What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

Waterproof, water-repellent, and water-resistant are three common adjectives used to describe motorcycle pants. But what exactly is the difference? Waterproof means that the material is so dense that no water can pass through it. This keeps you dry, no matter how long you are out in the rain.

With truly waterproof pants, only the surface gets wet. On the inside, however, you stay permanently dry thanks to the built-in c_change® membrane. Water-repellent, on the other hand, sometimes also referred to as waterproof, only means that water beads up on the surface. In continuous or heavy rain, however, it is inevitable that water will penetrate the pants over time.

WHEN IS WATERPROOF WATERPROOF?

The hydrostatic water column refers to the height of a theoretical water column pressing down on a fabric surface and is measured in millimeters. The water column therefore indicates the water pressure that the outer material of motorcycle pants can withstand before water penetrates. The specification refers to the pressure that is present when the first drops penetrate the fabric. It thus marks the load limit at which a textile becomes permeable.

1,000 millimeters WS corresponds to a pressure of approximately 0.1 bar. According to the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (EMPA) in St. Gallen, fabrics with a water column of 4,000 millimeters or more are considered waterproof. The Revolution leans from ROKKER even achieves a water column of up to 20,000 millimeters in this test.
