Old versus new – my old gray rag…
I did it, I hope you all know that after a sliding scale depending on your date of birth, the driving license has to be exchanged for the new card driving license. I struggled for a long time to exchange the old gray rag for the new driver's license with an expiry date. But abroad, or when renting, they look at you strangely when you present them with a document from the 80s.
the police have never really checked me abroad. I have a trip to the USA coming up, which is why I also got an international driving license. It is only valid in conjunction with my current driving license and is more of an aid to communication. There are countries such as the USA and Canada where, if you check with this document, you could move on more quickly because the document is easier to understand.
In Kentucky, Georgia and Florida people pay particular attention to an English translation. In general, before traveling to non-EU countries, you should find out what the requirements are for driving a vehicle if you want to drive in that country. Now my gray rag is history.
Notice
Whether gray rag, pink cardboard or white plastic card: By 2033, every driving license that was issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license. This happens gradually.
For what reason is the exchange taking place?
According to the Third EU Driving License Directive, all car and motorcycle driving licenses that were issued before January 19, 2013 must be exchanged for the new EU driving license by January 19, 2033. This is intended to ensure that all driving licenses still in circulation in the EU receive a uniform and forgery-proof model.
For driving licenses issued by December 31, 1998, the year of birth of the license holder is decisive:
- before 1953: Exchange until January 19, 2033
- 1953 to 1958: Exchange by January 19th 2022
- 1959 to 1964: Exchange until January 19, 2023
- 1965 to 1970: Exchange until January 19, 2024
- 1971 or later: Exchange by January 19, 2025
For driving licenses issued from January 1, 1999, the year of issue of the driving license (*) applies:
- 1999 to 2001: Exchange until January 19, 2026
- 2002 to 2004: Exchange until January 19, 2027
- 2005 to 2007: Exchange until January 19, 2028
- 2008: Exchange until January 19, 2029
- 2009: Exchange until January 19, 2030
- 2010: Exchange until January 19, 2031
- 2011: Exchange until January 19, 2032
- 2012 to January 18, 2013: Exchange until January 19, 2033
(*) Driver's license holders whose year of birth is before 1953 must exchange their license by January 19, 2033, regardless of the year the license was issued.
Is the motorcycle license also limited?
The same exchange periods apply to motorcycle licenses as to car licenses. In the future, it must also be extended every 15 years at the latest. A further test or a health certificate is also not required.
