Harley-Davidson introduces the new, strictly limited Fat Boy Gray Ghost
The fifth model in the Icons Motorcycle Collection celebrates 35 years of fat custom style.

FRANKFURT (May 8, 2025) – The silvery Fat Boy Gray Ghost is the fifth model in the Harley-Davidson Icons Motorcycle Collection. This new, strictly limited edition Icons model celebrates the first 35 years of the Fat Boy – a bike that made history and whose name is one of the most famous in the motorcycle world. With its new, shiny Reflection Finish, which makes the entire machine look as if it has been dipped in chrome, the Fat Boy Gray Ghost pays homage to a legend in motorcycle design.

As part of the Icons Motorcycle Collection, the Motor Company presents a strictly limited edition of a motorcycle model each year, which represents a reinterpretation of a classic H-D style icon. The models in the Icons Motorcycle Collection are numbered and feature special features that set them apart from the respective series version. Production of the Fat Boy Gray Ghost is limited to 1,990 units worldwide, with a recommended retail price of €30,700 in Germany, €36,500 in Austria, and CHF 30,700 in Switzerland. 

With the Fat Boy Gray Ghost, Harley-Davidson celebrates the origins of the fat custom segment. 

„In 1990, the original Fat Boy took the look, proportions, and silhouette of a 1949 Hydra-Glide and combined it with the technology of the time to appeal to a new generation of riders,“ explains Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Design and Creative Director Motorcycles. „These riders appreciated our early post-war design DNA, but were also attracted to clean and uncluttered contemporary industrial design.“

When it was introduced, the model was designed for a limited lifespan. Contrary to expectations, however, the Fat Boy has survived three engine generations and a complete overhaul of its Softail chassis, retaining its original presence and inimitable style for 35 years.
 
Unique reflection finish

The Fat Boy is a motorcycle for riders who want to make a statement. This statement is made even clearer by the Fat Boy Gray Ghost from the Icons Collection. It shimmers in the sun as if it had been milled from a solid block of aluminum and polished to a high shine. The reflection finish is created using a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) process, also known as thin-film coating. This involves vaporizing a solid material in a vacuum and applying it to the surface of a component—in the case of this machine, the fuel tank and the front and rear fenders. To do this, a positive charge is applied to the solid material (an aluminum alloy) and a negative charge to the motorcycle part. After the deposition process, the component is coated with clear lacquer. 

In the past, Harley-Davidson has used the PVD process to refine some small parts such as tank medallions and exhaust covers. The fenders and fuel tank of the Fat Boy Gray Ghost are the first large parts of a Harley to be treated in this way. The precision of the coating results in a unique finish that looks similar to chrome but has advantages over conventional chrome plating. Above all, it meets H-D standards for corrosion resistance, which would not be achievable with a conventional chrome coating on these parts.

The frame is powder-coated in a light silver tone, and chrome side covers complete the shiny look. Styling elements inspired by the original Fat Boy include a round air filter, yellow emblems on the lower rocker boxes, engine covers, and tank console insert, a seat with lacing and leather tassels, and a black leather tank strap that also features lacing. The three-dimensional tank medallions are also modeled after the winged tank graphics on the original Fat Boy. The serial number is engraved on the tank console, and there is a medallion on the rear fender indicating that it belongs to the Icons Collection.

The Lakester alloy wheels typical of the Fat Boy emphasize its confident appearance. They are fitted with Michelin Scorcher 11 tires in 160/60 R18 (front) and 240/40 R18 (rear). 

High performance and modern technology
The Fat Boy Gray Ghost has more power and all the technical features introduced in the 2025 model year for the Fat Boy and the entire series.

– New for 2025 on the Fat Boy: The new Milwaukee-Eight 117 Custom V2 is tuned to deliver 75 kW (102 hp) and a maximum torque of 165 Nm at 2,750 rpm – a power increase of over seven percent and around 6.5 percent more torque than the 2024 Fat Boy 114.
o The engine was equipped with a 2-into-2 exhaust system with two catalytic converters. To produce a powerful sound, the lightweight mufflers dampen high frequencies and emphasize low frequencies.

o The combustion chamber shape of the four-valve cylinder heads has been redesigned, with oval intake ports and flow-optimized intake valve seats improving power delivery and reducing fuel consumption.
o The engine oil is fed through cooling channels in the cylinder heads via an oil cooler mounted on the frame. This cooling system also optimizes thermal comfort for the rider, especially at low speeds and in hot weather. 

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): To optimize comfort and handling, the front and rear suspension feature newly tuned components.
o The 49 mm dual-bending valve fork keeps the front wheel in contact with the road surface at all times and ensures greater comfort.
o To adapt the chassis to different load and road conditions, the spring preload of the central leg under the seat can be adjusted hydraulically.

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): Three riding modes (Road, Rain, and Sport) electronically control the motorcycle's performance characteristics and the level of assistance provided by the electronic assistance systems. 

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): The 2025 models feature an anti-lock braking system, traction control, and drag torque control, which maintain their function when leaning. 
o Cornering-optimized anti-lock braking system (ABS/C-ABS)
o Curve-optimized traction control system (TCS/C-TCS)
o Curve-optimized drag torque control (DSCS/C-DSCS)
o Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): All lighting components on the Cruiser are LED-based. They are more durable and effective than other light sources.

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): The new USB-C port offers faster data transfer than the previously used USB-A port, as well as reversible plug orientation and compatibility with newer devices. The port is located on the front left side of the motorcycle under the fuel tank.

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): The connections for heated H-D clothing have been moved from the vehicle side to the top of the rear fender under the seat, where they are more easily accessible.

– New for 2025 on Cruiser models (Softail): The new 5“ instrument on the tank console features an analog speedometer with a digital multifunction LCD display. At the touch of a button on the handlebars, the rider can scroll through the available information on the display.

The story of an icon

In 1990, at a time when motorcycle media and most motorcyclists were enthusiastic about increasingly powerful sports bikes, the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy hit the market like a thunderous heavy metal chord.

The Fat Boy was inspired by a custom bike based on the H-D Softail platform, which was created in 1987 at Harley-Davidson Montréal. Managing Director Duc Dufour and workshop employee Denis Lavoie developed this machine and named it Lowboy. It featured concealed rear suspension, a light alloy disc wheel, a fiberglass front fender, and wide handlebars. Harley-Davidson manager Jerry Wilke discovered it and sent a copy to Milwaukee. The machine inspired the H-D styling team, led by Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz, to develop their Fat Boy. 

„The wheels are the defining feature of the 1990 Fat Boy,“ explains Davidson in his book „100 Years of Harley-Davidson.” „We wanted to create a distinctive look with the disc wheels. We took our idea further with a single-color silver paint job and a silver powder-coated frame. Since the entire motorcycle was now silver, we needed something even brighter to add accents. So I added yellow trim to the rocker covers, the clutch and ignition covers, and the ignition switch. We built a Fat Boy prototype and took it to Daytona to get personal feedback from the riders.”

No other manufacturer would have had the audacity to name a motorcycle Fat Boy.

„You're probably wondering how we came up with the name Fat Boy. I've heard many stories about it, almost all of which are untrue,“ Davidson reports. „Here's the real story: it's not easy to find a name that is both memorable and enduringly popular. We were looking for something unusual and maybe even irreverent, and there's something cool about poking fun at your own products from time to time. To me and many other insiders who had seen the motorcycle, it just looked really fat. That's how the marketing people came up with the name Fat Boy.”
