Traffic accident with one seriously injured and three slightly injured persons
On Friday, July 30, 2021, a 24-year-old man from Bleckede was driving his Audi car on Federal Highway 4/242 from Hohegeiß toward Braunlage. At around 6:20 p.m., he recklessly attempted to overtake two motorcyclists and two cars before a bend (a left-hand bend before the old landfill site). As he was overtaking on the opposite lane, a car from Nordhausen suddenly came out of the bend. He swerved back into his lane in front of one of the motorcycles, cutting off a 57-year-old man from Berlin riding a Harley Davidson.
This forces him to swerve and slam on the brakes. The Berlin man falls and suffers minor injuries. This accident causes two subsequent accidents in quick succession from the opposite direction. A 22-year-old woman from Bremen is riding her Yamaha motorcycle on Federal Highway 4, coming from Braunlage and heading towards Hohegeiß. Presumably due to excessive speed and insufficient distance to a motorcycle in front, which brakes heavily due to the accident site, the 22-year-old falls and skids to the left into the ditch.
Another subsequent accident is also believed to have been caused by inappropriate speed, as a 20-year-old man from Oldenburg was unable to stop his Suzuki motorcycle in time before reaching the accident site. He first collided with a motorcycle that was already stationary. The 20-year-old's motorcycle then skidded into the left-hand ditch, hitting a 22-year-old woman from Bremen and her motorcycle, which were already lying there following an accident.
According to estimates, the five motorcycles involved suffered a total of approximately €28,500 in property damage. The vehicles were recovered by various towing companies. Three motorcyclists were taken to nearby hospitals with minor injuries by ambulance. The 22-year-old woman from Bremen was taken to a university hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries. A total of four ambulances (LK Goslar, LK Harz, LK Nordhausen) and one emergency doctor's car, as well as Christoph 44, were deployed. The Braunlage fire department supported the first responders on site, cordoned off the accident area and cleaned up the scene. Federal Highway 4 was completely closed between 6:30 p.m. and approximately 8:30 p.m. while rescue and recovery work was carried out.
Many thanks to all first responders, firefighters, and rescue workers.
