations) models?

And when will Harley-Davidson present Harley-Davidson CVO models Presumably it will work out so that they will bring down the curtain on the 120th Anniversary Party in Milwaukee. I can well imagine that they will lead the parade with the CVO and the 120th Anniversary models, it couldn't be easier to send pictures around the world.

Here in Germany I wouldn't expect them before July/August. Another interesting question is whether it says “Made in USA” or “Made in Thailand”. It can no longer be ruled out that the capacities will sometimes be distributed between both countries.

If you ask a mechanic now, you'll hear that they do very good and precise work in Thailand, but it's more about the image and whether it bothers you if the CVO doesn't come from the USA. Nowadays it probably doesn't matter anyway when you see where all the parts are delivered from. That's what a global market brings with it and if another big steamer gets stuck in the Suez Canal, nobody in either country will put together a Harley-Davidson anymore.

Blog – The 2023 Harley-Davidson highlights of the presentation

Harley-Davidson presented the first highlights from the 2023 model year this week. The presentation via YouTube was over after 18:03 minutes; in the first few minutes they summarized a few really beautiful moments from Harley-Davidson's 120-year history. I would interpret the motto as capturing moments that will never return. A few sequences weren't particularly exciting; the presentation of the Anniversary MotorClothes collection could have been made a little nicer.

No special backdrop that surrounds the product with an attractive frame. You can already tell that they are saving money, especially in the media sector. The sound players during the driving recordings are really horrible, that has nothing to do with legal systems, they don't even sound that bad in the original. The times are over when well-known photographers such as Michael Lichter or Mark Harmer were responsible for the particularly beautiful images.

2023 Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary Models

The real highlight is the Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Limited 120th Anniversary 2023

We're talking about Harley-Davidson motorcycles here, I won't talk about prices anymore. If you want to ride a Harley-Davidson, you just have to know that you have to bring enough money with you before you get the keys from the dealer and can drive out of the yard.

The question about a discount will come to nothing, because especially with such special designs, you have to apply in order to get one. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but with this special model we are talking about a CVO of which there will only be 1500 units. Especially with this one, not every authorized dealer gets one delivered.

2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary
2023 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary

The CVO Road Glide Limited 120th Anniversary 2023 is already limited as a normal CVO, in the 120th version it is now even doubly limited and numbered. If we want to talk about the price, at least for her, in order to be able to assess the matter a little better, we are talking about €59,995, plus the transport and installation fee and a special surcharge. So it looks like if you live in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the prices are a lot higher, but you can't blame Harley-Davidson for that.

But one thing is clear: when you stand in front of her, you are illuminated by the paint, the elaborate decorative stitching in the seat, or the eagle on the fairing, plus emblems and yes, in front of you there is a real Harley ship. I see it in front of me, with a slightly smoky tinted window, this whole structure is quite violent. But the money, oh I didn't want to talk about money.

The Harley-Davidson 120th Anniversary models

You definitely have to see the paint live! One might think that the El Diablo Low Rider ST 117, with its similar red paintwork, was a teaser for the Anniversary models. Now we suddenly have a few more particularly red ones in the stable, which was previously a unique selling point for the El Diablo. It won't hurt her because there is no Low Rider ST 117 as an Anniversary model.

My favorites include the Fat Boy and the Street Glide. Everyone installed the 114 cubic inch engine, and one would have wished for a displacement upgrade to 120cui, just because of the anniversary. But that's not possible, because something was still missing from the presentation.

When are the other CVO Harley-Davidson models coming?

In my opinion, the CVO Road Glide Limited Anniversary will have a special position, perhaps it will even remain unique as an Anniversary version. In any case, Harley-Davidson is keeping a huge secret about the 2023 CVO models. My guess is that they will unveil them in Milwaukee at the homecoming event. Otherwise, we wish Hilmar and his wife a lot of fun in Milwaukee, he won the Europe-wide HD Homecoming competition and will be there.

Harley-Davidson Sportster Nightster and Nightster Special 975T

Sportster Nightster

They have a difficult inheritance to take on, it doesn't help, they have to get over this hurdle. For 2023, the Nightster has been slimmed down a bit, not in weight, it still weighs approx. 221kg when ready to drive. The headlight cover has been removed and is only available in the two paint finishes Vivid Black & Redline Red (surcharge €280). It has been given a new headlight design, the Bar&Shield logo is now emblazoned on the airbox (airbox = visually the tank, the actual tank is under the seat) and a newly styled seat cover can be found on the new 2023 model.

Basically it is not an entry-level model, after all it has 90 hp and almost 1000 cubic meters. Thanks to the adjustable driving mode, it can be easily adjusted even for inexperienced users at the push of a button.

