A really nice place to stay in the Lofoten Islands. I would stay here again at any time.

Bucket List - Discover the Lofoten on the Road Glide ST

Part 4

The daily plan in the fourth part!

Today I spent the second night on the Lofoten, yesterday's trip to Haukland Beach and the Viking Museum was a great start. I am now drawn about 220 kilometers further into the northern area of the Lofoten. Yesterday evening I found a small hotel in Sandtorg. At first I didn't understand the hotel offer, but the most important things were right. These would be: A good breakfast, your own bathroom with toilet and, if possible, close to the sea. In terms of price, I would prefer to live in a nicer place, after all I'm in the Lofoten Islands and not just passing through.

I found a hotel from the Best Western Signature Collection

While the hotel didn't look particularly modern in the pictures, it's part of the Best Western Signature Collection , meaning this hotel isn't subject to brand restrictions and is typically privately run. Anyway, I booked there and now I'm looking for a really nice route, I'm not on the island because of the hotels. I have very nice weather again and the plan is to find a route where I can ride Harley

I started this tour very spontaneously because the time window had just opened up, so there was no preparation, but that's not a particularly bad thing for me. However, I do know Harley bikers who plan their tours down to the last detail, which can be really fun and is sometimes part of it. For me it's more of an adventure in a spontaneous way, but I'm traveling alone, so it's usually not a problem to find somewhere to stay or to drive until you find something.

I have probably discovered one of the most beautiful stretches by the sea

The Road Glide has BoomBox GTS navigation, basically it's easy to find a nice route, you just have to enter the destination and Most scenic, fastest,  shortest or most winding route , depending on which BoomBox you have, you should use these terms in the route options area.

Here is the user manual for the BoomBox GTS from 2019:

As already mentioned, it's about 220 kilometers, which according to the navigation should take me three and a half hours. That's fine, so I can travel comfortably to the north of Lofoten for the day.

to check out of my accommodation at the port of Ballstad , this time it's my lovely wife. Her husband is a fisherman and he goes out to sea in the fishing boat early in the morning to fish. Not like before, more for a hobby or to go on a fishing trip with visitors. If I had known this beforehand, I might have just gone along for the ride. In Lofoten you can see many sea eagles that hunt fish spectacularly and if you are really lucky you can even see whales.

There is the bird island of Røst at the bottom of the Lofoten Islands, where puffins make their home in the rocks. You can only get to the island by boat. If you enjoy taking photos and have a good telephoto lens, this tip could be worthwhile. The Lofoten Islands have a lot to offer, you should have a little more time than I did.

Off we go, in Leknes we turn right towards the sea. It's the 815 that I'm on now. You should stay on this road, otherwise you can still take the lower half on the 817. I drive the 815 and after a few bends the picture of vast nature opens up in front of me and I see the open sea.

I pause to take in the breathtaking sight. The sky is streaked with brilliant blue as the sun's rays reflect on the calm sea. The salty sea breeze blows gently around my nose and makes my heart beat faster with excitement.

The road winds further along the coast as I feel the feeling of freedom and adventure rising within me. The sound of the waves is accompanied by the sound of the Road Glide ST, where you can particularly hear the snorkeling of the Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather air filter.

As I drive slowly, I can literally feel the endless expanse of the ocean stretching out in front of me. I made a short film of it, I think you can understand my emotions.

Right along the ocean on 815

I stop again and again to enjoy the view and take photos of these unforgettable moments. I feel alive and free as I explore the coast of Norway on my Harley, so in my mind I have reached the destination of my journey.

After about 40 kilometers I see the Sundklakkbrua bridge in front of me, now I am back on the main road E10, which starts in the south of Lofoten in Å i Lofoten, at the ferry port and ends in the town of Bjerkvik north of the Lofoten and turns into the E6 . The E6 has its highest point just before the North Cape in Olderfjord, so you could drive straight through.

But I really don't plan to do that, I was already there in 2017 and now a great hotel in Sandtorg is waiting for me.

Now that I'm back inside the island, traffic suddenly starts to build up in front of me. Traffic jams are very unusual in Norway ; you actually only have them if there is an accident or a construction site in front of you.

In my case, an excited reindeer came running towards me on the road, its tongue was already hanging out, the animal was visibly excited, but will probably leave the road again at some point. Norwegians are very relaxed in this case and simply stop in order not to endanger the animal.

In Norway, in the event of accidents involving wildlife or personal injury, the police must be called on 112 or 113. There is generally the European emergency number 112, which should always work in an emergency.

“Hairy Game Clause” Insurance – Do reindeer and moose fall under hairy game?

As is often the case, insurance is again an issue when traveling abroad, just as there is an Eastern Europe clause that we had to deal with when we went to Budapest for the 120th anniversary. There is a “wildlife clause” in partial comprehensive insurance that regulates exactly what is paid and what is not. That depends on your contract and insurer. While deer, stags, hares, wild boars, marmots, foxes, badgers, lynxes, chamois and otters are usually included, hedgehogs and reptiles are not included.

And just as pets or farm animals such as dogs, cats, cows or horses are not classified as furred game. Reindeer, also called “ren” in crossword puzzles, are the farm animals of the Lapps.

In the next part I'll drive across the Arctic Circle to Sweden

In the end I found another great spot in Sandtorg on the Lofoten Islands where I could really relax right by the sea. That's a special thing about Norway, this extraordinary silence, the higher you go in Norway, the quieter it becomes around you.

In the next part I head back home, I drive over the Arctic Circle in Sweden and the nice weather is completely over. But we already know this about the far north, that it can get really wet at times. I had mega sunny days in the Lofoten Islands, so that was much more important now.
