September 2, 2020: Nimbostratus, Altocumulus and Cumulonimbus - these are not heroes from a comic book, but types of clouds. They can take on many different shapes and colors. Cirrus (feather clouds)
Cirrus clouds form at an altitude of five to 13 kilometers above the earth. They often look like large, thin, fibrous feathers floating in the sky. Cirrus clouds consist exclusively of ice crystals. They often herald a warm front with rain.
Cirrocumulus
These rare clouds look like thin fields or layers consisting of very small, grainy-looking cloud fragments. They are usually arranged quite regularly. They also form at an altitude of five to 13 kilometers, consist of ice and often herald powerful thunderstorms.
Cirrostratus (veil clouds)
Cirrostratus clouds usually herald rain. They form when a warm layer of air slides onto a colder one. The clouds in the sky are usually so thin that they still allow the sun to shine through. This often results in colorful rings around the sun, known as halos. Cirrostratus clouds form at an altitude of five to 13 kilometers.
Altocumulus (fleecy clouds)
These clouds occur at an altitude of two to seven kilometers and are white or grey. Sometimes they look like waves or flocks. They consist of (supercooled) water droplets and often herald a thundery day, especially in summer.
Altostratus
If you see these bluish to gray clouds in the sky, it usually won't be long before it rains. They often extend over a large area and can become so dense that you can no longer see the sun behind them. They occur at an altitude of two to seven kilometers.
Stratocumulus
These grey or white clouds consist of rain droplets or snow crystals and occur at altitudes of up to two kilometers. Stratocumulus is the most common type of cloud.
Stratus
Eine eintönige tiefhängende Schicht aus Wasserwolken ist typisch für diese Wolkenart. Sie kommt häufig im Herbst und winter vor und bringt mitunter auch Sprühregen. Stratuswolken kommen in Höhen bis zu zwei Kilometern vor. Sie sind oft nur dünn und darüber scheint die Sonne.
Nimbostratus
Wer diese grauen Wolken am Himmel sieht, sollte nicht ohne Schirm aus dem Haus gehen. Sie bringen fast immer Regen oder Snow und sind die klassischen „Schlechtwetterwolken“.
Cumulus
With clear edges and usually a bright, rich white - these are cumulus clouds. Especially in summer, they occasionally herald thunder and lightning. A single cumulus cloud about 100 meters wide and high weighs five to ten tons. This corresponds to around 5,000 to 10,000 liters of water.
CumulonimbusThis cloud is the queen of clouds. It can reach well over ten kilometers in height and therefore extends through all cloud levels. The most characteristic type is the „Cumulonimbus capillatus“, an anvil-shaped thundercloud. Heavy rain and sometimes also hail and squalls occur under this powerful cloud.
