New rules 2025 | This is what Harley riders need to know about motorcycle tires

What the new regulations mean for Harley riders and what you need to pay attention to when choosing tires in the future!

The topic of motorcycle tires is an important point, especially for Harley-Davidson drivers, in order to ensure the best possible driving experience and the necessary safety on the road. However, with the new regulations from 2025, motorcycle owners who want to adapt their tires will have to take a few changes into account. What was previously possible with a simple certificate of non-objection (UBB) will, from next year in Germany, only be permitted through acceptance and registration with the testing center. This article explains what is changing and what motorcyclists should know to ensure compliant tires in the future.

Harley Factory Group 2022

The previous regulations until the end of 2024

Until now, in Germany it was possible to use a clearance certificate (UBB) to drive tires that do not exactly correspond to the entries in the registration certificate. Many Harley riders have used this option, for example to install wider tires or specific tire models that better suit their needs and motorcycle style. This worked as long as the tire manufacturer confirmed through UBB that it was safe to install on the respective type of motorcycle.

The UBB was considered sufficient proof that the tires fitted did not pose any safety risks, even if they did not correspond to the motorcycle manufacturer's specifications. An additional trip to the TÜV or the testing organization was not necessary as long as the UBB was carried. But this flexibility will end with the new regulations from January 2025.

From 2025: Mandatory TÜV inspection for tire deviations

From January 1, 2025, it will no longer be possible to drive simply by carrying a clearance certificate if the tires differ from the entries in the vehicle documents. The previous regulation is being replaced by a stricter requirement: All tires that do not exactly correspond to the registered specifications must now be approved and registered by an official testing organization such as TÜV or DEKRA.

This step is mandatory if the tires differ from the original in size, tread depth or other technical details. Simply submitting a UBB is no longer sufficient in these cases. The change is intended to ensure uniform regulation and ensure that all tires meet the requirements for safety and stability in road traffic.

Consequences for Harley-Davidson drivers

For drivers of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, this means that changes to the tires could become more complicated from 2025. If you want to convert to wider or optically different tires, you will have to expect additional effort and costs in the future. Testing at TÜV or DEKRA is not only time-consuming, but can also involve fees that vary depending on the testing center and the extent of the adjustments.

This limits the previous flexibility for personalized conversions to Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This new regulation represents a challenge, especially for bikers who like to customize their machines according to their own ideas. It is therefore recommended to make appointments with the testing center early in order to avoid possible waiting times or bottlenecks - especially at the beginning of the motorcycle season, when test appointments are in demand.

Why this regulation was changed

The reason for the new regulation is road safety. The UBB has long been a tool that was specifically tailored to the needs of motorcyclists who do not always want or cannot rely on standard tires. But this practice has not always been considered sufficiently safe by authorities. Official acceptance by a testing organization now ensures that all tires actually meet the required safety standards and possible risks are minimized.

From the perspective of the authorities and testing organizations, tire adjustments are a safety-relevant point that should be monitored more closely, especially on heavy machines such as Harley-Davidson models. Correct tires have a significant influence on the handling, braking effect and road grip of a motorcycle.

What should Harley riders do?

Anyone who wants to change tires on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle from 2025 that do not correspond to the original entries should follow the following steps:
1. Get advice: Before buying new tires, it is advisable to find out about the technical requirements and approval options .
2. Contact the testing center: If you decide to make a change, you should make an appointment with TÜV or DEKRA early on so that you can schedule the inspection.
3. Carry proof with you: After acceptance, the entry in the vehicle documents should be updated so as not to run into problems during traffic checks.

The official acceptance ensures that the new tires meet the requirements for German road traffic and can be driven legally.

Conclusion: Adaptation with planning

From 2025, driving with non-standard tires will generally require more effort for Harley-Davidson drivers and motorcycle owners. However, the additional trip to the TÜV or a testing organization can not only increase safety, but also minimize possible legal problems in the event of an accident. The new regulation therefore requires more careful planning and attention when choosing tires, but it also ensures greater control and safety on the roads.

