HD CONNECT IS DISCONTINUED - IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HARLEY INSURANCE

IMPORTANT INFO FOR HD CONNECT OWNERS

UPDATE from August 12, 2020 at the end of the post

It's not that easy to find out the reasons behind switching off HD Connect, but intensive and international research sheds a little light on the matter.

On August 31, 2020, HD Connect will be discontinued on Touring models

According to previous information, Harley-Davidson has a problem with data protection with the HD Connect software. This problem has arisen more in the USA, where a customer appears to have taken legal action, which can result in severe penalties in the States.

This may have been the reason why the APP service service will be switched off for all Harley-Davidson touring models from August 31, 2020.

DATA CANNOT BE DELETED

The problem is that not all data can actually be deleted when a vehicle is sold. Based on all the information, the computer calculates, for example, the range to the destination and can make a location query or, thanks to the combination with GPS, display a warning on the APP in the event of theft. These and many other data can be combined to create a profile picture of the user.

It is currently not possible to completely delete this data from the chip when a new assignment is made. If we're honest, it's the same data that every cell phone can store today. In any case, it's a real problem for Harley-Davidson right now that they can't get solved at the moment.

However, according to Harleysite information, it is not ruled out that HD Connect will be started again if the data protection problems can be solved. One reason why a solution to the problem is required is the LIVEWIRE, because the APP needs it to display charging stations and many other features are carried out in combination with HD Connect.

HARLEY INSURANCE – WHAT TO DO?

When we asked Harley-Davidson Insurance how they are now dealing with the issue, the following is important information for customers who own a Harley-Davidson with the HD Connect service.

Harley-Davidson Kohl - Aachen Winter Sale

With Harley-Davidson Insurance you have the option of taking advantage of a GPS discount through the integrated HD Connect when you sign the contract. Anyone who has taken advantage of the 5% discount must take action now; there are no other effects on the premium.

GPS brought 5% discount

When signing the contract, Harley-Davidson Insurance pointed out, especially for customers who received the discount due to HD Connect, which is only free in the first year from Harley-Davidson, that you have to say whether you will continue to pay for the service Harley-Davidson takes advantage of it or not. In the following year you should decide whether you want to continue using the service, which would make sense given the 5% saved on the comprehensive insurance premium. The GPS system from Harley-Davidson meets all the requirements for the discount granted. If you now want to look elsewhere for a replacement GPS system, you must pay attention to the insurer's requirements.

Further information about the GPS conditions can be found at the following link on the Harley-Davidson Insurance .

The customer has to take action himself!

If you have taken advantage of the GPS discount in conjunction with the HD Connect service, you must take action yourself and inform your insurance company that your GPS security feature will be deactivated from September 1, 2020. The 5% will then lead to a recalculation of the contract from September, which is annoying for the customer. However, Harley-Davidson's hands seem to be tied so far and the fact that they have to find a solution for the future gives hope that this situation is only temporary.

The discount information is from Harley-Davidson Insurance , how other insurers handle it, if you are insured elsewhere, you must definitely ask. You should definitely inform your insurer if the GPS system no longer works from September and you have therefore taken advantage of premium discounts.

INFO UPDATE August 12, 2020

According to new information, Harley-Davidson is still working on a solution to keep HD Connect running. It could be that the APP will continue to run in a scaled-down form from September 1, 2020. However, this information has not yet been confirmed. So far, Harley-Davidson has announced that the operation of HD Connect for the tourers will be completely discontinued by August 31, 2020. The legitimate question so far has been why the LiveWire service remains active. The problem is supposed to be solved by disabling some functions. This information is not yet valid; there is still very little background information known about it.
