Hamburg Harley Days - What was supposed to be a relaxed weekend...
The Hamburg Harley Days 2025 were well on their way to being a complete success. Full streets, a good atmosphere, test rides, new models - everything was just right. But just before the finish line, many bikers were abruptly thwarted. Police checks directly at the entrance to the event site caused frustration - and raised questions.

Anyone who has experienced this knows that this is not how a good day starts. What happened there? And above all - why?
Things got serious just before the entrance to the event site. Blue lights, barriers, checkpoints - exactly where you actually want to roll towards Harley Village in a relaxed mood. Instead of anticipation, there was control and question marks. What happened there didn't seem like an individual decision - but rather like a measure with an announcement.
It's not the organizer's fault - that has to be made clear.
The Hamburg Harley Days 2025 were basically a successful event. Good organization, full streets, great test rides with the new models - even CO2-neutral with eFuels refueled. Harley-Davidson has shown here how seriously they take the issue of sustainability. But the atmosphere at the entrance? That was in the toilet.
Rigorous controls - but why?
Harley riders were specifically waved out. It wasn't a matter of arbitrary random checks - there was selection. Was this a politically ordered measure? Many people who were there are asking themselves this question. Because we're not talking about a problem event here, but a peaceful, international motorcycle meeting. In any case, the effort was unusually high in relation to the number of visitors.

Were these measures justified at all?
The police can carry out so-called event-related traffic measures at major events. The idea behind this is to intervene in a targeted manner if there are specific indications of danger - such as illegal races, violent groups or technical manipulations that pose a safety risk. But the Hamburg Harley Days? This is a peaceful biker event with decades of tradition.
Whether such measures can be applied to this event at all is more than questionable. The vast majority of people who come with their Harley want exactly one thing! To spend a weekend with like-minded people - legally, openly, without stress. The fact that motorcycles were specifically stopped, checked and in individual cases seized in this context may be formally covered.
But! 30 seized Harleys out of several thousand participants - is that proportionate?
If an entire control apparatus is ramped up in order to take 30 vehicles out of circulation at the end, the result is disproportionate to the effort involved. This may be done if there are concrete indications of large-scale manipulation or danger. But if the measure mainly ensures that visitors feel deterred and organizers ask themselves whether it is still worthwhile at all - then the effect is counterproductive.
Bad timing - bad effect
Anyone traveling by Harley wants to experience it! The atmosphere in the city, the music, the bikes, the people. But if you first have to go through a measure that is more of a deterrent than a protection, the day is over. And if we end up saying: „We're not going back next year“, then those who may have intended that will have won. That must not happen.
One look at the station is enough
While checks are carried out at the entrance to the event, things look very different a few hundred meters further on at the main station. That's where the city's real problems lie - and everyone knows it. The fact that motorcyclists of all people are being targeted seems like a symbol of political double standards.
Harley-Davidson is further ahead than Hamburg thinks
While some politicians in Hamburg are dreaming green and red, Harley-Davidson has long been riding electrically, efficiently - and also CO2-neutrally.
The fact that the test drives with eFuels went through the city with a full tank of gas, hardly anyone has it on their radar. It is telling how little idea some decision-makers have of the reality on two wheels. While politicians regulate, ban and harass, they lose touch with reality on the road. You can see this in a half-closed road on the Reeperbahn, from which cyclists are now supposed to ride.
More traffic jams, more exhaust fumes, more downtime, loss of time! None of this has anything to do with reality. The aim must be to get the traffic out of the area as quickly as possible and not to slow it down.
My thought
I am curious to see whether Harley-Davidson will officially comment on the incidents - I have heard from internal circles that this is being discussed. But one thing is clear! If we allow this piece of freedom to be taken away from us, we will lose more than just an event weekend in Hamburg.
I have already reported on the topic of eFuels in 2022!