MICHELIN Road 6/Road 6 GT motorcycle tires: Premiere of the new road tires from Michelin

  • More wet grip* and higher mileage** compared to the MICHELIN Road 5 tire series
  • Improved tire performance through a new tread design, advanced raw materials and an optimized tire architecture

The MICHELIN Road 6 tire series is the latest addition to Michelin's top-of-the-line sport touring tires. The tires offer drivers of roadsters, large duros, sports motorcycles and touring machines optimal performance in terms of wet grip, mileage, comfort and handling.

Michelin Road 6 GT motorcycle tires
Michelin Road 6 GT motorcycle tires

In addition to the MICHELIN Road 6, which is now also available for large duros, the new series also includes the MICHELIN Road 6 GT, which was specially developed for large and heavy touring machines. * and up to 10 percent higher mileage ** compared to its predecessor, the MICHELIN Road 5 . This is made possible by a new tread design, advanced raw materials and an optimized tire architecture.

Profile design:

  • An optimized negative tread ratio of 14 percent (the ratio of tread grooves to rubber) provides a high level of grip in wet and dry road conditions. This ratio does not change even when cornering in order to give the driver consistent feedback.
  • MICHELIN Water EverGrip sipe technology ensures a high level of wet grip and rider confidence (in these conditions). With this design, the slats widen as the profile wears over time.
  • New profile groove and sipe angles with longer edges cut through the water film and ensure interlocking with the road surface.

Raw materials:

  • The 100 percent silica-reinforced rubber compound with MICHELIN Silica Technology improves grip in cooler conditions and on damp and wet roads without compromising tire life.
  • The MICHELIN 2CT+ technology (2 Compound Technology) front and rear optimizes the different parts of the tread for different performance characteristics. The harder bottom layer of tread rubber provides greater cornering stability, while the softer top layer (in contact with the road) provides very good grip in dry and wet conditions and high mileage.

Tire architecture:

  • MICHELIN Radial The sidewalls of the new generation of Radial This means the tire remains stable at high speeds and is therefore also suitable for very powerful motorcycles. Overall, this technology optimizes the handling and responsiveness of the tire - for more driving pleasure and fun, without compromising safety.
  • MICHELIN Aramid Shield technology is a high-density, stiffer tire casing that contributes to excellent feedback and handling. Aramid belt layers counteract centrifugal forces at high speeds, reducing weight and providing excellent stability.

Another first from Michelin

Most motorcyclists attach great importance to the appearance of their motorcycles. Therefore, the MICHELIN Premium Touch Design is used for the first time in the design of the side walls of the MICHELIN Road 6. This exclusive technology uses the micro-geometry of the sidewalls to create texture. This modulates the contrast of the gray tones that highlight the tire markings - for an attractive finish.

The new MICHELIN Road 6 tire series has been available in stores since January 3, 2022. It includes six front and eight rear wheel sizes, while the MICHELIN Road 6 GT tire range is available in one front and three rear wheel sizes. This offer fits almost all motorcycles - from small roadsters like the KTM 390 to sports and sports touring bikes and large duros to touring machines like the BMW K1600 GT/GTL.

Continental: Fast motorcycles are allowed to run with M+S tires again

• Lower maximum tire speed permitted

• V-max of the M+S tire must not be exceeded

• Sticker or display in field of vision

Hanover/Korbach, August 2, 2021. Relief for fans of coarse studded tires: The ban on the use of motorcycle tires that are below the permissible V-max of the motorcycle is off the table. At the beginning of July, the federal government revised the corresponding paragraph 36 in the road traffic registration regulations for two- and three-wheeled vehicles and quads with the publication of the 55th regulation to amend road regulations in the Federal Law Gazette.

Thunderbike Harley Davidson

As a result, these vehicles can now use M+S tires again, regardless of their speed index, if the tires are certified according to the European standard UN/ECE/R75. This means that the 2017 regulation is finally history, according to which, with a transition period until 2024, only tires that at least achieve the registered V-max of the vehicle should be permitted. In the long term, that would have meant the end of coarse enduro tires on high-performance motorcycles.

