Serial 1 e-bikes from Harley-Davidson – second generation 2022
THE KEY FEATURES AND TECHNOLOGIES OF THE SERIAL 1 E-BIKES
All Serial 1 e-bikes are developed at a dedicated facility on the Harley-Davidson® campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, using the same principles and processes used to develop electric motorcycles.
A central center of gravity is the key to safe handling and excellent driving dynamics, so from the beginning Serial 1's goal was to develop a bike with a very low center of gravity that offers agile and predictable handling in all riding situations.
The e-bikes from Serial 1 are simple and modern. All cables and wiring are hidden within the frame, lighting is integrated front and back, and the smooth, clean lines provide exactly the great style that customers have come to expect from Serial 1.
Finally, by incorporating low-maintenance and easy-to-use technologies such as the Gates Carbon Drive belt drive, an automatically shifting CVT transmission (on select models) and self-adjusting hydraulic brakes, we have developed extremely fun and easy-to-use e-bikes that allow the enable the driver to enjoy every journey to the fullest, undisturbed.
Aluminum frame: The frame and forks are constructed from welded, hydroformed aluminum to be light and rigid, while the geometry is designed to :
- Manoeuvrable, agile driving behavior in all driving situations
- Confident control and comfort on both urban cycle paths and rural back roads.
Integrated Battery: The lithium-ion battery is integrated into the lower frame and can be easily removed for charging outside the bike. It can also be charged when in the bike via a charging port located on the lower frame.
Mid-engine: The Brose mid-engine generates a torque of 90Nm/66 ft. lb. and thus offers enough support to enable a quick start from a standing start and to support the rider in conquering even the most difficult hills. An electronic torque sensor automatically registers the pressure the driver applies to the pedals and immediately provides the appropriate electrical support. There is no throttle or clutch - just pedal and go.
Four driving modes:
- Eco mode for gentle support in flat and comfortable conditions.
- Tour mode for the optimal mix of support and battery economy in different driving conditions.
- Sport mode for pronounced support in curves or on inclines.
Boost mode for tackling steep climbs, strong headwinds or other conditions that require continuous support.
Walking Aid: A “walking aid” function is accessible at the touch of a button on the handlebar controls and provides a slight forward movement to easily maneuver the e-bike on foot, especially if it needs to be pushed up a hill .
Belt Drive: The Gates Carbon Drive belt is smooth, quiet and maintenance free. It does not require regular lubrication or adjustment like a chain drive system. It never gets greasy or dirty.
Automatically shifting transmission (RUSH/CTY models only): The intelligent Enviolo automatic transmission AUTOMATiQ is an electronically controlled CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission) rear hub that automatically and continuously adjusts the gear ratio to achieve the optimal, individual cadence of the rider/s. in, even if the terrain or driving speed changes. It is fully sealed and maintenance free and is included on all RUSH/CTY models .
Controls on the handlebars: The ergonomically arranged thumb and index finger controls on each model allow the rider to turn the e-bike on and off, change the riding mode, turn the integrated headlight on and off and activate the walking aid , without having to take one hand off the handlebars.
Hydraulic disc brakes: E-bike specific front and rear hydraulic disc brakes with 203mm brake discs designed to provide reliable braking performance in most riding situations - essential for fast e-bikes and all-weather commuting.
Internally Routed Lines: Brake lines and electrical cables are routed through the frame, resulting in longer life and less maintenance as they are protected from the elements and provide clean, no-frills handling.
Integrated lighting: A bright LED headlight attached to the stem illuminates the path and makes the driver appear more conspicuous in the dark. Bright LED taillights and brake lights integrated into the frame dropouts are intended to make the bike more visible from behind. The striking LED front light pays homage to the shape of the classic head tube of the original Harley-Davidson bicycles from the early 1920s and lights up whenever the e-bike is switched on.
Intelligent size distribution : The frame geometry is optimized for each frame size to ensure a comfortable riding position and consistent handling across all sizes, regardless of the rider's height. The preferred posture for riding city bikes is upright to increase the rider's comfort and awareness of the surroundings. Both frame geometry and contact points have been analyzed to ensure our size range is best suited to almost every customer.

A few people may still be exactly between two sizes.
The question of which size is right for each customer depends on what he/she plans to do with the bike. A larger size will feel bulkier and ride more stable at high speeds, while a smaller size will feel more compact and offer sportier handling.
How does the automatic CVT manual transmission work?
The Enviolo AUTOMATiQ continuously variable transmission is based on the NuVinci CVT transmission system, in which a set of rotating and tilting balls are positioned between the input and output disks of a transmission.
Tilting the balls changes their contact diameter and thus the effective transmission ratio. As a result, the NuVinci CVT system provides a seamless and continuous transition to any gear ratio within this range. This video shows you how it works.
What do the different driving modes do?
The intensity of the electrical support provided by the motor can be adjusted using the four available driving modes. This allows the driver to select the most suitable driving mode for him/her depending on his/her needs and driving conditions:
Eco mode is best for flat and leisurely routes when you only want a small amount of assistance without unnecessarily draining the battery.
Tour mode is best when you want constant, yet manageable electric assistance to provide the optimal mix of assistance and battery economy in changing riding conditions.
Sport mode is best when you want noticeable assistance on corners and inclines to go further or faster than you would under your own power.
Boost mode is best suited for steep climbs, strong headwinds or other situations where you need sustained and effective support.
Do I need a special charger if I want to own a Serial 1 e-bike?