2023 Sportster Nightster Harley-Davidson
2023 Sportster Nightster Harley-Davidson

Sportster Nightster Special

The Sportster Nightster Special is brand new, it comes with a lamp cover, TFT display and it is already a two-seater ex works. Harley-Davidson offers the Nightster Special in four colors. The TFT display is similarly extensive as on the Sportster S with navigation, where the information is displayed on the TFT screen in combination with the Harley-Davidson app. Status information includes front and rear tire air pressure, engine temperature, oil pressure, battery voltage and diagnostic codes.

Unusually for this class, cruise control is already installed as standard. The Sportster Nightster and the Nightster Special both have the safety features of TCS traction control, which prevents the wheels from spinning, especially in wet conditions, and DSCS, drag torque control, which prevents a sudden breakaway if the driver makes a misgear.

2023 Sportster Nightster Harley-Davidson

The Breakout 117 model year 2023

The new Breakout 117 is also a highlight alongside the CVO. It's not just the large 117 cui engine with 1,923 cm 3 and 101 hp that is very well received by the fan community, it's also the now larger 18.9 liter tank that immediately catches the eye. The Heavy Breather air filter with the 117 emblem was installed and the handlebars are now 19mm higher.

From summer onwards, electronic traction control will be available as an option for the Breakout 117. A 21 inch wheel with 26 spokes is installed at the front. What is immediately noticeable is that it only has one brake disc at the front, which could be criticized. The right view of the Breakout is clearly its sugar side and so the spoked wheel can be seen dominantly. The new Breakout will be available in four colors: Vivid Black, Black Denim, Baja Orange, Atlas Silver Metallic.

2023 Freewheeler Harley-Davidson

The highlight in the niche

The Freewheeler from Harley-Davidson is not necessarily a box office hit here in Europe, but things are different in the USA. In any case, the Freewheeler is really successful, especially with this view. The rear looks really good and the 18 inch spoke wheels are just great, even the color comes across well. I've never ridden a freewheeler, but if I didn't have a motorcycle license, that would be an option.

40 years of Harley Owners Group

The Harley Owners Group has been around for 40 years now. At the beginning of the 1990s there were already more than a quarter of a million members worldwide, and in 2006 the HOG broke the million mark. Today there are more than 1,350 HOG chapters worldwide, connecting millions of Harley lovers and like-minded people.

The first international HOG event in Europe took place in Cheltenham (Great Britain) in 1991, and shortly afterwards around 3,500 members came together in Alsace in France.

Homecoming event in Milwaukee 2023

Two top bands are expected in Milwaukee this year for the homecoming event. Green Day will headline an evening show on Friday, July 14th. Foo Fighters will headline Saturday, July 15th.

Also performing this weekend are Cody Jinks, Social Distortion, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Phantogram, White Reaper, and KennyHoopla. Veterans Park also hosts a family-friendly festival during the day that includes music, entertainment, activities and a variety of dining options. The 120th Anniversary Event will take place at various locations throughout Milwaukee. It is the legendary place where the story of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company began in 1903.

The Harley-Davidson Museum serves as a central gathering point for free events. The 20-acre campus will host free live music, food and beverage offerings and other attractions. The museum is generally accessible during the event. The weekend's festivities will conclude on Sunday with a motorcycle parade through Milwaukee.

Homecoming event will be celebrated every year in Milwaukee

Jochen Zeitz announced in the presentation that they would like to celebrate the event in Milwaukee every year in the future. He makes it clear how important these events are for the Harley-Davidson Company when Number-One now takes place permanently in the place where it all began.

120th Harley-Davidson Anniversary Party in Budapest

There is great interest in the event in Budapest. The initial problems with purchasing tickets have now been resolved. In any case, until before Christmas, the British Harley fans were still far ahead of us in terms of ticket sales, but we Germans have now overtaken them; tens of thousands of Harley bikers from all over Europe are expected in Budapest. The music program will have something for everyone with around 50 bands, the biggest highlight will certainly be the countless Harleys themselves who will take over Budapest and the surrounding area for the weekend.

The conclusion

It was already announced at the end of 2022 that prices would rise, although not officially, but it was clear that it would happen. It may not be the real problem in the upper segment, but Harley-Davidson still hasn't delivered a real Harley-Davidson entry-level model for the 2023 model year. Harley-Davidson is currently asking €16,095 for the Sportster Nightster.

It has to be said that with its 975cm 3 it is actually not a small machine and therefore there is still no replacement for the Iron 883 or Forty-Eight, which should be in the price segment of 12,000 to 13,000 euros. Many of those who started were those who moved up to the next class two or three years later. Something else is supposed to come this year, let's see if there's anything from the small models too.