The prerequisite for using the generally “slower” off-roaders is that the requirements for tire size and load capacity must be met for vehicles with EC type approval. For motorcycles with ABE, the design of the tire and possible manufacturer specifications are also crucial. If there are any deviations, the new tires must be entered in the vehicle documents.

Further information about M+S motorcycle tires from Continental and the entire current delivery program can be found at conti-moto.de.

Dunlop GT503 ex works on new Harley-Davidson Sportster S

• Newly developed Harley-Davidson tire with a particularly sporty design
• Development focus: dry and wet performance
• Sizes: 160/70R17 (front) and 180/70R16 (rear)

Without a doubt, the brand new Harley-Davidson Sportster S is one of the most anticipated motorcycle innovations of 2021. It is even one of the most powerful bikes within the Harley-Davidson product range. Dunlop was exclusively commissioned by Harley-Davidson to develop a new tire specifically tailored to the requirements of the Sportster S. The result of the collaboration is the newly designed Dunlop GT503, which offers Sportster S pilots excellent driving characteristics. The profile design is particularly sporty and matches the dynamic appearance of the Sportster S.

Not only does the GT503 tire profile convey progressiveness, the new Harley tire also offers innovative technologies under the tread. The radial construction features the proven JointLessBelt technology (endlessly wound zero-degree belt), which is also used in Dunlop's hypersport and sport touring tires. The advantages are neutral handling across the entire lean angle, more stability at higher speeds and excellent feedback.

In addition, the tire contour was shaped in such a way that the contact area with the asphalt is increased and remains consistently large in order to offer a high level of grip - regardless of the lean angle. In combination with the new rubber compound, Sportster S drivers can rely on safe and sporty driving characteristics on dry and wet roads.

Harley-Davidson Hamburg North

Like many other exclusive Harley-Davidson tires from Dunlop, the GT503 also bears the Harley-Davidson logo on the sidewall. Commenting on the strong partnership between the two brands, Luca Davide Andreoni, Dunlop Marketing Manager Europe, said: “We are proud that Harley-Davidson has chosen Dunlop as the original equipment tire brand for the Sportster S. It was exactly 40 years ago when Harley-Davidson and Dunlop started working together on the original Sportster models. Since then, Dunlop has supplied over 10 million original equipment tires to Harley-Davidson. With the GT503, Dunlop continues this strong collaboration in developing innovative tires to meet the demanding requirements of the manufacturer and its customers.”

The GT503 is mounted on the new Sportster S in sizes 160/70R17 (front) and 180/70R16 (rear). The wide front tire size provides a cool custom bike look, but also offers the light handling expected of sports bikes.

The air carries the motorcycle, not the tire

The air carries the motorcycle, not the tire

Continental motorcycle tires: supporting role for hot air

• The air carries the motorcycle, not the tire

• Pressure loss of up to 0.1 bar per month is normal

• Check motorcycle tire air pressure

• Pressure loss of up to 0.1 bar per month is normal

• Regular checks are important

Hanover/Korbach, April 19, 2021. Air plays an extremely important role when riding a motorcycle. In the form of headwind, it ensures a constant fresh breeze and also plays a key role in chassis technology: when pressed into the tube or tire, air is the force that determines the distance between the motorcycle and the asphalt. It is clear that their quantity – their pressure – plays a crucial role in driving characteristics. And it is also clear that deviations upwards or downwards can have a negative impact on normal operation.

If the air pressure increases, comfort decreases. Despite this formula, motorcyclists should always follow the manufacturer's maximum air pressure values and, if necessary, add a tiny bit more - after all, ride comfort can usually also be adjusted using the telescopic fork and shock absorber. More air pressure can also have a positive effect on consumption. Reliance on the correct “bar” value is rewarded with more safety in the extremely sensitive area between the asphalt and the rim and applies to all types of motorcycles. Exceptions to the recommended air pressure only make sense and should be applied carefully in a few cases.

