Vehicle registration will be fundamentally simpler from September 2023
Online vehicle registration in combination with the ID card and activated online function saves you having to go to the authorities. We are not really used to things becoming really easy when dealing with the authorities. On 15.02.2023, the cabinet already approved and adopted the ordinance presented by Federal Minister Dr. Volker Wissing on the new Vehicle Registration Ordinance. On March 31, 2023, the Federal Council also approved the whole thing and thus the new edition of the digital i-KFZ registration will be launched from September 1, 2023.
In many registration districts, it has already been possible to re-register online since October 2019, or to carry out transfers and deregistrations online; from September, it will be even easier and more comprehensive.
The magic word is i-KFZ and means: „Internet-based vehicle registration“. You will need an ID card with the online ID function activated, for which you have received a PIN code and the ID card app2 should be installed on the cell phone.
In combination with the ID card and the online function, the ID card app can generally be a good companion. Today, you can also use these functions to open a bank account and verify yourself via the AusweisApp2.
What will change from September 1, 2023
As soon as you have registered your vehicle online, it should be possible to drive on the road without vehicle documents and stickers. The digital registration certificate is valid for 10 days, after which the stickers must be affixed. This means that you can drive straight away if you have successfully completed the online process.
It is also possible to apply for special license plates, such as electric license plates, classic car license plates and seasonal license plates. From September, it will also be possible for legal entities under private law to make use of the online services. These include car dealerships and registration service providers and others who submit a large number of registration applications each year. The special highlight is that it will actually be cheaper.
