Motorcycle accident in Ratingen
On Sunday we received a sad report from the police in Ratingen - Mettmann district. And it took a while because the question arose as to whether such a post with these photos should even be published. We all know that motorcycling is what it is, but nothing happens to you anytime, anywhere. However, we can minimize the risks and that's why we see this article as prevention, which is why these sad pictures were made available to us by the police. Check your helmets at the beginning of the season and replace them if necessary!
An actually unspectacular situation
The Harley driver braked when turning on the still dry road because of a car in front of him, so we're obviously not talking about really high speeds here. Now look at his helmet in the photo, that's the really shocking reason why we want to use this as an opportunity to encourage you to check your helmets.
Some types of helmets should definitely be replaced every three years.
When it comes to helmets, it's about the manufacturing process in which, for example, thermoplastic or thermoset is used. The helmets are manufactured in an injection mold and heated with plastic granules and put into the mold.
Now it depends on which materials are also processed as fabric. It can be fiberglass, carbon and other fabric structures that are primarily intended to prevent sharp objects from penetrating.
After three years, the materials of the cheaper versions age and lose strength. As a rule, helmets made from thermoset plastic are protected from aging for longer because the coating prevents temperature influences caused by heat and UV radiation, but they also cost three times as much. You should keep an eye on whether the helmet meets the ECE standard 22/05; get the right advice.
Whether you wear a cheap helmet or an expensive one, you should definitely make sure that it is not damaged and after three years at the latest, at least replace the cheap helmet. Because as you can see in the photo, his helmet literally burst and in the end it probably cost him his life.
Take this to heart and think about it, it doesn't have to be the most expensive, but only the driver should get old, not the helmet!
We wish the relatives a lot of strength and heartfelt condolences during this time.