Example off-road: The air pressure is usually lowered to achieve more interlocking in the ground. To prevent a tubular tire from twisting and thereby tearing off the valve, tire holders must be installed in the rim when the air pressure is reduced. Before asphalt is placed under the studs again, the air pressure must be increased to the specified value in order to avoid damage caused by overheating.

Individual air pressure values are also used on the racetrack. Uniform recommendations are hardly possible, especially for racing tires, as the ideal air pressure depends extremely on external conditions such as the temperature of the environment and road, type of motorcycle, chassis setup, driving style or condition of the asphalt.

Everyone has to find out the ideal “cushion” for themselves. Good advice can be found in Continental’s racing tire flyer, which is available to download free of charge in the “Interesting Facts” section at www.conti-moto.de. If road tires are used on the racetrack, the inflation pressures can be slightly lowered to increase grip. Then be sure to reset the pressure to the specified value.

A pressure loss of up to 0.1 bar per month is normal. So if you want to be on the safe side after a long period of downtime, it's best to get a floor pump with a pressure gauge, which is available in solid quality from around 30 euros in bike shops.

Mdag Messebau - We rock it!

In a nutshell: The Continental air basics

• The compressed air carries the load, not the sidewall or carcass of the tire

• The correct air pressure determines the size of the tire contact patch

• The contact area between the tire and the road is only the size of a credit card

• Reduced air pressure causes increased sidewall and tread flexing
and can lead to tire damage

• Increased inflation pressure makes tires susceptible to possible impact damage

• Only check/change the air pressure for “normal operation” when the tires are cold

• Depending on the use of the motorcycle, the prescribed air pressure can vary; the weight (solo/pillion/pillion/luggage) plays a particularly important role

• Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

For an extra portion of driving fun at the start of the motorcycle season: brand new tire models at MotorradreifenDirekt.de

  • Numerous new models from well-known manufacturers: summer can come.
  • For the new season, customers will benefit from an even larger selection for all segments.
  • New live chat function for individual advice in the MotorradreifenDirekt.de online shop.

Delticom AG/MotorradreifenDirekt.de, Hanover – March 5th, 2021. In keeping with the start of the new motorcycle season, MotorradreifenDirekt.de, the online shop for motorcycle tires and accessories from Europe's largest online tire retailer Delticom, has once again expanded its range to include numerous products. New tire models in many different dimensions are now available in the shop - from touring and enduro to super sport.

New additions to the range include the Battlax Sport Touring T32 and the Battlax Sport Touring T32 GT from Bridgestone . The premium tires for the Radial touring segment impress thanks to innovative mixing technology, excellent handling and improved safety thanks to a new profile with Pulse Groove technology, for more safety, especially on wet roads.

Brand new on the market this year for the Supersport Road segment is the Sport Force+ from Mitas in the EV and RS variants . The improved contour of the EV tire optimizes the contact surface with the road, which is intended to ensure more grip, even in maximum lean angles, especially when accelerating out of curves and during hard braking maneuvers. The RS variant, on the other hand, does without the EV's excellent wet grip and is therefore only suitable for the race track or in dry conditions. Also new is the Diablo Rosso IV from Pirelli , the super sports tire relies on optimal suitability for everyday use, comfort and technical details that have been adopted from racing. The carcass with rayon fibers - an artificial silk - is more stable than ordinary textile fibers. Due to increased dimensional stability when braking or accelerating hard, fewer fibers have to be used, which leaves more space for rubber on the carcass and therefore more room for driving comfort.

All models are new on the market and available in the MotorradreifenDirekt.de online shop.

also focusing on pure driving fun with two new models, the Scorcher Adventure from the chopper/cruiser segment and the Road Classic – a touring sport diagonal.

Metzeler is also bringing a new tire onto the market this year – the Tourance Next 2 . With its impressive mileage, the new enduro tire is a good companion for adventure bikes whose riders demand top handling and the highest level of stability and comfort even in wet conditions.

With the new tire models, bikers are well prepared for the upcoming season, which we are all really excited about,” says Andreas Faulstich from MotorradreifenDirekt.de .

