The Harley-Davidson event in Sturgis kicks off with the 78th meeting.
It all started in South Dakota on August 3, when the Harley Sound in on the mainstream the city from its deep slumber. One year there was nothing going on here and then suddenly it starts and over half a million Harley bikers descend on the city.
Sturgis resident Neil Hultman, was the first official road captain of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. In 1947, he and Pappy Hoel worked hand-in-hand to organize motorcycle tours through the Black Hills to promote the Sturgis Hill Climb and the Half-Mile race events.
Over the years, these events to what is now known as Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally is known.
The first night Sturgis was hit by a heavy thunderstorm, strong winds caused some delays in the live performances. However, no damage was reported.
Unfortunately there were some car accidents with animals near Sturgis, they collided with cars while crossing the road, the SD Highway Patrol reported. Especially with the wild buffalo you have to be careful, some car drivers have gotten too close to them.
It's probably the toughest Harley event in the world, so when you open your tent on the campground in the early morning and are greeted by a sandstorm, you can get an idea of what's going on here.
Great bands take the stage every year, this year we can sing along to Sweet Home Alabama live, or celebrate Kid Rock on stage.
The trips into the countryside are magnificent, and a visit to Mount Rushmore should also be on the road map in South Dakota.
