Review – Mallorca Bike Week 2022

The best comes at the end

The 16th Mallorca Bike Week in November impressed with wonderful tours and wonderful sunshine. During the varied evening program at the Robinson Club Cala Serena there was an exuberant atmosphere, even in the toilet...

It couldn't have been arranged better, but it happened by chance: 11 black trucks pulled off the ferry in Palma early in the morning, just as the sun appeared on the horizon and bathed the already impressive picture in brilliant golden light. The black column was led by the brand new Harley-Davidson show truck, with the Kenworth tractor that Liam Neeson already drove in the action thriller “The Ice Road”. Even a photographer as experienced as Ben Ott was left with words of excitement with every click, and the first film sequences for the MBW Video 2022 took on a Hollywood character in two senses.

The sun stayed. At a pleasant 24 or 25 degrees in the shade, you could drive in leather without sweating, but with the ventilation slits wide open, for example to Cap Formentor, down to Sa Calobra, the Orient Tour Cala Torta or to the beautiful bays of Andratx. And you can do this either alone, in your own groups or under the local and expert guidance of the SKS tour guides, who are professional drivers who move their heavy 40-ton trucks in their everyday lives, but who all also feel at home on a motorcycle.

The latter was in high demand from participants and the guided tours were regularly fully booked. This was probably because SKS Reisen was able to welcome a particularly large number of new customers to the legendary end of the season on the island this year. Accordingly, two so-called “first offender tours” were scheduled for Sunday. Under the leadership of the managing SKS partners, Adrian Kießling on the one hand and Kevin Kießling on the other, the nearest gas stations were driven to on beautiful country roads in front of the front door, staggered group driving was practiced and the necessary safety instructions were given.

On the second day of the event, all tours led to the same destination: Es Forti. An 18th-century fortress with walls up to six meters thick, built on a 500-meter-long headland to secure the harbor in Cala Llonga Bay. No fewer than seven groups, each with a front and back guide from SKS, ended their day tour here and numerous self-organized groups of experienced “repeat offenders” completed the impressive rally.

The Robinson Club treated everyone who arrived to a full-blown barbecue right on the forecourt of the fortress, with a fantastic view of the sea included. At the grill tongs was none other than Klaus Breinig, WBQA Grill World Champion from 2017 and World BBQ Champion 2018, who many knew from his numerous television appearances.

Parallel to the trips to the most beautiful places on the island, a “Young Generation Tour” was organized for participants under 40 on Tuesday. Fortunately, this community continues to grow as the people of the Westerwald travel. This may be due, on the one hand, to the fact that Kim Hummerich and her brother, Kevin Kießling, both managing directors in the SKS Group, themselves belong to this group of people, and, on the other hand, to the fact that more and more regular travelers are now bringing their adult children with them. The theme of the day was, fittingly, “Electro.”

When we returned to the Plaza Mayor in the club, we could hear very atypical, modern sounds and of course there were also some live wires at the start of the tour itself. This included the well-known “Clubwire” from Harley-Factory Frankfurt, which was personally driven around the curves by the managing director, Angelo Pagano. Audience and participants enjoyed both. The “YoungGenTour” ended with a professional photo shoot right by the sea. Here, all riders were able to have Ben Ott and Anna Gala take a perfect holiday memory with their bikes in optimal light.

The day ended with the legendary toilet party. Created almost by accident years ago, it has now achieved cult status, mainly, but not exclusively, among the younger generation. With dim lighting and strong drinks, inhibitions fell in sync with the quality of the music. The mood and exuberance of the celebrants were exactly the opposite. So it was not surprising that numerous motorcycles were used later the next day, in some cases not at all, and were exchanged for massage or sauna benches in the wellness area.

Those who had politely listened to the excellent blues band with their powerful vocalist the evening before were already back on their bikes by this time. It was important to take advantage of the weather and explore the beauty of the island with its curves to the north and west. I was drawn to the tour all the way north to Cap Formentor with Anna Gala as backseater, who tried to get as many passengers as possible in front of the lens. A beautiful, relaxed ride that rewarded you with plenty of curves and wonderful views in the “Reserva natural de s'Albufereta” before and after the cape. Back at the club, we parked our motorcycles directly in the central square next to the beer stand that had been set up especially for us and learned there that we were not the only enthusiasts who had found beautiful destinations and curves.

After dinner we went to the open-air block party in the club's courtyard, which was decorated with fire barrels and numerous Harley-Davidson memorabilia. Jill Fisher and her band also heated up the audience with cover rock and even gently forced Kevin Kießling to “vote”. You might expect from a four-star club that the mattresses are comfortable, the food is great and the staff are friendly, but the tailor-made evening program for this particular clientele is top class.

This also included the “Nervlings”, Moira and Tom, who entertained the audience on Thursday evening with their unique musical talent. On the last evening, the program culminated in an emotional farewell in the theater, during which Ben Ott showed a short rough cut of his film documentary. Afterwards, a 70s disco revue was premiered before the laser show at the pool area brought the evening to a close . The mix of fantastic motorcycle tours, parties with always excellent live music, the amenities of a first-class club complex and the organizers' all-round carefree package are probably the secret of the success of the Mallorca Bike Week and make it the largest of its kind in Europe. It was not without reason that it took place for the 16th time in November. I'm already looking forward to next year.