It's worth a look - 2020 was also a year for top tires
When choosing new tires, bikers should also take a look at products from 2020. Because: Last year too, manufacturers brought remarkable highlights onto the market. The Bridgestone Battlax BT 46, the ContiSportAttack 4, the ContiRoad, the Dunlop Mutant, the Metzeler Sportec M9 RR, the Michelin Power 5 and the Michelin Commander III Cruiser and Touring were just a few.

Finding tires made easy: Thanks to the new live chat function on MotorradreifenDirekt.de

Bikers from all over Europe choose their personal “motorcycle tires” together with MotorradreifenDirekt.de
The most popular motorcycle tires among European bikers

Clear country-specific preferences: Bikers from all over Europe choose their personal “Motorcycle Tire of the Year” together with MotorradreifenDirekt.de

  • Results of the large MotorradreifenDirekt.de survey on “Motorcycle Tire of the Year” are available.
  • More than 3,000 bikers from ten countries voted on their favorite tire models in eight categories.
  • Brands from your own home country enjoy the most trust.

Delticom AG/MotorradreifenDirekt.de, Hanover – October 18, 2019.

Bikers know what they want. They often have precise requirements for their equipment and correspondingly clear beliefs when it comes to brands and models. Which ones they are apparently also depends on which compatriots they are.

At least that’s what the results of the Europe-wide survey by MotorradreifenDirekt.de on “Motorcycle Tire of the Year” suggest.

On the one hand, these reveal a fairly heterogeneous field of winners, but on the other hand, they show clear country-specific preferences: The country of origin of the tire brand obviously has a clear relevance for its popularity - motorcyclists from Germany, for example, prefer Continental, French bikers are loyal to Michelin and Italian two-wheeler fans rely on Pirelli .

In total, around 3,150 people took part in the survey. From July to September, MotorradreifenDirekt.de called on bikers in a total of ten European countries (Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain) to name their favorite in nine categories from a selection of current models .

The winners in Germany are:

  • Touring category: ContiRoadAttack 3
Although the Michelin Road 5 is the clear overall winner in six countries, including France, with 42 percent of all votes, there is also a clear majority in this category in Germany with 36 percent of the votes for the ContiRoadAttack 3 as the motorcycle tire year. The Michelin comes in third place here after the newly introduced Pirelli Angel GT II.
  • Chopper/Cruiser Category: Metzeler Cruisetec
In the country comparison, first place in this category was shared by the Metzeler Cruisetec and the Michelin Commander II, which were favored in three countries each. From Metzeler's point of view, this is an impressive success, as the brand new Cruisetec has obviously positioned itself on the market within a very short time and can already keep up with the established Commander II.
  • Enduro/road category: ContiTrailAttack 3
In the enduro/road sector there is a cross-border preference for new products. In Great Britain, for example, the new Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross AX41 was voted motorcycle tire of the year, as was the new Michelin Anakee Adventure in five countries, which also won the overall victory with 38 percent of all votes. In contrast, the Conti model is the winner in Germany and Austria with over 20 percent each, while in Italy and the Netherlands the motorcycle tire of the year is called the Pirelli Scorpion Pro.

Many bikers trust the manufacturer from their country

It is noticeable that bikers seem to trust the brands that originally come from their country the most.

This is most evident in France: Here only Michelin models were chosen as winners. The preferences are also clear in Germany with Conti and Metzeler, as well as in Italy with Pirelli.

It’s also worth noting that British bikers seem to have a preference for Bridgestone,” explains Andreas Faulstich from MotorradreifenDirekt.de.

“Overall, however, there is a relatively mixed picture. That’s why we consciously focus on having as extensive a range as possible so that bikers from all over Europe can find the tires they want from us.”

MotorradreifenDirekt.de among all participants in the survey , including a SENA Smart Helmet Momentum, a GoPro camera and shop vouchers worth 200 euros.

All results of the Motorcycle Tire of the Year survey can be found here: www.motorradreifendirekt.de/motorradreifen-des-jahr-2019-auswerte

The text has been shortened to include some results from the athletes and enduro classes.
